DIY Air Liquefier Build- Liquid Nitrogen Generator

  • I built a cryocooler based air liquefier It reaches temperatures low enough to make liquid nitrogen, oxygen, argon and possibly many more. I am able to pump down the chamber, than fill it up with an atmosphere of any gas at whatever pressure in between by using the valves and flow meters. The problem with it is the output is a bit slow and it uses a ton of electricity.
    Here's what I paid for it:
    cryopump, compressor, hoses $100 (rare)
    vacuum pump $49
    everything else $120 (not including the water chiller, I already had that)
    It was a fun build and I can really use the Ln2 for upcoming projects. If I liquefy a really cold gas (below 30K) I'll make another video, but I doubt this setup can.
    Liquid nitrogen is quite dangerous, it will give you frost bite or worse. You can touch it for a second but any longer and it will start burning. Liquid oxygen will do that but can also make even a spark turn into a massive explosion. Use common sense

    My friend has designed a 3 stage cascade refrigeration system that liquefies methane and nitrogen.
    Propane in first stage, (-42°C)
    Ethylene in second stage(-103°C)
    Methane in third stage(-162°C)
    He condenses nitrogen under pressure of about 10bar

      I don't think you're going to liquefy nitrogen with an ethylene second state......

      I guess its more of an overview. I'm most likely going to do a Hampson-Linde setup to make liquid helium, 4k cryocoolers are very hard to find cheap. Thanks!

    I used to work for a large genomics proteomics company. when i think of all of the perfectly good gear i tossed in dumpsters because of sarbanes oxley regulations I want to heave.
    Now that I have a home lab im glad that I took so many things home with me. but i trashed a perfectly good chiller when i was moving that I would kill for now. I need to figure out to make one that will chill enough for ammonia concentration.

      Thanks! The build only took about a week of here and there work as the stuff came in the mail. I was on ebay for a couple months looking for the cryocooler so I was itching to get it going when I finally found a cheap one

      If ur really interested in building a nitrogen liquefier at home the u need 3 AC or 3 fridge compressor and some refrigerant for making liquid nitrogen at home. My friend build one few years ago its still working and produces 6 liters of liquid nitrogen per hour and uses 2KW power per hour.

      +derrick cheng It would be in strange quantities, because the gasses all have pretty different liquefaction temperatures (likely more argon and co2) but probably fine.
      If there was a small presence of a "warmer" gas like chlorine, this process would likely amplify the percentage of that gas, which could be bad but i don't think it would be super harmful with normal air

    Hi Ben,
    where did you get those self sealing helium connectors to refill the compressor from? I got a cryopump with compressor myself and it needs refilling too. It looks like you've used balloon grade helium. Does that work? Because everywhere there's written that only ultra pure 99.99+ helium should be used to refill the compressor or the Gifford McMahon cold head will get frozen with contaminations.

      Chuck Norris The connectors came with the cryopump+ compressor I got. In the past I have bought separate lines for other cryocoolers, they are just called helium flex lines on ebay. They seem to be fairly universal but are quite expensive.
      I got away with using balloon helium because it only needed a tiny bit more. I don't think it was the best idea but it runs fine and still works. If you can get purer helium definitely do that. Especially if you spent a lot on the cold head.

    Very cool! BenNBuilds; I'm really curious to know if you're able to build a system that could liquefy Oxygen quickly... like 80 ounces per minute? Also, if you're able to build such a system how much power would it use?

      That would be industrially big and expensive, I would go with a hampson linde cycle liquefaction. this paper describes the thermodynamics link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs10909-016-1733-3.pdf

    Why did you have to pump the chamber down? Doesn't this make it harder to make liquid gasses because lowering the pressure increases the boiling point or is it necessary to get the cryopump to work?

      +Wyatt Van Orden It'll work at room temperature and normal pressure, but all it will condense is liquid air. With a vacuum chamber you can get your own mixture of gases, or one specific gas.

    Are you using a gifford-mcmahon type cryocooler to "make" liquid air? Does the cryo head have any moving parts...? You were great on "Mythbusters:The search"...

      Yea, its just a cryopump, basically just condensing a gas on a "heatsink" on the cold finger and collecting it. yes there are a few valves inside the cold head

      +FisforFluorine You either get lucky and it comes with it, or you need to do a few hours of research to find the pinouts and just make a connector. I've had to do it before, its not awful but it is hard to find info on this stuff

    I have a davey 5000 psi compressor hooked up to a 16 hp bs. How can I make lox? I found stuff in the 1st stage valve which limits it to 1200 psi.

    How dose the helium compressor work to get the cold finger at cryogenic temperatures because all I can find on the Internet is that you need one to create an atmosphere/ gas cryofreezer

      Riley Cook It expands and contracts a closed loop of helium. The gas expands in the cold finger and contracts at the top, where it is piped away to the compressor and out through the water cooler(effectively).
      Its basic thermodynamics, look into Joule Thompson, the linde cycle, expanding gas principle, all pretty much the same principle(sortof).
      When you expand a gas the molecules seperate and loose energy (Heat) its a bit more complicated than that but its VERY useful. The potential energy turns into kinetic energy, and there are losses due to unbalanced molecular charges.

    so the vacuum pump is used to get rid of all air which contains many gasses? then refilling the chamber with pure nitrogen and using a pump to pressurize it to like 200bar or so?
    I want to do a research paper on this (college student)

      pretty much, but I only back fill it with a quarter atmosphere or so as its less thermally conductive. The chamber stays below atmospheric pressure the whole time.

    What would be required to further drop the temperature into the liquid helium range? I am trying to use MgB2 superconductors.

      A 4k cryocooler. Modifying these is really difficult, I have been working on a big joule thomson helium liquefier for a while now and its rather expensive. It uses that giant 4,500psi 12cfm compressor and over 300lbs of 304 stainless tube, I "might" finish it by the end of the summer.
      Just shop around for a 4k cryocooler, they are super rare but it would be a ton easier than anything else

    You seem to know sum things would you like to work on some advanced stuff? Here is just one design, Stirling cryogenic piston to turn air to liquid inside a tank with a bell siphon that fills a heat exchange radiator with a fan to draw air through radiator for air conditioning with the liquid air boil off returning to tank to form liquid air to complete the cycle. A closed system. I am looking for a motivated individual to help me with a few components using liquid air and super conductors. If you're interested?

      Supreme Muggy its a rotary compressor same as in air conditioner. It compresses helium to about 250psi so that it can flow in the system and perform cooling

      +Kman Meteor Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you take the helium compressor (the blue box) and hook the intake and out take to the cryopump (the big metal thing) the cryo pump has a closed chamber at the top which the helium compressor is attached to. the pump has a heat sink which exchanges with an open chamber bellow the top of the cryopump. essentially the helium compressor cools helium gas to cryo levels which is exchanged in a heat sink inside the cryopump. this cools whatever gas is in the lower chamber. the water chiller is to cool the helium compressor.

    The Siemens cooling cycle counterflow (regenerative) heat exchanger and expansion (steam) engine, that was first used in 1857 to make ice. I'm sure with some mods (a la

      just get a surface down to< -421F and it will condense if there's hydrogen gas there. It wouldn't work in a vacuum because there would be nothing to condense out. This cryocooler doesn't get that low, however

      Ну, потому что его все изолированы вакуумной изоляцией не является issuefor сам кулер . Изоляция проблема с моей системой сбора , однако, керамическая blaket я использовал имеет сумасшедший объем утечки , так что теперь , когда я использую его я согнуть до большой держатель Stainess , uches о так что есть около 10 дюймов из нержавеющей стали , что любой risidual тепла должны сделать это до конца.

      Это как радиатор внутри камеры морозильника.

      Could you think of a better way to spend free time? Hes challenging himself, learning, creating, engineering and doing a whole lot more productive things then eating Doritos and mountain dew and playing X Box all day. Or would you rather him become a drug adict and in his free time start steeling from houses and cars and becoming a menace to society? Stop hating and be happy he's not lazy or a detriment to society like alot of the younger generation is becoming.
