    As a game developer myself talking about #1. To my knowledge bullet drop/decreased range is done on silenced weapons as a balancing mechanic. something that is silent, doesnt appear on radar, etc is pretty overpowered if you can use it at long range. So its not that we got it "wrong" just that we want to keep it fair. Ya hear me?

    • @kylele23
      @kylele23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Zac Ward Subsonic bullets. Typically used with suppressors to actually have quiet bullets(since sound also comes from bullets breaking the sound barrier) by reducing the speed and therefore increasing drop of bullets.

    • @MrVolodus
      @MrVolodus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not(only) balance issue. Suppressed weapons are best used with subsonic ammo.
      Subsonic ammo travels at 300m/s, normal travels at 900m/s.
      So (ignoring slow down, angle of fire and so on ...) if you shoot at target 900m away, supersonic bullet will fly there in 1 second while droping 5 meters.
      Subsonic bluet will hit target in 3 seconds, dropping 45 meters.

  • @agentmikster44
    @agentmikster44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +372

    Simple.
    Guns without a suppressor use supersonic ammo.
    Guns with a suppressor use subsonic ammo.
    Supersonic ammo with a suppressor isn't all that quiet as the crack of the bullet will be very obviously a gunshot.
    Subsonic ammo is much quieter at the cost of bullet velocity (range/damage).
    There's your answer.

      You can use supersonic ammo in a suppressed gun or subsonic in a non suppressed. The question is how does a suppressed effect the bullet. If you’re changing the type of round depending on if the gun is suppressed or not, you’re not answering the question, your avoiding it.

      not just "drop" but an over all "low" velocity round equating to sub sonic literally...which means "at distances" you can hear distinctions between shots+hits. 343.2 m/s or 1126 fps rounds. It isnt based on caliber of round or any connotation to size...just if were talkin a pure "silent assassin" type setting...quiet discharge/quiet round intended for covert operations so does it really matter if travel speed is lessened if the targets are going to be typically in a night setting being snuck up on or struck in a unified fashion as a squad. In this scenario were talking about 2 variables noise and muzzle flash.....when were considering that a gunshot could be heard by a whole area vs just who can see it being fired i think we can figure out what has be being done for the better part of 70 years...in covert operations with special forces troops esp the 45acp used in a silenced modded 1911 in wwII...to now nothings changed if anything for the better since now u can use a special grain+barrel implementations to slow down other rounds that wouldnt on their own be sub sonic. Just saying though its only obvious at the speed of 1100 fps that the bigger the round the more stopping power....45. vs 9mm or a 40./10mm all at the same speed i mean its only basic math. Only matters how many rounds you wish to necessitate

    The bullet drop / reduced accuracy / reduced damage are added for balancing purposes. The real life issue with suppressors is they increase the weapon lenght making them less practical to handle or putting a short firearm into a holster. In games this isn't an issue since the player just pulls all his guns out of his ass.

    • @Carlisho
      @Carlisho 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Horny Fruit Flies But then again, the ONLY benefit of a supressor is actually NOT a benifit anymore in today gaming standars. Just think about it, the supressor only makes the gun harder to hear, that worked 10 years ago when people played with their crap TV speakers. Now even the most casual gamer has a headset on while gaming and with a headset you clearly still hear and know where a supressed gun is shooting from. Just watch Rainbow Six Siege gameplay, the supressor is USELESS, more recoil, less damage, less range and still people know where you are as soon as you start shooting. Its not even an option anymore. The ONLY game that has made just a bit of justice is CoD Black Ops 3 which made supressors to not drop the damage of the weapon but it was only in Sniper Rifles.

    • @Garryoo72

      it is actually the same.
      Silencers and Supressors are different words for the same thing, even the developers called them "silencer" at some point. Cause it "silences" the shot it does "supress the sound" ... that is the use of it ... and it does that ... And if you wanna be totally correct it is called "sound supressor". So even calling it just "supressor" is wrong. :P

    • @anthonylongoria7718
      @anthonylongoria7718 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silencer is basically just the new name for Suppressors, it's why you can still hear the gunshot quite clearly, all it is really meant to do is suppress the muzzle flash(Really useful for sniping at night in a military operation wouldn't you think?). The idea that they silence the gun mainly came about due to tv shows, movies and games.

      In some cases I've heard of sub-sonic round used in higher caliber weapons for greater suppressing and actual silencing at a certain range, like the new ALIAS rifles, but, sub-sonic ammunition is reported to actually have the greater drop demonstrated in battlefield and call of duty. It still doesn't make sense for soldier's that are expecting front-front combat to use sub-sonic rounds, mostly because it doesn't make sense to quite your rifle in that sort of situation and because their primary use would be to mask where you're shooting from. Besides that, the whole point of super-sonic rounds are to penetrate thicker armor, dampening that in combat would be silly. at least with my understanding of suppressors.

    • @davidguest3506
      @davidguest3506 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      subsonic ammo was only ever used in handguns in WWII in combat. Apart from thus the idea of subsonic is retarded because it is hardly lethal traveling at less than a third of standard velocity

    Respectfully, Mass times velocity does NOT equal the energy behind a projectile. The formula for Kinetic Energy (KE) is KE=1/2mass times velocity^2. Kinetic Energy basically means the amount of moving energy a projectile has.

      i'm pretty sure about this as i'm 3 months from getting my diploma but don't take my word for it. When gun powder combust, the bullet is accelerated. F=ma, mass of bullet and a of bullet in barrel. assume a is const, therefore, f is const. now back to the topic, the longer the barrel, the more distance the bullet is accelerated. you know that energy= force*distance. force, as mentioned above, is const. the suppressor provides a longer barrel, thus distance is longer. E=FD1

    • @MyChilliFeets
      @MyChilliFeets 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Muyao Liu I get what you are saying, which brings the question of when you calculate Force=mass times Acceleration do you use the adverage Acceleration through and slightly beyond the barrel or do you use the initial acceleration. I asked my former math teacher and he said you would use the adverage Acceleration. This means if he is correct because the Acceleration decreases slightly as it travels through the barrel the Adverage Acceleration decreases slightly and exponentially but the distance increases. But eventually the barrel will become long enough to make the adverage Acceleration small enough to negate the distance the bullet travels leaving an upside down quadratic on a graph where the x-axis is barrel length and the y-axis is the energy behind the bullet. I'm not entirely sure about this but the problem has been bugging me since I woke up this morning and I had to get it out of my head.

    • @mannbar124
      @mannbar124 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A longer barrel means a longer time for the expanding povder to build pressure behind the bullet and therefore more force to push the bullet this leads to a bigger acceleration. As he said in the video if you have a extremely long barrel the friction of the bullet would be so big that it can not be accelerated any further.
      So a longer barrel means bigger acceleration and by this a higher velocity.
      I do not want to be rude or anything but it is written "average" without a "d" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) in it.

    Boi, suppressed weapons in battlefield are meant to mimic weapons uisng SUB SONIC ammunition. The bullets drop more because their velocity is decreased, meaning that gravity has more time to take effect. This is also why some weapons have a damage penalty, less velocity.

      A long range rifle isn't going to use sub sonic ammo though, so his analogy of long range shots is correct. Except he did leave out that the add weight of the suppressor does lower the point of impact due to the slight bend in the barrel. This could be perceived as increased bullet drop.
      In short range firearms sub sonic might be used, but bullet drop is negligible at that range. Sub sonic bullets are normally heavier in addition to slower. So depending on the ratio of speed to weight, the muzzle energy could potentially not change. Also, calibers like .45 acp wouldn't have a "damage reduction" as they're naturally sub sonic, unless it's a +p or +p+ round.

    • @swiftrian
      @swiftrian 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's called balancing. It's a videogame not a simulator. If the supressors made more noise and did a little more damage why would anyone use the standard weapons? You'd just have a golden eye party running around pew pewing instead of bang banging/pewing

    • @MrVolodus
      @MrVolodus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Agent Ham I know guys that shoot subsonic .308 through 24" rifles ... yes, it's useless for long range but that is also true for BF3 subsonic ammo. Bullet is so slow, that it is very hard to hit anything moving 100m away.
      That's why I don't use suppressor for sniper class rifles in BF3 ... but you have that option, for whatever is your reason.

    • @ge4
      @ge4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even the .45 acp has more drop.. Let's say that your stock .45 acp is 850 fps out of the muzzle. If you add the suppressor it's going to be like 800 fps out of the muzzle.. So game are in fact right about that.

    • @ryanclifton6149
      @ryanclifton6149 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Maskie no without subsonic ammunition the bullet would still be tremendously loud, there for to get the best results you need a suppressor plus subsonic (subsonic meaning it is slower than the speed of sounds, and does not produce a sonic boom) ammunition. If you do not have both together the gun will still make a lot of noise. All of this would result in less "damage" and long distance capabilities of the firearm equipped with a suppressor.

    Regarding "bullet drop": Your barrel may be longer, giving the bullet more way to accelerate.
    BUT: The noise suppression of the muzzle-bang is only one part of suppressing the weapon as a whole, used by special forces. Regular bullets generate a supersonic-bang while flying through the air, allowing bystanders to notice them quite clearly and even pinpoint the shooter. To cancel out that effect, subsonic ("cold loaded" ?) bullets are used to stay below that magic velocity. With the lower velocity and equal bullet mass a higher bullet drop may occur on longer distances. This even disproves your energy thought.
    IF however you use the same ammunition in your suppressed gun, you won't notice that effect....

    My one gripe about this video: What if game designers just take into account that you'd use *subsonic* ammunition with suppressors? Subs make suppressors more effective at making the gun quiet, and the reduced velocity/increased bullet weight would increase bullet drop and affect the "damage."

      I'm speaking about existing games, namely Call Of Duty and Battlefield. If you consider that game developers are aware of subsonic ammo (which they should be) and they take those factors into account then that would explain my points in my first comment. Still not 100% true to life but at least better than was described in the video.
      For example:
      -Subsonics are typically affected much more by bullet drop.
      -Subsonics generate different recoil impulses than standard velocity ammo (more of a thump vs a sharp kick)
      -Subsonics are worse at penetrating body armor than their standard velocity counterparts
      -Standard velocity ammo does more damage to soft targets (there are a few good ballistic gel test videos on this)
      Those are just a few facts I can think of right now, you can draw your own conclusions from them.

    • @TimbavatiLion
      @TimbavatiLion 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Actually, game Designers DO take this into cosideration. If in battlefield you equip a suppressor on a weapon, the bullet speed drops dramatically to around 300m/s. The game forces you to use subsonic ammo with suppressors. Therefore Robs here video is pretty much pointless, except for the recoil.
      I guess DICE and co decided to not put that in, as it would turn suppressed guns into super-easy-to-use weapons, breaking all game balance. Trading off sound for velocity is a good balance, trading sound AND almost no recoil for just velocity, not good balance.

    you forgot the most important misconception. the fact that in most videogames you can shoot a suppressed pistol in a room and the guards in the room next to it will not notice. hahah even the pin hitting (without a bullet in the chamber) is loud enough to startle a person and make him question what was that sound, it's clearly impossible to fire a suppressed gun in a room, or outside, and not being heard within a radius of at least 100 meters

      Alexandros Nicolaou There is one gun that can be silenced enough to where you can barely even notice that it's been fired. But there's one issue with this: the trigger pull is louder than the shot. XD (If you're wondering, I'm talking about the De Lisle Carbine.)

      @alexnicolaou3579 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ForsakenBacon yes that is a fact, and anything louder than 100dB can't be called stealthy. its a misconception most shooting games have, from the earliest hitman games to the latest fps, they propose that a suppressed gun is so quiet, it can be fired around the corner without anyone having a clue. maybe in a noisy street environment with lots of bavkground noise it can be true, but even then you have to be lucky that something louder like a garbage can falling or a loud car passing by, muffles the gunshot

    The colt 1911 uses the browning style of recoil, like most modern pistols. AAC's Ti-rant suppressors use that spring to mitigate the rocking action the barrel makes in order to cycle the gun. The ASAP spring does not help reduce recoil. In fact the opposite.

    Okay let me explain, why in games a suppressor decreases the damage, whereas in real life it actually increases. The thing is that if a player what's to be less loud or in a way silent he will use a suppressor, but if a suppressor also increased the damage, then it will be a win win situation for the player.What the game designers what is that if the player wants to silent and sneaky that he will have to choose the suppressor in exchange with less damage, but if he what's more damage to kill his enemy quickly then his has to give away the sneaky technique and be loud and vulnerable by giving away his position. So it is to test their decision making skill.

      Alright, if you just run a suppressor on a firearm, the range and damage will increase, and you will notice a little decrease in sound. To make a suppressor effective, you use sub-sonic rounds. These rounds hold less powder resulting in less damage, and less range for the perks of a quieter shot. The guns in the video games would likely be shooting sub-sonic rounds, thus why you have the 'silenced shot' and the decrease in range/damage. The title Battlefield 3 states this to be the case when you equip a suppressor, namely, that cold-loaded rounds are being used instead of standard rounds. Thus, suppressed weapons in Battlefield have less range because they are using low-velocity rounds.

  • @21josepollo21
    @21josepollo21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +915

    I like the ideas in this video, but I do have some things to point out. It might be a bit of a long one.
    While I'm sure other people have stated this already, you should know that your first and third issues are only true if the gun is using standard ammunition with the silencer, which is very uncommon.
    Firstly, what is typically used is something called subsonic rounds. This is a round with a significantly lesser powder load. This is intended to lower the velocity of the round to, well, subsonic speeds. This means that it goes slower than the speed of sound, because a great deal of the sound that comes from a gun firing is from the sonic boom created by the bullet. This would mean that the bullet drop would in fact be greater, because it would take longer for the bullet to get to its target, allowing more downwards acceleration by gravity.
    However, this makes your second point far more accurate, as a lower powder load always means less recoil.
    Your third point about damage is also not strictly incorrect. Yes, the barrel would give it more time to accelerate, but it with the lower powder load, it would not be significant enough to counteract it. This would overall give it less energy, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. An often used round for stealth operations in special forces is a .22 caliber subsonic round. The reason it is used is due to the fact that it has such a low velocity. At close enough ranges (a few dozen meters) it has enough energy to pierce the skull, but not enough to exit out the other side. This causes it to bounce off the other side of the skull, and further tear up the brain, ensuring a quick and quiet kill. In addition, bullets with lower velocities are more likely to remain inside a person's body, causing more damage in the long run.
    Anyways, sorry for the long comment, but that was bugging me a little. If there's anything I got wrong, please feel free to correct me!

    • @MathewTerry
      @MathewTerry 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Very well put!!! I may debate the scull penetration at 36+ meters w/ a .22 subsonic or damage done by lower velocity rounds with Hydro static shock being a factor, but those change greatly depending on cal. and bullet type/weight so I'll just call it a good explanation.

    • @multirampage1
      @multirampage1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +DeadlyEmoAngel xX Yes you can use suppressors with most rifles because .223 is not the only rifle caliber you know? .50 bmg, .338 lapua, .408 cheytac are all heavy bullets that even when moving slower than the speed of sound can cause a lot of damage. Yes using suppressors has its cons but if you need to be silent that's the price you pay.

      DeadlyEmoAngel xX I think the most common method of reducing bullet velocity is reducing the amount of gun powder, and even if you are using heavier bullets, the added weight isn't enough to neutralize the, sometimes very high, loss of velocity.

    I'm pretty sure videogames did this on purpose. Because in real life, supressors deal more damage and makes the shots quiet. Video game developers wouldn't want this, because then everyone in the game would use supressors and nothing else. That just makes it pointless to even add an option for no supressors because everyone would just use supressors anyway. They wanted to make a sort of cost for having your shots be quiet, so that not everyone would use supressors in the game. They made it that way so that having your gun without supressors is still a viable option.
    In simpler words, they wanted it to be balanced.

    The spring system is called a Nilsen device and without it, you won't load the next round on many pistols. Also, the first round through a suppressor is always louder unless it is a wet silencer. This the reason when on operations, you usually piss into the silencer so the first round does not have the louder "crack". *tips from a machinist who makes suppressors.

    • @kickinthegob

      There are some more things about suppressors as well, such as a loss in efficiency with sustained firing and the need for sub-sonic ammunition to get the full benefit of suppression. I have a friend who works for www.a-tec.no/ In Norway it is considered rude to shoot without a silencer as it damaged your hunting dog's hearing and annoys the neighbors. Yeah, because you are probably shooting while moving or spraying. Unlike games like Battlefield and Call of Duty (Yes, I still like those games), Counter Strike forces you to learn it's mechanics: Different Accuracy on each gun and Spray Pattern. Counter Strike certainly isn't realistic, but it's a very balanced game. Try playing competitve matches, win or lose you will learn something from the game itself or your fellow teammates.
      Don't worry, I used to hate CS-Source because I was so used to playing Modern Warfare 2.

    Video games put -range on suppressors in game because of attachment balancing.

      Jup, pretty much. Imagine a video game where suppressors would only give benfits. Pretty much everyone would run around with these. Sometimes its not about realism but balancing the game. I mean, its still a video game, right?
      But this video should be shown to all the "i play a lot of CoD i know how guns work" kids.

      That is absolutely true. That would be more realistic. But then again, they should also add that surpressors wear off up until to a point where they eventually "break". If you wanted R6 to become more realistic. :)

    What about subsonic bullets? Its important part of silence shouting. Such a bullets have less speed and as a result less energy.

    • @deanc91

      For one, subsonic loads of supersonic rounds are almost never issued with suppressors. Military and police will almost always run standard supersonic loads through their suppressors. For two, the suppressor will still increase the velocity of the subsonic round.
