  • We are proud to introduce the latest from the Gibson Custom Shop: the 60th Anniversary 1961 Les Paul SG Standard and Custom. (Oh, and do you know what "SG" stands for? Let us know in the comments below!)
1961 brought some big changes to the Gibson Les Paul™; most notably a sleek, all-new, double-cutaway, all-mahogany body design that would later be renamed the SG™. The now iconic designs were considered bold for the time, but then Gibson president, Ted McCarty, felt the market demanded new and innovative designs.
These Gibson Custom Shop models replicate the first Les Paul SG Custom and Standard, complete with Custom-style cosmetics, Sideways Vibrola™, a side-pull action vibrato that is similar to those found on models from the early 1960s. It also has a bound Authentic '61 Thin Profile mahogany neck, Grover® tuners, an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic™ bridge, Custombucker pickups, CTS® vintage-taper pots, and Black Beauty capacitors.

LP, Explorer, Flying V have a relevant body thickness, and SG is the only one that gives you that Gibson feeling in slim body. Unique Gibson feature that I love. You can’t switch to another Gibson and find the same feeling of an SG. Loved one.

Not true. Gibson Les Paul lite…. They came out in the 80s. They still make them today, the Les Paul classic lite. It’s a Gibson Les Paul, but as thin as a Gibson SG.

I agree!!! I play LPs for a long time, and I still own one, and I also played an explorer for quite a while, and I still own it, but once I started playing an SG, it ruined me 😂 I have to force myself to play my LP and my Explorer, but I never have to force myself to play my SG, it has the light weight feel, and that gritty grunt, and I can access the upper register notes a lot easier….. I can’t part with my LP and Explorer, but they definitely don’t get played that often compared to my SG that literally gets played everyday!

I love my SG. I bought it almost as a backup to my Explorer, which I thought would be my primary. After playing the SG, I fell in love with it, and find that it's more tonally versatile than my Explorer. Plus it's a lot lighter, which is great when you are playing for a while with it strapped over your shoulder.
These new reissues look beautiful, and I'm sure they sound just as good.

One thing, if I may, that you guys still don’t quite get right on these custom shop models is the way the bevels thin out into the horn tips. On every vintage early 60s SG I’ve ever put my hands on, the horns are tapered and almost “rounded” and thinner at the tips. On these you guys still have “wide” horn tips. Props on getting the pick guard size right for these though! Love Gibson, love SGs, just my 2 cents.

The 2000 SG standard has a neck tenon much longer and stronger. You could use it for a baseball bat. All in all SG's won't stand up to a lot of mishandling, but find me a cooler looking, better sounding guitar and I'll buy it.

Serious question, since they are talking about improving and using modern technology to reproduce the SG. I know they are trying to replicate different year model SG's from the 60's, but why the variation in neck pockets, heels, and tenons in the SG line up? If you were going to improve the product, why not just use the best one for all models? Then use the period correct pickups, pick guards, finishes, knobs, & etc to differentiate? Else why are we trying to recreate it each and every year if they got it right back in the 60's? Please don't take my comment wrong, I really do want an SG, but this is what goes through my mind when looking at the current SG line-up.

  • @markvincent522
    @markvincent522 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have the Custom version of one of these and it's easily the nicest guitar I've ever owned, and one of the nicest I've ever had a chance to play. It was worth every cent because you can't find guitars that feel, sound, and play as well as Gibson Custom Shops. I'm not a collector--I'm going to play mine until the damn glue dissolves. It will be checked and dinged and refretted. And know what? I don't have to worry about losing a considerable amount of value when I get it refretted. I'm sorry, but Custom Shops are not far off from vintage guitars in terms of feel and sound without the manufactured cork-sniffery of vintage guitars. Gibson manages to make killer guitars without using garage hardware with "F" logos on it and polyester finishes, too.

I'll bet there isn't more than $300 in actual materials used in the making of one of these. Add in a generous $1000/piece for labor and the rest is profit. It's a healthy profit.

I think. Custombuckers are fantastic pickups and Burstbuckers and 57 classics as well but they are not exact paf copies they are heavily influenced by the paf but all of those pickups are very much their own thing. They are more paf style pickups then actual paf clones. I own guitars with all of Gibsons paf style pickups but there are aftermarket pickups that come closer to the true paf sound . I find it funny that in every other aspect of historic recreations they go out of their way to be as accurate as possible but yet the pickups don't seem to get the same effort . The pickups are arguably the most important component..

All through my teens and 20’s, I never noticed that the SG body shape was asymmetrical. I thought they were symmetrical and the cutaways were intentionally designed to look like devil horns. Considering some of its famous users, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, it’s not much of a stretch, and I can’t be the only one who thought that.

The first SG I ever saw was a brand-new white Custom at Sherman Clay Music in San Francisco, about 1964. It was in a glass display case, and they wouldn’t let me play it, as it was a special order for somebody. I thought it was the most beautiful guitar I’d ever seen, and I never made the “devil” association. Maybe because it was white! The SG, in whatever color, is one of the classiest guitar designs anyone’s ever come up with. I knew I’d never be able to afford a Custom-they were something like $425 back then-but I wound up getting a new Standard in ‘67. Seems like most of the rock guitarists in San Francisco were using them at that time. John Cipollina, Jerry Garcia, Sam Andrew, James Gurley, Barry Melton...and me!

I just bought a 2016 Gibson custom shop Standard Historic SG Standard miestro vibrola.Supposed to be a 1961?? But the specs lean closer to mid 60’s? MIESTRO, but single ring Klusons ,..so early 60’s?
The guitar seems to have very little pressure on the bridge saddles, is this normal? Also the guitar has Custom Buckers, and in the neck position, i cant, seem to get that snappy Neck position sound, like my R9 R0 or Strats. is probally the best description of the sound im describing. The SG has a darker muffled sound in the neck, is that normal for the SG?

Furthermore, nobody had even heard of Rosetta Tharpe til a year or so ago and she didn't give anywhere near the exposure to the SG Custom that Mary Ford did. What a screw up, Gibson. You guys finally got the body bevels and everything else right, but blew it with the rosewood fingerboard. I mean, did someone forget that the SG Custom is supposed to be made with an ebony fingerboard or what?
