Instead of building the complete dyson sphere in your home star. The best practice is to build the dyson sphere in the star with the highest luminosity factor (top left corner of the dyson sphere editor) in your star cluster, generally O category (class) stars are the highest I've encountered with x2.4 times the luminosity factor. Then use ray receivers (in 8 octant pattern of a sphere for constant output) in a planet (with least orbit and rotation axis inclination) of that star to collect photons (which should be ×2.4 times greater now because of the star you chose) and then ship it back to your home base for anitmater fuel for artificial sun. I have 24 Artificial Suns running my factory when I barely need 10.
I am currently working on a 2.509L O type star, I picked it for one single purpose, because I was mildly let down when I covered my first star in two full spheres and it was still day time on my planets, when I found this O type star...with a planet INSIDE the maximum sphere range...I was very excited, but it does mean that it is going to take a very, very long time to build this. But I feel like it will be very worth it even if it won't be as I expect (bright on the night side of the planet). I feel as if the Blue giant or Red giant could have had a planet on the inside as well, but I didnt even take a second look once I saw how dim they are compared to this big blue baby. It is pretty fun seeing the difference between shooting sails from a planet up close compared to shooting them from a planet that has an 8 hour orbit and the sails take over a minute to reach their target.
@@firedragon159 It does take a very very long time, so if you want a full sphere in the shortest time, build it with the smallest possible radius. One thing I don't think you mentioned. For the research, to be able to make more than just a basic ring around the star, you need the Dyson Sphere Stress System tech. Each time you research it, it gives you +15 degrees of area to build in. This was not immediately obvious when I was first jumping in to design my sphere and it was frustrating me a lot because I nothing jumped out and told me I needed that. AFTER researching the first step to it, it made sense. But nothing indicated I needed that.

Is what you say the explanation ? DO i have to research Dyson Sphere Stress until I have the total degrees filled (+15 each time until 180 degrees ?!) Thanks a lot for your answer
@@madamepop5342 Correct. You have to research Dyson Sphere Stress at least once to be able to build beyond the middle line. It's a limited repeatable research. Yo - a good tip to share with your viewers - putting grav lenses in your power collectors not only doubles your power output, but also gives you 100% uptime, so it's like getting 4x the power!
@@JDPlays A bit of a clarification, the lenses don't actually force the collector to be active at all times, it just makes the zone that the collecter has to be in to "see" the star (and therefore swarm or sphere) dramatically larger. If you put collector on an equator and put a lens in, you will lose exposure for about 1/3 of the night. If I remember the ratios, one collector will at max output generate 5 photons per minute, one lens last 4 minutes inside a collector and boosts production to 10 photons per minute

At 7:13, it is longitude of the ascending node. It won’t change anything with an inclination of zero except the starting point, but if you increase the inclination, it changes the starting point of the ascent and therefore rotates the orbit around the star.
Nice explanation. It might be good to explain/show the latitude research as I've seen streamers get stuck when they first unlock the sphere tech and can only build at the "equator" of the sphere.
Orbit inclination and Longitude of (AN) both together create the equator of the dyson sphere. Try tweaking them both at some values other than 0. Every longitude & the equator is a geodesic or a great circle.

Does the several layers of the dyson sphere block each other from the sunlight, making several full spheres useless around a single star? Also, i heard when a segment has been filled, you can land on it. So to warp, to another system, do you need to leave an opening?
Light passes thru the sphere to your planets so i expect it would from from one shell to another without issue and as i cant land on the JD Plays around my sun, i doubt a complete sphere would be any different, they have no collision boxes
the reason that light dissipates is because light tends to separate from each other, because they don't go on the line that the light source points but at angles, separating the photons, and dissipating the light, but the dyson sphere in this case circles the the sun all around so every photon is capture.
@@i.p.7687 This has very little to do with dissipation/dispertion of light. As you say, a complete dyson sphere should catch all the photons, so a complete dyson sphere should yeild the same energy no matter if built close or far (and building far is just more expansive). From which one can actually deduce that energy per square meter decreases as one over the square distance from a star..
Is there any reason to not just have a single swarm orbit or a single dyson sphere? Do the power receiver dishes receive the power from the sphere? Can you put a receiver antenna on every planet?
1. No there is no reason to limit yourself to 1 and it is generally more efficient and advisable to have multiple swarm orbits and spheres as these generate more power 2. Yes ray receivers receive power from the sphere/swarm and as such need direct “sight” with the sun, aka they only work in the day or on the day side of a planet 3. Yes and the receivers would be able to receive power from the sphere/swarm regardless of distance and only limited by the daylight hours and how many receivers you possess :)
I love your videos, I’m not sure how many people fall into this category, but if you would do a section as to why this is necessary before you go through the how and why that would be nice. I like to figure stuff out on my own for the most part and I’m at the point in the game where I’m making gravity matrix and dark fog is not a problem on any planets but I want to figure out how to eliminate the hives. I see the “dyson sphere” items and I can’t figure out if this is to do that or I just have to go attack them with weapons and drones. My point being is that I want a general idea of what this does before the marvelously done in depth explanation
I mass produced every component of the research for the Greenies, it took 3-4 days to finish, but when I finally had Green cubes... damn did they come in fast! xD
so to put it short: build the sphere on maximum size to allow adding as many elements as possible. Something else: What happens, if you envelope a planet within the sphere? Can ray recaivers get power even at night then?

does star lumination affects how much energy can you get from dyson swarm and dyson sphere? for example B type star has 3 times more lumination than M starting star if it does, it means that you should not build it over your starting systems sun...
Guess my question would be what the difference in layer sizes mean for output, how do nodes vs frames effect output, and if you have one full sphere is there any point in doing multiple layers on the same star?
Multi layers are fine, and I tried to answer the question about nodes vs frames but it seemed to boil down to structure points (i think from memory i mentioned it in the video) every structure point is worth 150W so more frames = more points
No, leaving the home system is totally optional, but rare resources make things a lot easier. Also, you can build the dyson sphere on another system (where the star luminosity multiplier is greater) to get extra energy.
JD: Great video -- hands down the best explanation I've seen. Quick clarification: the rockets for the sphere are *consumed* like the sails, yes? Not an asset of the launching silo like the transport vehicles are for the logistics stations? (That's the only thing that makes sense but figured I'd ask.) Thanks again.
So my confusion comes with, how did you get to be able to cover the whole sphere, I only have the option to make just a single band around the equator line, does this come from later when you get more interplanetary tech or the like, I've only just unlocked they yelow cubes and am trying like crazy to get some interplanetary logistics things built so i can make centralized production lines that just use the interplanetary transports as storage, requesting the intermediate items and outputting the next chain of creation. my bigger problem is getting rid of or making use of the byproducts from the refining processes. occasionalyl i feel i'm going ot justh ave to destroy a storage tank of 10k Supheric acid, or hydrogen, or refined oil, just so there's space for my production lines to put more byproduct and keep producing the material i need,
balancing oil is something i cant help with... as for building the sphere there is a tech each time you do the tech it gives you another 15 degress up and down to slowly make a sphere
@@ElderonAnalas Oil has been a struggle for me too, hence the line of refineries stretching half way around the planet. Early on I found that I had an abundance of refined oil which was hampering hydrogen production. Ended up with about 20 full storage of refined oil. I ended up replacing my energised carbon power plant with a hydrogen powered one, which is helping at the moment. With stackable storage I am leaning on the side of building up massive reserves as its my first playthrough so not sure what I will need lots of in the future. what is the point of the different layers? can you fill in multiple layers and get power from each? do the different color starts give you different power levels?
Given the resource cost of building a swarm and its temporary nature, do you recommend skipping it for the sphere? Another way, is the power of a swarm a requirement to build the sphere?
It mostly depends on how early you can automate swarms effrctively , if you automate them you might as well shoot them up for power if you're getting by with power untill the sphere then its fine , swarms are just a okay boost in power anyways as you'd not get a ton out of them untill you're super mass producing. Its up to the player really you have a few options so do what you'd think would be cool or fun or effecient
I'm enjoying playing this game but am still not clear on what the actual goal of the game is or what incentives there are to building the dyson sphere? Is it just a constant race to attain more power generation ability?
Im having a problem where it wont let me place any new nodes it just says deployment conflict. i cant find any info on what im doing wrong. any ideas ?
You keep saying the shape is purely cosmetic but cant the radius affect if you get energy/shoot parts all day or half day. EX if you build one ring closer to the star than your planet then one further out then your planet (so its orbit is sandwiched between two sphere ring/swarm orbits, won't the outer ring power you/build at night and the inner power you/build during the day since the receivers and launchers need line of sight?
I ended up building a fairly HUGE sphere(like 75% slider) , I spent like 200 hours to complete the frame but I am not sure if the solar sail after it converts into a shell has a lifespan, I think they do because I can never seem to complete the shell totally. I need to find definitive info before I burn more time into completing it, kinda don't wanna waste time on parts that depreciate.
I saw this video at the wrong time :( I started my dyson sphere but I didn't know the best way to do it so I put the nodes as close as possible to each other, that means that I need a lot of resources for each node and have a lot of nodes, idk if keep going with that, it consumes a lot of resources, believe me, a lot, I just have 1 latitud lvl in the tecnologie and I need to launch almost 60k rockets to the dyson sphere, idk what to do, should I create another dyson sphere and remove everything from this one and create another one? Or just delete some nodes?
You can leave what you have there already, or delete any not built nodes and just make another sphere around/inside the first sphere i think my current sphere is 3 layers deep now
Help me pleeeese!!! I have too much hydrogen (from yellow science)!!! I have no idea how to use it. Red science is perfectly balanced, so I can't use it there. It's not good!
Oh, and your power, is never amazing or never enough i should say. If your not making a constant 500-1000 MW without solar cells, then your not making enough energy.
I think it's right-click on the icons to remove them from the queue. (You can also pause/resume the queue if you need to reduce power consumption, etc. in the early game.)

Just started the yellows so a long way from this project. But you made one. This game is great but it can become so much more...
Modders are already starting to add, change, and expand on the game!
Is there any reason to not just have a single swarm orbit or a single dyson sphere? Do the power receiver dishes receive the power from the sphere? Can you put a receiver antenna on every planet?
1. No there is no reason to limit yourself to 1 and it is generally more efficient and advisable to have multiple swarm orbits and spheres as these generate more power
2. Yes ray receivers receive power from the sphere/swarm and as such need direct “sight” with the sun, aka they only work in the day or on the day side of a planet
3. Yes and the receivers would be able to receive power from the sphere/swarm regardless of distance and only limited by the daylight hours and how many receivers you possess :)
@@mystics7787 Thanks for taking the time.
I have almost started getting my Gravity Matrixes automated, takes sooo much effort lol
I Just did a video on them yesterday, worth a watch to get a idea of how big the build is and the ratios
@@JDPlays indeed I shall check it out
I mass produced every component of the research for the Greenies, it took 3-4 days to finish, but when I finally had Green cubes... damn did they come in fast! xD
so to put it short: build the sphere on maximum size to allow adding as many elements as possible.
Something else: What happens, if you envelope a planet within the sphere? Can ray recaivers get power even at night then?
I don't have a answer to your 2nd question... the answer is yes... some, how much im not sure and more testing is needed
ge·o·des·ic :P it means shortest path between two points
grat·i·cule a network of lines representing meridians and parallels, on which a map or plan can be represented. (it follows the parallels of plans)
awesome vid tho, much appreciated
Thanks for that!
does star lumination affects how much energy can you get from dyson swarm and dyson sphere? for example B type star has 3 times more lumination than M starting star
if it does, it means that you should not build it over your starting systems sun...
Yes it does, and your correct
Hey JD i like this game but please don't forgot to concrete the world on factorio
Not forgetting, currently concreting a world in Dyson sphere, u know so i feel at home!
Very Concise very helpful thank you
Guess my question would be what the difference in layer sizes mean for output, how do nodes vs frames effect output, and if you have one full sphere is there any point in doing multiple layers on the same star?
Multi layers are fine, and I tried to answer the question about nodes vs frames but it seemed to boil down to structure points (i think from memory i mentioned it in the video) every structure point is worth 150W so more frames = more points
I haven't even left from my home system and already build dyson sphere. Am I playing this wrong?
No, leaving the home system is totally optional, but rare resources make things a lot easier. Also, you can build the dyson sphere on another system (where the star luminosity multiplier is greater) to get extra energy.
correct I think i started my home sphere, after visiting one more sun, because i could and it had a deuterium gas giant
you need a ton of plain filter to keep the quantum chip production going
I also had problems with the normal processors :( just never enough of anything! Build MORE is always the answer!
@@JDPlays oh, i didn't know that one was repeatable
@@ElderonAnalas Oil has been a struggle for me too, hence the line of refineries stretching half way around the planet. Early on I found that I had an abundance of refined oil which was hampering hydrogen production. Ended up with about 20 full storage of refined oil. Later on though as I started to produce crystalline titanium and plastic it reversed and I wasn't using enough hydrogen. I ended up replacing my energised carbon power plant with a hydrogen powered one, which is helping at the moment. With stackable storage I am leaning on the side of building up massive reserves as its my first playthrough so not sure what I will need lots of in the future.
Not sure how far through you are just a cautionary tale that sometimes in this game the resource you have too much off can become the one you lack somewhere down the tech tree
@@billjoggs6713 yup I build up 5 stacks of 5 tanks during early game now they are all drained into production and wanting more, was really great full I had lots of em it hurts when you only Have a handful from by production
there is a chart to help plan the amount of buildings to make a balance planet.

Thank you SOOO much !!! Best explanation EVER !!!!!
Now...how to consume the power that is being generated by the sphere?
thanks, great info. Can't wait to get there!
Have fun!
bought this game when it first came out but couldn't make it past red cubes
decided to give it another try recently and just unlocked green cubes, so almost at the end but the Dyson sphere stuff is super confusing
Hi JD Plays and thanks for your great video. I cannot put node around my star because it is said "wrong latitude". Can you explain me why ? Thanks
Jump on my discord and post some screen shots then maybe we can help!
What does 30% satisfaction mean ? On the right side of the Dyson screen?
Hello, how do I speed up the absortions of dyson swarm by the dyson shell please ?
More structure nodes absorb faster, So rather than long straight lines with the structure build lots of little short ones.
Thanks for the help.
Happy to help
I see a Star lumination stat so which stars are best and does it really affect generation potential? ☀️🤔
Additionally have you discovered the potential of a fully completed sphere at maximum versus minimum radius?
higher Star illumination = better
Larger size = more panels = more power
How much power? NO IDEA! ask me in about 300 hours after i build one!
@@JDPlays I expected nothing less as there's no way the JD I've watched would walk away from this game willingly without seeing how far he can go before the game crashes. 😂
@@imblackmagic1209 please explain all the correct physics, to scale, etc this game has.
this is a game. Star Citizen will probably be closer to a real simulation, if it's every completed.
Do the layers interfere with each other's performancem
nope
Can we use asteroids to make Dyson sphere? Like put some kind of futuristic solar panel’s on them while they circle a planet?
what is the point of the different layers? can you fill in multiple layers and get power from each? do the different color starts give you different power levels?
Do inner layers decrease the efficiency of outer layer's? Like if I build a full sphere on the inner layer will the outer layer's still function?
Nope build ALL the layers Sunlight is magical and passes from one layer to the next, and even onto planets :)
So if you were to imagine the "endgame" you need to produce universe matrix, small carrier rockets, and sails indefinitely?
Is it just a constant race to attain more power generation ability?
really interesting and helpful thanks :)
can the dyson sphere take in sails from already existing sails in orbit as a swarm or do they all need to be shot out brand new
it sucks up sails starting with the oldest
@@JDPlays thanks
Hey Hey THX for the Infors
How does one automate the loading of rockets into the launchers?
nvm im an idjit
we all have those moments....
How do you actually gather the energy from it ?
Check the playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLnIE0W-m629dUd5lfNF2EQEx6eskER_Gm.html
So the only reason to get dyson sphere over the swarm is that sphere is permanent right?
Im having a problem where it wont let me place any new nodes it just says deployment conflict. i cant find any info on what im doing wrong. any ideas ?
Place them further away
They are at maximum length.
id suggest joining our discord and posting some screen shots, (link is in video description) its really had to tell whats wrong with words only
@@JDPlays thank you I will do
thank you so much keep it up
You keep saying the shape is purely cosmetic but cant the radius affect if you get energy/shoot parts all day or half day.
I need to find definitive info before I burn more time into completing it, kinda don't wanna waste time on parts that depreciate.
sails on the sphere are permanent.
@@jetah50 Thanks!
loved this!!!!!
Just found your content, do you have a follow along? From beginning to now?
I saw this video at the wrong time :( I started my dyson sphere but I didn't know the best way to do it so I put the nodes as close as possible to each other, that means that I need a lot of resources for each node and have a lot of nodes, idk if keep going with that, it consumes a lot of resources, believe me, a lot, I just have 1 latitud lvl in the tecnologie and I need to launch almost 60k rockets to the dyson sphere, idk what to do, should I create another dyson sphere and remove everything from this one and create another one? Or just delete some nodes?
You can leave what you have there already, or delete any not built nodes and just make another sphere around/inside the first sphere i think my current sphere is 3 layers deep now
@@JDPlays Alright, I'll do that, I'm so upset cuz of that, I wasted 23k launches on that sphere, that's a lot of resources
Help me pleeeese!!! I have too much hydrogen (from yellow science)!!! I have no idea how to use it. Red science is perfectly balanced, so I can't use it there. Power is doing amazing so I can't burn it (I can but it's painfully slow). I have 6.25 hydrogen per second that I need to get rid of. The way I am using it right now is fuel for myself. It's not good!
Throw it into a thermal power plant or keep tanking it up. your going to need a metric shit load of hydrogen for Deuterium and Casmir Crystals.
Oh, and your power, is never amazing or never enough i should say. If your not making a constant 500-1000 MW without solar cells, then your not making enough energy.
1. Burn
2. Deuterium
3. Storage
4. turn off cracking
5. delete storage, then rebuild it, instantly empties storage!
Anybody knows what happens to solar panels on planets if we cover the star with a complete Dyson Sphere?
still works. light passes through the sphere, as mentioned toward the top.
If only my PC could run this game properly. When I launch looks like my gpu's are going to start flying from so much use...
What gpu you have? Game is really well optimized
anyone knows if its possible to copy paste the dyson shell for different sun systems?
Why isnt there like actual sandbox mode with no limits like no costs
Why do you have 20 orbits for your Dyson sphere?
I think those are all his set up/potential swarm orbits
My head hurts, the game.
thanks for the help, finally this old girl knows what to do :)
in sulfer acid need stone ore
How to mine the sun it showes stuff
Acid need stone right '_'?
right.... for umm.... reasons....
the question still remains... why?
does anyone know how to change the research queue?
I think it's right-click on the icons to remove them from the queue. (You can also pause/resume the queue if you need to reduce power consumption, etc. in the early game.)
Good video if you don't mind watching a ton of ads
