You can get that tone out of a 100$ hock shop guitar and a Boss Metal Zone pedal...buying a 2000$ guitar for chainsaw metal is like mixing a 500$ bottle of scotch with diet coke
Kris (before starting free for all tones): “Let us know who won.” Me (starts typing): “Sorry Kris. Love your sound, but G’s just-“ Kris starts playing. Me: “Gimme a sec, have some text to erase.” GREAT video guys. Adored this.
Derek trucks is incredible emotion, speed and just all round wow factor ! Thanks guys !! Kris always has so much zing on his cleans sounds awesome Guillaume loves trem but with the slide Guys please do not ask me to choose
My favorite tone is when I stop playing. My Gibson Iommi Monkey sounds exquisite when I stop playing compared to the Epi SG w/Kill Pot ($179). Truthfully, you guys ever hear Holdsworth (SG player of course) ripping arpeggios on Soft Machine's Bundles in the 70s? Yeesh! THAT'S some slick SG tone !!!! 🎸
Today my high E string broke 😅. It was EXL 120 stock strings on guitar, from thomann :D. Hahaha. But it's ok. I ordered Elixir Nanoweb 9 42 now :P from thomann. :P and watched how to change on floyd rose on Kris's video 😅. Thank you!
Love the sg . Dont like the new vibrato, bought a new one three years ago.Have had more than seven or eight, due to theft. Been retired for over 20 years,Made a great life and career, thanks gibson SG! I couldnt done it without the SG. My les paul is too heavy,so is the AK 47,so I have a M1!
Kris, follow your heart and get an sg . I’ve got one and it’s pretty much my dream guitar . I’d like to throw a duesenburg les trem on it so I can wiggle stick but they in my humble opinion are the most under rated guitar ever .
I will. I mean I will have to follow my heart at one point, you're absolutely right. Even if I can't justify getting even more guitars... Haha! Cheers //Kris
Don't want to play the smartass here and correct you guys... but anyway ^^: The SG is actually Gibson's best selling guitar of all time ;) Even though some think it's the Les Paul
I've heard that, yeah. Hard to believe though, since it feels like out of 10 Gibson players 7-8 will show up with a Les Paul. 😆 That being said, the SG was always in production since 61 (when they stopped making LPs for many years) and a few HUGE players and movies made a lot of people wanna have an SG. Also, it's more affordable than LPs which is a big factor too. What really matters is that SGs are awesome and beloved for a very good reason. Cheers //Kris
I’m not really sure Derek Trucks has the best “sg tone” at all. I wouldn’t even say he has what would be considered an sg tone. I absolutely agree he is amazing and is the best current player that uses an sg but i wouldn’t say his tone is anything like a stereotypical sg tone at all. I’m pretty sure he plays one because of the wide flat fretboard being predominantly a slide player. And by predominately I mean he has a slide on one of his fingers for 9 out of 10 songs not that he’s playing slide constantly. Anyway, his tone is great but I wouldn’t say it’s an sg tone, nor would I say his tone is hard to achieve (equipment wise). He plays modern gear pretty much straight into an amp. His tone isn’t an sg tone his tone is Derek Trucks tone. When I think of sg tone I don’t even think woman tone even tho that’s when Clapton first started experimenting with it was with an sg. The stereotypical sg sound is angus young. I don’t think he’s particularly brilliant but that is an SG’s tone. This was more of a who are the best players to employ an sg as their main guitar show
Guillaume all the way for me, especially the clean and higher gain tones. I think it mostly comes down to the PRS can though ;) so much punch and clearness!
Gibson did a run from 86-89 of what they called “62 reissues” these predate the actual custom shop but were Gibson’s first attempt at “prehistoric” guitars. They have never reissued the 62’ since. If you get an 86 or 87 these should still have Tim Shaw Humbuckers in them. I will tell you this, if you don’t mind a flat thin neck than these guitars absolutely blow the new 61 CA reissues out of the water. I have both and It’s not even close. And I’ve played others too and there’s no comparison. The only issue is the neck is very flat and thin and tends to cramp my hands on a longer gig. But on a one off these things are absolute monsters and a hidden gem in Gibson’s line that you can still pickup relatively affordably
@6:00 - Was this a clean tone? - Sounds like overdrive and harmonic tremolo. Sounds great but not like Chris's earlier. Plus both have some reverb so not really clean. I know you are showing off the guitars but a simple clean tone followed by everything else would be better - plus details of what the FX are so people could budget for these if they are going for that particular tone.
Guillaume: *buys a SG* *John Mayer phase stops* *Derek Trucks phase starts* It's fun and bit brutal to see you guys getting infected with new guitars and wait who will get "down with the sickness" *wraaah* and buys it first
Zappa on his SG 😜
Frank Marino is THE SG slinger 🤘🏻
My favorite SG tone is actually John Mayer "Friends Lovers or Nothing" from Battle Studies. Super underrated song🙂
Loved Guillaume's Ariel Posen piece for crunch. Lovely tones by both!
Thank you so much man! Glad you liked it //G
You guys just said what I know of SG's and Tele's. They are the work-horse of guitars
Great video, awesome sound. What about another classic one? The 1958 Gibson Flying V! Let‘s go guys!!
When i think of the SG, i think of...Angus. But there's also Jimi, Duane, and Derek among others.
Edit: Can't forget Santana.
Yes! 🙌
And Tony Iommi
The best SG tone has to be Toni Iommi 🤘
I have to agree with that. 🙌 //Kris
Kris' riff and gain sound at 15:26 are the winner for me!
🤘😝 Thanks buddy! //Kris
You can get that tone out of a 100$ hock shop guitar and a Boss Metal Zone pedal...buying a 2000$ guitar for chainsaw metal is like mixing a 500$ bottle of scotch with diet coke
@@northernblue8921 , I wouldn't go that far but I was surprised at how bright and brittle it was.

Me: “Gimme a sec, have some text to erase.”
GREAT video guys. Adored this.
Luv ya dude, much appreciated! 🙌 That dotted 8th thingy was so much fun playing. //Kris
Derek trucks is incredible emotion, speed and just all round wow factor !
Thanks guys !! Kris always has so much zing on his cleans sounds awesome
Guillaume loves trem but with the slide
Guys please do not ask me to choose
You know me man, I'm all about the zing. 😅 Thanks for watching Paul and yeah, we're definitely fine with a tie. //Kris
Always a great pleasure to listen to you. Difficult to say which one sounds best, in any case the two proposals are top. Thanks
Sorry but the Harley Benton DC-60 Junior Polaris White, is the dream guitar come true.
Kris clean and crunch were so good

Pete Townsend hands down had the best SG tone. Check out The Who's rendition of Sparks at the Woodstock festival.

Saw Tedeschi Trucks live again last night. That SG tone was incredible!
Beautiful video…huge sounding guitars and wonderful human being behind them…greetings from Morocco 😇🤙🏼
Thanks so much Sasa! Cheers //Kris
Nice tones from both guitars. Cheers guys!🤘
Cheers man, thanks a lot! //Kris
i 1000% agree with the expressions on Kris's face,...goddamn G!!! those tones!!! sheesh, im impressed 🤘
Kris,
Love my 61 reissue. SG is just rock guitar 🎸.
Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush, John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Terry Kath of Chicago
What was your open tuning? E?
Yep open E tuning :) //G
I have Standard Gibson SG, a very good guitar
SG straight into Dalas Solo Boost and than in a 100 w Plexi🤘😉😜
Yup! Got one! But it's in my budget Origin 20H.
Kris, follow your heart and get an sg . I’ve got one and it’s pretty much my dream guitar . I’d like to throw a duesenburg les trem on it so I can wiggle stick but they in my humble opinion are the most under rated guitar ever .

@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses having watched your channel for a while I think an sg would be an amazing fit for you…. Imagine one with p90s ;)
What guitar Zac Wylde plays? Isn't it SG?

Absolutely, that cab really shined that day ! Thank you though I'll still take the compliment haha! //G
Would love to have heard P90’s in a SG.
Now we need Flying V vs Explorer 😎
Chris won this round. But the BEST SG tone in the world is Mr. Tony Iommi.
G don’t need no stinking tone knob to beat Kris, just a nice slide. 😂
That tone knob trick really was G's party trick though... Haha! Cheers buddy //Kris
My favorite SG tone is system of a down
I cannot bring myself to like fuzz. To me, it just sounds broken and unpleasant.

Personally I preferred Guillaume's tone because, well slide and neck pickup "always and forever"
Guillaume took this one, but I’d buy the one Kris picked.
anyhoo
Loved the sound of Guillaume
I'm not crying. I'm not. Okay? 😆
//Kris
I’m torn, both of guys sounded killer. I’d just give it a “tie.”
