Simple put: this is GENIOUS content. You should have at least 1 Million subscribers. This is so valuable and seldom teached! Every teacher should teach this (everything you teach about holding the bow, bow arm mechanics and your gourgeous analogies) over and over. It would stop thousands of studens quitting too early!
Wow, this was huge for me and it is really counter intuitive because if you have been playing for awhile you know that the awful surface sound is not what you want because there is not enough weight on the string we/I tend to press to hard. This ends up choking the sound off because of the tension in the hand/fingers. What happens if you really relax that hand is you get the sound you are wanting and an effortless stroke. Wow is all can say. THANK YOU
If the music is not written for violin, then you have to decide bowing and bow direction for yourself. However, if it is written expressly for violin, then there are little symbols that represent the down and the up bow. They're not all marked, only where it is necessary.
Deus a abençoe grandemente.
I find it more difficult to get the violin perfectly in tune with the fine tuners, but most professionals use one for the E string. Since the string is so thin, the distance for tuning the peg is smaller and makes it much more difficult. But the tuners are ok on all strings if the pegs don't turn or stick well.
Gostei da cordinha no pulso da marionete. Vou praticar isso, pois quando percebo já estou tocando em cima das cores na corda,ou no braço do violino. A liga com dois lápis que eu vi em outro canal também está sendo muito útil. Obrigada!
Thanks so much for posting! I have been playing a an amatuer for a while and this is a problem that keeps coming back. It had been frustrating because I couldn't figure out what was killing my tone. Thanks!
Thank you for your amazing content!, I am learning violin for my own and I choose you like a teacher, you are so elegant and professional. You are an inspiration. . . I have a question, what should I do, if my pinky tends to be straight? XD
Hi. This is a good video. I'm 49 and I just started playing again and I'm working on the Bach Sonatas and Partitas. My bow arm shoulder had some issue (lots o' pain) from type 2 diabetes. This was in mid-December and I'm still having pain. I started lessons in January first week. My teacher doesn't seem to care about the fact that my first two lessons have been painful. He has me playing open strings each practice and the square position (bow tip) and triangle (near frog). Thoughts?
Is the hair of the bow supposed to remain in contact with back of the thumb throughout the entire stroke, or should the hair ever contact the back of the thumb? How far should the hair be from the thumb? Also, more importantly, should the back of the thumb move further away from the hair as the downstroke progresses in order to keep the correct angle/same angle of the hair to the strings? Or should the distance from the back of the thumb to the hair remain constant throughout the stroke?
I teach flexing the fingers in a very similar manner you do (I think it's in Simon Fischer's book?) Something I struggle with is many students let the bow spin around in their hand with their thumb stiff and straight instead of letting the fingers give and keeping a good bow hold. I think they struggle with letting the middle finger wrap around the stick to make room so at best they just stick their pointer finger out. Do you have any tips for the teacher side for helping students avoid this problem? When I try to get them to fix the thumb before teaching the finger flex, they just clench the bow in a death grip.
I have short arms. When it reaches the tip of the bow, I felt that my arm isn't long enough to go all the way down. Sometimes I have to lift my pinky in order to do so. Is it a bad practice?
My teacher constantly tells me to relax my arm and my wrist so I "slide" the bow properly, the thing is, I find it completely impossible to hold the bow without tensing my arm, what can I do to relax it? like, to practice relaxing it?
recently I've been feeling my pinky a bit numb, and my conclusion is that I may have a pinched ulnar nerve. I know you are not a doctor, but do you think this has something to do with my playing, or if its is simply something I may have gotten for working on the computer for too long. I actually feel it less while I'm playing than when I'm not. Do you think I should take a break from practicing, or should I just try different physio-therapies while still keeping my practice routine?
Hia. This may seem a daft questionbut how do you know in a song whether you go up or down bow. Often i find music with no signs is there a rule or some pattern?
Hello, I'm a beginner and have been playing for just about a month now. I have a problem with bringing my right shoulder out forward and up, leading to a lot of tension and bad tone. I believe it might have to do with the angle at which I held my violin, which I recently changed to around 10:30 position. Yet, I am still struggling to relax the shoulder. Do you have any recommendations to remedy this? Thanks!
I realize you may not see this, being an older video you might not see this however. I was wondering if a violinist with very long arms and hands to appear to have a stiff bow arm wrist and hand because less pronation and supination is required to cover the full length of the bow and greater distance is covered with less flexion of the wrist?
Long armed people do have to pronate at the frog more, but do try and pull the violin away from the center of your body a little. It will make more room for the right hand when moving to the frog.
I have a problem that seems to be the opposite of what you're addressing here: my wrist is lifted too high for most of my bow, especially as I bring the bow back down, and I have the problem of tilting my bow too much as I reach the frog (resulting in fewer bow hairs engaging the strings and producing a weaker sound). Got any tips for what I should do as practice?
thank you for this video because one week my bowing was fine then the next week my bowing was really crooked im like ive been practicing this song for awhile why is this happening.
no... your thumb does´t have to be in contact with the hair... sometimes teachers tell you to do it becouse it teaches you to curve it. But if you curve it with out touching the hair it´s better. Hope I was of help.
It's hard to know what to do or advise people about pain. Your teacher is probably concerned about giving you as much info on violin playing as possible for your money. Have you talked to a doctor or better yet, a physical therapist? I have neck pain, and go to PT.
Your lessons are really good, but i'd like to see you playing some good piece, like a Mozart's concerto or Bach sonata, at least some Kreutzer etude... You know, put all your theory together in one good piece ! I only see you playing Suzuki's first book songs...

I picked up the violin today. I was struggling with keeping the bow on track. I can not believe that this content is free

I'm glad to hear that your tone improved, and that you were to find that natural bow arm weight that makes for a warm rich sound!

I have a question, what should I do, if my pinky tends to be straight? XD
Just raise the level of your hand. Bring the base knuckles up higher and it will elevate the pinky.
I thank you for taking the time to answer me....greetings from Caracas Venezuela..

would you tell me if micro tuners afect the tone? why use only one in E string ) why most of profesionals do this?..thank you
I'd like you to make another video about how to make a song :D
