Really enjoyed this shootout! I appreciate how transparent you are about the comparison process and I think this answers a lot of people's questions about how authentic these pedals sound. And, it's always nice to hear an original Model T. People have many preconceived notions about how that amp should sound. Also, I am relieved the Model feT held its own here! 😅We were the first company to do a Model T pedal emulation, but I'm glad people have continued to push the envelope in that space. I continue to be impressed by the Exegol. I think its added presence control makes a huge difference especially with the lower gain settings. I tried that back in 2017 with the early Model feT and never got it quite right, so props to Kuro for making it happen. My only complaints: 1) level matching could have been better. Exegol was quite a bit louder than the others. 2) IMO, the pedals should have been sent straight into an IR just like the amp. The Model feT and Exegol both have power amp emulation circuitry already, so the extra coloration could change the comparison. Thanks again for making this happen.
Dang! The Exegol had the closest tone to my ears! The model fet sounded great too! All of them sounded good, but the model fet and exegol sounded the closest to me👍👍👍
So it seems to matter more at high gain but to my ear, the Model T is just a lot more open and 3D. At high gain, it's like you can swim into the tone whereas with the others, while not bad, don't measure up in the same way. They're shallow beside the real thing. I guess that makes sense with the signal being pushed through all that circuitry and then the enormous output transformers too. I had a 1st gen years ago. Loved it. Was sorry to see it go but themz were tough times.
I have a first gen Model T and I love it, sounds super clear and warm. Very different from modern high gain amps. I'd love for you to do a video running different OD/Dist pedals in front of the Model T to see the tone variations.
You went above and beyond with this one! Really dig the scientific approach. One small gripe, level matching wasn't the best. Also, I need an Exegol now.
This is the video I've been preying that someone would make since I bought my Model FeT about a year ago, so I cannot thank you enough. Having said that, this is what I've learnt from watching this; Yes, apparently I had no idea on what an actual Sunn T sounded like, which would be a bad thing apart from the fact that now I know it's real sound yes, my Model FeT was far better than I've been giving it credit for. It's taken me a year to understand just how good it was (regardless of the fact it's the most permanent part of my pedal chain). I couldn't decide which I thought sounded better. It was a toss up between the Model FeT and the Exegol. It's addition of the Exegol's presence control gives it the slight advantage I think but would I spend the money to replace my Model Fet with one? Hell no, I'm more than happy with it. Thanks again!
For me the two big winners were the Model feT & the exegol. The feT easily sounded the most natural in the low gain stage whereas the exegol's presence was a bit much in that context, however in the medium and high gain stages the exegol excels and dominates everything else. I even kind of liked the restrained low-fi quality of the Burning Sunn a bit too, I suppose it comes down to the context of its use. The Giant Sound had the least character of the four to me, but I bet if I hadn't heard it in a shootout with these others I'd probably have a higher opinion of it. All solid boxes, dude. Thanks for putting this together.
First, the Exegol nails the tone in every sound demonstration. Second, to truly use the Exegol as a preamp, the middle output jack must be used instead of the left side output jack. This gives the pedal more headroom in volume and takes advantage of an 18-volt adapter. Only downside to using the middle output jack is there is no signal passing through the pedal unless it is on. This scientific experiment further reenforces I made the correct decision when I purchased the Exegol as the best preamp pedal to clone the tone of a first-generation Sunn O))) Model T.
Interesting video man, glad somebody did this. Would also be cool if as a side quest you compared these results to Line 6 Helix’s take on the Sunn Model T sound. Cheers!
Kudos for the amount of effort you put in to this. The Exogol sounded closest to me, albeit with a ton more low end which seemed to make it a bit muddy at times. The others didn't sound as 'open' as the Sunn to my ears
Working on a Matamp video next . Won’t be like that . But it will be a shootout between the GT1, , GT120MV and GT200 . Hopefully that will peak some interest.
I’m incredibly impressed by the Exegol. I have the Model feT but the Exegol sound way more open like the amp and has the right kind of low mid roar! The Model feT is close too, compared to the other two at least, but still far off in comparison to the Exegol.
What a great video man! Very well organized and carried out. Really pro. I think that the Exegol stands out. Close second is the modelfet, although in your previous video where you compared these 2, the modelfet sounded more amp-like to me.. Keep up the good work!
the exegol seems closest to me (with the FeT being a very close second - probably indistinguishable if you didn't have them side by side), but what I got out of this video is that the actual Model T sounds amazing. the burning sunn sounded less full spectrum, more choked. might make it better in a mix but definitely didn't sound as good alone as the others did.
Thank you I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it . We didn’t want to go overboard with the time of this one . But will have more stuff like this in the future !
The Model FeT is a beast, absolutely love mine. Currently got it adding some light drive at the end of the chain in front of my head. It's super subtle but really thickens up the bass tone. Also love it paired up with the EAE Longsword, for bass or guitar. I'm pretty bias towards the Model FetT but the Exegol sounded great too. I think with either you're going to get an incredible sound.
I just got my Sun? No V2 Model T Preamp yesterday, and tonight I really got into it. I was surprised by how dense the tone is. Ive watched this video quite a few times, wondering which ones the V2 sounds like. The one it sounds really close to, is the model feT on my guitar amp. I liked the width and clarity of the fuzz on the feT, which is like the V2. It was really nice to hear all of these pedals together to hear the subtle differences, and compare them to the V2. I’m trying to figure which of these I want yo use with my bass setup. Would love to hear your thoughts on which one you think would mesh, control wise with a bass amp. My bass amp is a GK Fusion 800S, which has an overdrive circuit? Instead of getting the V2 again I thought it would be nicer to have a little different taste of the SUNN O. Thanks! Great recording.
Great video, I love the experiment.. I used to own a model T and regret very much selling it. Now I'm looking for a similar sound without having to buy a 5000 dollar amp.. My only criticism with the vid is that none of those tones seem to be the super crushing tone that I associate with the model T. Maybe it's just the video format throwing me off.. Great vid tho!!
I think what is neat about the midnight amplification pedal is that no one was really doing any amp-n-a-box of sunn or matamp before midnight amplification came along. Too bad that they were very expensive for the time, took forever to ship from Australia, and nic some how dropped the ball and started shit with Ryan Adams over the font, from that pedal, being used on a shirt.

All the preamps sound great. The Sun model T and Kuro Voiced more similarly. The rest of them would need more tweaking. The Kuro has the most Bass more than the actual amp. I get the annoyance of that the Reissue isn’t actually a reissue, but calling it the “Sunn 5150” is completely unfair. The reissue is a great amp, and it’s by FAAR more similar to a Model T than a 5150 when it comes to sound.. the 5150 sounds like a scooped fart in comparison to the Model T Reissue.. I’ve A/B’d my Reissue with both the 5150 and the Model T and honestly, while they are different, I know no other amp (except clones) that sounds more similar to a Model T, at least if you want a similar amount of gain.
Just realised though that there is the Peavey 5150 and the Fender 5150, hehe. I assumed the 5150 as Peavey.. And I actually have very little experience with the Fender one.
