  • This year marks the 60th anniversary of Gibson’s iconic SG, and though it experienced slightly awkward & laboured beginnings, it went on to prove itself as the company’s true bastion of rock! Gibson’s winning formula of recreating its heritage models with incredible detail flourishes here, with the introduction of the company’s greatest departure in the solid-body guitar game, ever. The SG’s legacy is etched in to the minds of guitar fans all over the world, and these anniversary models, now featuring a ‘Custom’ variant for the first time, does that legacy justice.
We wanted to take the opportunity to explore the unique properties of this classic design, discussing the nuances that set the SG apart as a seminal instrument in its own right, as well as talking through some of the elements that uniquely define this specific anniversary model.
Jack explains how this guitar could well be the turning point for any double-cut sceptics, and offers up a new perspective on classic Gibson tone, that only the SG can deliver!
Most importantly, what do YOU think of the SG? Is it a true classic, as proposed here, or do you simply consider it the Les Paul’s anaemic cousin? Let us know in the comments below!

Getting a Gibson SG Standard stopped my quest for guitars completely, so it is kind of sad…just as getting a Marshall Bluesbreaker stopped my quest for amps…all I have left is the pedal-rabbithole ;-) Thanks for a great channel.

SGs are my favorite Gibsons. A beautiful design, and they don’t kill my back like a Les Paul does. I’ve had several SGs over the years-I still have a 2002 SG Supreme. Killer guitar.

I have a dozen SGs. Junior, Special, Standard, Deluxe, Custom, Select, Modern, Supreme. I also have a half dozen Les Pauls. The SG has been my go to for 25 years. Prior to discovering the SG I was a Flying V and Explorer guy. I don't have any of those anymore. There is nothing that you can't do with an SG. Best Gibson ever for rock and blues music.

'64 when i was a kid in '75. ok a $150 'rebuild' with the neck set wrong.
Hard to play but sounded killer and with the p u covers off, looked just like Blair Thornton's from BTO's "Not Fragile".
    Should have fixed it.
    Now, second G400. 2 Vs, a 'paul, jr, a tele, 3 s types, ...
for what i love to play, the SG (yes, its on the truss rod cover) is my all around fave. ha, its on a guitar stand now. Worked it up this weekend.

I am a relatively new convert to SG’s. I first tried an Epiphone SG and was surprised at how much I enjoyed playing it. I now have a lefty Gibson USA SG ‘61 in Cherry with Humbuckers, and a lefty Gibson USA in Pelham Blue (that I bought from Peach) with P90s and a wraparound Bridge. I wonder if one day I will ever find a lefty SG with mini-Humbuckers.

Yes, I guess I am guilty of having considered the SG as a bit of a poor man's Les Paul for while, the same way I was considering the Telecaster as a poor man's Stratocaster. But I finally saw the light in both cases and Jack's description of the differences, as far as the SG is concerned, is exactly what I found.

    • @J.C...
      @J.C... ปีที่แล้ว

Except there nothing poor about them. They're just as much as a Les Paul.
Considering the fact that Gibson sold over 6k SG's in 1961 vs 500 Les Pauls in 1960, 500 in 1959, and about 500 in 1958, I'd say they were quite popular. It's also why Gibson says it's their best selling guitar of all-time. In the first 3 years of production, they averaged around 6k SG's sold each year. 18k+ SG's in 3 years vs 1500 Les Pauls in the 3 years prior. That's right. Over Eighteen THOUSAND SG's were sold vs around Fifteen HUNDRED Les Pauls in a comparable 3 yr period.
The SG will always be Gibsons #1 guitar and its not because it's a "cheap version of a Les Paul". They're totally different guitars. Same goes for Strat/Tele. A Tele isn't a cheap Strat. It's just a different model. Teles came out before Strats anyway so that explanation doesn't stick. They werent made as "cheap versions of a Strat" because Strats didn't exist when they were developed.
It's insane how many people make up stuff like that and think it's actual history rather than details they made up.

These are really beautiful guitars. Love that design. Including the really beautiful looking vibrato unit. But does that vibrato unit work? Work well, I mean? I don't think so, it is apparently more intended for decoration, he hasn't used it once in the Demo. That could be a reason why this Design didn't catch on so well with guitar players like its LP cousin or the Strat.

    • @maxpeck4154

Excellent video! However, I must point out that the often told story about Les Paul not liking the look of the SG is totally erroneous. The real reason why his name was removed from the SG is simply that his contract with Gibson had ended. He was also going through a divorce with Mary Ford at the time, and Les did not want to share the revenue he was receiving from Gibson with her. That is the simple truth. If you doubt my words, just ask Gibson yourself.

Les Paul not liking the new “Les Paul” model and demanding Gibson take his name off it is a bit of a myth. Both Les and Ted McCarty wrote that the change coincided with Les and Mary Ford going through their divorce. Les terminated many of his contracts, including the one with Gibson to keep the proceeds out of the divorce settlement. Les and Mary performed and were photographed with SG style Les Paul guitars usually white two pickup customs. The cover photo of the 1968 album “Les Paul Now” was just such a guitar including the engraving “Les Paul Custom” on the pickguard between the end of the fretboard and the neck pickup. That was the same year that Gibson brought the original single cutaway Les Paul back to production with a new contract with Les.
