  • Theater legend John Kander, who co-wrote with Fred Ebb such classic musicals as "Cabaret" and "Chicago," has a new musical opening on Broadway. "New York, New York," adapted from the 1977 film, features never-before-heard songs by Kander & Ebb, and new songs by Kander and "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Correspondent David Pogue talks with the 96-year-old Kander, Miranda, and director-choreographer Susan Stroman about the show, in which aspiring performers try to make it in "a city that never sleeps."

    When I lived in NYC they would play New York, New York at last call.. it was so beautiful and I miss it terribly. ✨ don’t know if they still do that but there’s so much magic in that song.

    A very nice story and interesting interview with Legendary Broadway Composer Kander 🎶💝 Love the way New York, NY was written, "some actor (Robert DeNiro)" doesn't like the song....hence, the unforgettable tune came to be ~ and now, Alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda - This will be Good!

    There's actually a surprise at the end of the show that they show here, but the camera is too zoomed in for you to be able to tell what's happening. It's so cool, it gave me chills. I would expect at least a Scenic Design Tony nomination for this. The audience audibly gasped.
    One thing I will say is that, if you go see it, be prepared to stand up and sing "New York, New York" after the curtain call. I was in the third row and Colton Ryan (the male lead) was singling out anyone who wasn't singing. 🤣

    • @DavidPogue
      @DavidPogue ปีที่แล้ว +3

      YES about the surprise!! Frankly, I'm pleased that the production even let us show the closing number... a showstopper if there ever was one!

      Love that you saw this show! I’m on the west coast so not sure I’ll have the chance.The surprise sounds fabulous. I’ve been following Colton Ryan’s career for a long time, huge fan! When I first saw he landed this part I was thrilled for him. I’ve loved him in films and other theatre roles so I sensed it was just a matter of time … and here he is!

      @@eastwestview I love that he's nominated for a Tony opposite Ben Platt since he got his start as Ben's understudy and then they did the DEH film together. (Which I love, I hate when people badmouth it. It was beautiful.) And now they're Tony nominees together. It's such a full circle moment.

      A Chorus Line, about aspiring dancers from all over auditioning for a show ran for 15 years and gave 6,137 performances .42nd St, about a girl from Allentown, Pennsylvania getting off the bus and becoming a star gave 3,486 performances. Facts disagree with your statement. Both went on to have productions across the globe.
