Years of playing and yet this is the one moment that has changed my perspective on bowing. The subtle changes and motions are what makes all the difference for me now. Thank you so much
Yes, ma'am, this "has been a very enlightening and interesting" vid. I've always known there was more to bowing than what I was taught as a child (never had private lessons on violin). I currently play for a church orchestra, and these instructs are gonna be so very helpful. Speaking of private lessons, I am taking drum lessons, and the talk of all that finger flexibility and use, reminds me of what my instructor is teaching me with the drum sticks. Thanks. Kevin.
I did not know that there could be someone that was able to deliver such a hight level of professionalism until then. I got to say:"Chapeau bas !" 👏🏻 And of course Thank you.
Great camera shots on all the slo mo shots, Beth! Thanks. You are the one that finally got through to me about the bow stroke. When you said it was a 'reach', that did it!
I have been an amateur cellist for the past 30 years or so, and have returned to the violin, having played in my youth. I cannot thank you enough for your immensely informative videos. They are helping me in so many ways along with the stuff I get weekly from my teacher. So a very big Thanks for sharing this incredible wisdom.
I"ve seen some pretty crazy looking bow holds as well. It only REALLY matters if you are playing classical violin literature where the kind of articulation requires super control of the bow. Not to disparage fiddle-style at all, but there is more leeway with the bow hold.
Love your violin teaching videos and Violinlab.com. My pinky finger keeps on flying off on the downstroke of my bow. I have a hard time keeping my bowhand in the right place all of the time. Arm gets tired. I am committed to this so much.
I can not thank you enough for the content you have provided. You are beautiful, wise and full of high class perfect curiculum. I can't wait to join your website and use it all over the world as I travel. You are a goddess to teaching and video editing simplifying complex/intricate technics. My hat is off to you and I am forever grateful ❤
Great teaching! As beginner it was very difficult for me to handle the fingers and bow as it should be. But work on it. Gradually it is getting better.
muchas gracias por información, quisiera sugerirte por favor que siguieras traduciendo al español tus vídeos y ojala los antiguos también, es que en este idioma son muy pocos los vídeos que se encuentran con tu nivel y tu excelente manera de explicar :)
Fascinating analysis and explanation of why the fingers and hand do what they do... Will share with the occupational therapist who is helping me with a right hand ligament injury. (Tip of "mildly disjointed" index finger wants to touch tip of ring finger when I close my hand; middle finger wants to be on top or under ring finger. The most pinching strength is between thumb and ring middle finger supported by ring finger. Have many strengthening exercises and prognosis of a year recovery, complicated by some arthritis in index knuckle before the crushing injury.)
EXCELENTE VIDEO... TUS VIDEOS SON MUY BUENOS.. DEBERIAS DE INTENTAR TRADUCIRLOS AL ESPAÑOL PARA PODER COMPRENDERLOS TODOS.. de verdad te felicito por tu iniciativa
thank you very much I studied violin two years but quit because the teacher told me that the right hand should be firm and should not move his fingers, had to hold strong fingers on the bow, but I felt it was better to have flexibility in the fingers and wrist. but always corrected me and ended tense .... more than 5 months ago I've seen your videos and also the Proferssorv videos and learned more than two years in school .....
PROFESSOR COULD YOU PUT SUBTITLES IN SPANISH IN YOUR ANOTHER VIDEOS PLEASE???? I COULD LEARN MUCH BETTER IF YOU PUT SUBTITLES IN THE ANOTHER VIDEOS. YOU ARE AN EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. GOD BLESS YOU
I don't have any experience with this style of bow grip. Is this the Russian style? If it's working for you then that's great. My problem with the thumb across from 3rd finger is that the hand isn't as balanced, and there's less leverage with the index finger for sustaining forte dynamics at the tip.
I've been looking everywhere in TH-cam for a video where I can see the application of finger movement in the string change and finally found it! Thanks so much! Do you happen to have another video specific for that? Great job :)
muito bom seus videos e ainda mais agora com legenda em português ..... você mora onde? sou do Brasil toco na Igreja mais em nível inicial seus videos estão me ajudando muito

teacher I am from Brazil and I have accompanied your videos, they are excellent ... more I study viola de arco Would you have any channel to indicate me about viola class? thank you so much!
Great video!! Thank you so much! How do you create clean and pure sounds when you change bows of if you are in a really high position? I have troubles with this especially while playing scales.
Thanks for the lesson. I was wondering what your opinion is on variations to the bow grip. I just started taking private lessons, and my teacher said that I should be making the circle with my thumb and first finger. All of the information about finger motion still applies the hold is just a bit different. I am actually finding it easier to do techniques like spiccoto with this hold. Have you ever suggested and different bow hold to somebody?
No it is not the Russian style. The first finger is across from the thum. Although after working with it for a few weeks, I have moved my first finger up a little bit toward the tip. So now my thumb is not across from any finger. By the way, sorry I did not write back for a few weeks, I have been very busy. I do however have one more question. When doing vibrato, some times my fingers attach to the strings and I can get a nice wide arm vibrato. But some times my fingers and thumb wont stick to
Hi Beth, wondering if you have any advice that could help me. I am a violinist of about three years. I have cerebral Palsy though, which mainly affects my right side. This makes bowing properly quite difficult as I don't have the flexibility in my fingers for subtle changes in the bow. Is there a way I could possibly work around that? Also what specifically is the role of the wrist when bowing? I can push my arm out, but it takes a little while for my wrist to follow suit. Is that something I just have to spend most of my violin career (hopefully) strengthening? Love your videos btw. P.s, I do have a teacher, just wanted another opinion!
the neck. Even though my first finger joint is bending my fingers end up sliding on the streings. I can still do a very small wrist vibrato but do you know of a good way to get your fingers to stick to the srings?
I know of no other instrument that involves so many subtle mechanics of plating. Oboe is a tough one but once you know how to move air correctly (may take the whole life though) the rest is finger wiggling but violin...
I appreciate your pace is slow enough to grasp. But it would if you had the student practice what you just demonstrated before going on to the next clip.
This lesson is great, as usual, but the captions are terrible. A person who is hard of hearing would have a hard time. The French captions on a previous lesson were much better.
Best teacher of violin on youtube.

You are the best violin teacher I’ve ever seen.

This helped me enormously. I was struggling with bow hold since years but now I seem to come over it. Thanks for all the effort for helping us.

Superb. Thank you.
really helpful, thank you.
Madam I impressed your teaching but I want English subtitles
very good.
That's the main reason we need TH-cam to make people able to add a 100000 likes in one video.
That's just like giving everyone infinite money, it breaks the economy, that just makes likes worth less
Szkoda, że wcześniej nie znałam tego kanału, fantastico, now I can help my daughter;)
Great video!! Thank you so much!
