    Have you read the book: Liquid air, oxygen, nitrogen by Georges Claude? Part II The Commercial Liquefaction of Air Chapter is really interesting. The Siemens cooling(dense air) cycle patented by W. Siemens 1857 and the Claude cycle in 1902 using the same process.
    Hampson-Linde cycle (Joule Thomson Effect) in 1895, showing that making liquid air is hard to do. It was also interesting read what Georges Claude and Carl von Linde had to say about the technical problems they and others were having in producing large or any amount of liquid air. The Siemens counterflow (regenerative) heat exchanger was a good stating point but they still a long way to go to reach their goal liquefy a whole lot of gas !

    PSA = pressure swing adsorption. This is a method of gas separation using molecular sieve/zeolites.

    In a 10,000 psi carbon fiber composite air pressure tank, the liquid nitrogen or "frozen air" basically, can provide fast recharge time for air motor drive systems for surface and VTOL vehicles.

    Very neat! Is PSA a commercial nitrogen supplier? Air would be disastrous because of the liquid oxygen, maybe?
    I remember reading a book about the liquifaction of gases and the quest for absolute zero. One of the things that inspired me to become a chemist. Great work. Excellent balance between showing the details and reminding people that science is fun, but mother nature bites if you don't respect her.

    Would substituting the Zeolite sieve with CMS (Activated Carbon Molecular Sieve) material produce a substantial difference in the nitrogen production yield?
    Man I feel old reminiscing when Tiesto released this track. Have fond memories of it dropping at Electric Zoo on Randall's Island NYC, sometime in the early 2010's.

      No. Zeolite is to remove water and carbon dioxide, which will clog your valves when it solidifies in the tubing.

    Keep in mind : Nitrogen can kill you in closed space by replacing the Dy-oxygen you need to breathe

    I plan to reproduce your project, but i would like to build that in a ratio size of 1/10 approx. And it's because i need to realise this project at lower cost. Also because i dont have place to store that at this size. Also because i just want produce what i need, when i need and i dont need each day. And i just want produce something like 1L max for my purpose at a time, then not need more than that. Like that, i ask myself if i can use fridge compressor maybe with 23L water bottle and ceramic isolation. And regardless of the pressure absorber, i thinking to use 2 tanks of air compressor (3~4 L somethinh like that)..... Anyway, you see the idea, then did you believe that can be possible to realise that, with a better effiency/safety/storeless/costless.... Then did you also believe that could be a good idea, or you think i'm crazy and it's really not a good idea !!! ????

    A few suggestions,use copper vs SS tubing for the high pressure/inner
    tube of the regenerative heat exchanger to increase the heat transfer
    efficiency, stainless steel is about the worst conductor of all metals.
    Type K Copper has a tensile yield of about 40KSI so 1/4" copper tubing
    from the hardware store can handle 3000 psi with a 3x safety factor.
    Also decrease the spacing between the inner/outer tubes to increase
    velocity and hence heat transfer. You can shorten your heat exchangers
    considerably by these changes and increase yield . Example - Pattern the
    re-generator after a regenerative cooling jacket around a liquid rocket
    engine where the coolant(fuel) runs at high velocity thru a 'tight'
    cooling channel. Another thought is once you characterize your throttle
    valve area then replace it with a fixed diameter orifice,less thermal
    mass/inertia and like a rocket nozzle there's a contraction area ratio
    where sonic flow is achieved, about 4/1, maybe about 1/16". try putting
    the throttle valve on the inlet side of the regenerator to control
    pressure entering the orifice, called stagnation pressure. Now I'm going

      Correction - 1/160" not 1/16". BTW, your sensitivity in adjusting your needle valve maybe due to it being too large, try a micrometer needle valve, as you can see a 1/160" orifice is 0.006" i.e. very tiny.

      Im thinking of getting a 450$ scuba compressor and do the liquid air, next lett it simmer first and that nitrogen, more simmering and pure o2! no rat turd looking PSA carbon required, fractional distillation look like fun!

    Just watched your video, again. Have you redone some of the graphics? It really is first rate. Couple comments/questions. First, you seem to be drying the incoming air rather than the high pressure outlet gas. Makes sense but I wonder what the pro/con issues are. Second question relates to your comment I think you made regarding cooling after the first stage. Did you actually modify the multistage compressor so that the second stage is charged with lower temperature compressed nitrogen? I had thought you might be just pre cooling the HPA discharge prior to entering the regenerative cooling coil.
    Finally, are those corrugated plastic tubes repurposed Bain Circuits from the OR? :)

    Not sure if your still commenting on this video but absolutely brilliant job.
    Can you please expand on the idea of recycling the expanded air back to the compressor . It would seem to me that any air coming from the compressor would be chilled or heated to 0c in the ice bucket. So even if the air from the regenerative tower was coming back to the compressor below 0c would be raised back to 0c?

    Did you redo this video? I saw it earlier or another one just like it, this was more complete. I would like to build one also, but a smaller form factor. I have read about using a turbine as expander and would like to try doing that for more efficiency. I know for RO water, the pumps that take the waste water pressure to help compress incoming water use half as much energy, and so I'm thinking this might be true if using a turbine expander. How small of a turbine is needed? The math looks hard!! I have a very tiny turbocharger, maybe use its wheels? The tech paper I read said you need much lower pressure with a turbine, so that expensive 3000psi is not needed?

    Anything that cools the tubing will speed up the process. Right now I have the first stage off of the compressor go through coils/fins in an ice bath. If you want to cool below 0C with a refrigerator compressor that will work, too. Remember, this will only speed up the cool-down, which only takes 45-60 minutes for me. Your money is better spent on a high-volume compressor so you get a higher yield per hour once you have reached the target temperature.

    @imsmoother At a shop I used to work at,we soaked stainless tubing in a cooler of liquid nitrogen to soften it before bending.I have a project that I'd like to do the same.How expensive is this setup to replicate?Would your other video on regen cooling be cheaper even though the yield appears to be less?Thank You for posting

    By the by - I've seen cryogenic systems used for weed control (around 1 l LN/sqm). Have you had any experience with this? (Ref. 'Evaluation of a Cryogenic Sprayer Using Liquid Nitrogen and a Ballasted Roller for Weed Control', M. Cutulle et al. 9 October 2012, ASTM.)

    How many kWh per liter of ln2 does this setup consume ?
    Also I have a 65 CFM @ 1000 PSI compressor, would this pressure be high enough or do I need 2500/3500 psi ?

      shodanxx you can make air liquefier using AC compressors. At 2KW power from mains it produces nearly 2.2Liter liquid air per hour. I can help you build one if you want!

      Ok, Inventor calculated a factor of safety from about 2.6, should be fine. I just underestimated steel :)

      you did: 304 steel = 1.4301 EN number ; 1/4" = 6.35mm ; 0.035" = 0.9mm ; Use this: w w w . ehm-edelstahl.de/pressure.asp and you get ~360bar

    For your expansion valve, did you use a 303 stainless Generant needle valve (GE3000-4-SS) with a metal stem option or the default Kel-F stem? I'm just worried that the GE3000-4-SS with a Kel-F stem will fail at LN temperatures because the low-pressure side of my cycle isn't designed to take a sudden wave of pressure. Manufacture specs list operation temps only down to -54 C for the default Kel-F stem. I'm referencing the manufacturer specs at www.modernfluidpowerinc.com/wp-content/uploads/generant-3000-needle-valve.pdf.

      imsmoother my friend has made a LNG liquefier using 3 ac compressors. He's using small JT hx that fits inside a 1 liter glass thermos. At 2KW power draw, his machine produces 2.2 liter of LNG. He also liquefied nitrogen at nearly same rate. It takes ten minutes to get down to - 196 C.

      yes, but it will take a long time to cool down. you will also need excellent thermal insulation or else the compressor will not be able to overcome the small amount of heat loss back into the reservior.

    Where do you get the CMS pellets for your nitrogen separator?

      I found a source on Alibaba in China and had it shipped directly to me. The cost of the pellets plus shipping was less than buying it in the USA. If you can find several people that want it you can drastically reduce your costs.

      @@imsmoother, according to your nitrogen generator tutorial, 4-angstrom pores are used in the CMS. Does that mean "4A" molecular sieves could be used? I see quite a few different options for those on Amazon coming in a tan-colored spherical bead form
