The problem is that when the left hand is not active, your right hand will feel very different. You can spend an hour doing the open strings in this way, but then you will put the left hand back on and old habits will immediately kick in for the right hand. You haven't really "bridged the gap", so the retention isn't there. One modification which remedies this is to mock-finger the notes on the wood off the fingerboard on the E string side, including approximating string changes and shifts, while you play the open strings with the bow as you are doing in the video. This way, the physical sensation is tricking your brain into thinking you are playing normally, so you will hear the actual state of your right hand, and not an artificial state where your brain knows the right hand is isolated. After smoothing the issues with the right hand in this context, you just move the fingers back onto the fingerboard and that's that. There are a number of beautiful little tricks like this that create the MOST DIRECT connection between what you know and what you don't know.
I don't play violin, yet I've been subscribed to this channel for years. I'm a musician (guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin) and I always get insight from every video. Thanks for doing these, they're always valuable across any stringed instrument.
it is for real one the best practicing techniques! The bow pattern is often the cause of trouble, even if we think, it is the left hand! Thanks for this reminding video and as always great content! I love your channel and professional approach! Maybe we can some times do a video together on some topic!
01:45 get your piece. Always good to come back to these things. I did not understand what I was looking yet a year ago. Now I see it's the g-string third finger at first I was like I don't even know what I'm looking at d-string First Finger open A. I was just trying to read those notes and didn't understand about the notation shortcuts hahaha so I put it aside knowing I could come back later and later is now. 04:18 GDAAEE EAADDGG Practice your right hand (bowing) Thank you very much. Not ready for my 2-week membership but so happy I understand what you were saying and ready to practice using this technique. Thank you again
Wonderful to be honest Beth got completely knowledge about music and she is rare person to have all the knowledge I learnt a lot from her. Thank you and God bless you. Love you.
Light bulb moment for me, it hadn't even occurred to me to do this! Thank you, what a great tip! I will definitely be using all the time to improve my playing.
Brilliant technique, but I would also use a metronome to ensure spot on rhythm. There’s a temptation here to clip the dotted crotchet in the new bow rhythm. I have used a similar technique, but without inserting the letters. That will help enormously, so thank you for this.
I love your videos and I found this really helpful! I am going to work on this next time I practice. I would love it if you uploaded more practice videos! I find it challenging to practice, not knowing what to do to perfect my technique, etc. usually I just go straight in to play a piece of music. Thanks again, so happy I found your channel!
Nadia Syed 04 Beth has a great website that you can subscribe to with a great community of adult violin student. I’ve been a member for three years. I suggest you try it out
very helpful technique!!! (the only bad thing is when we have not the bows on the sheet music) but is great for practicing, thank you for the video! :)
As a next step you can put your left hand fingers on your belly as if you were playing the piano and play the notes on your belly while playing the open strings with your bow on the violin :-)
Hello, I learned to play the violin when I was a child and the last concert I played when I decided to give up on my violin was a concert by Vivaldi. I tried recently to play the violin (I am now 72), but I could not remember the notes in each position, unless I stopped playing and started to think about where would that note be, on what string, and on what spot. I would greatly appreciate it if you could suggest something helpful. Thank you. Gabriella

Violin Lab Channel, thank you for your kindest answer, but I did understood completely all what you said in English... a beautiful well pronounced English indeed! :)

As a wind player, I also found this incredibly helpful! Our equivalent of bowing is air flow...
You are a legend, Berry. You play so beautifully that I can listen whole day.
Thank you for your devotion to sharing techniques for learning to play the violin.
Brilliant path to multilayer understanding and mastery. Thank you!

Best channel in the world
Thank from brazil
This is a good realization to improve sight-reading. Love it!
I love this technique, it’s almost like playing with reversed hands. Really shows how the brain can only focus on one thing at a time.
01:45 get your piece.

Muchas gracias. k.anton.Arg.
Go Beth! You're just awesome. And one of my first teaching pedagogues... Love love from LA!
The brain sends the left hand, and the left-hand invites the right hand to come along...
Subscribed. lol
Very innovative, I’ll attempt this on introduction et rondo capriccioso :)
Wow! it is so true - amazing technique! THANK YOU A LOT !

"Do not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing."
I wish you were my teacher
I could advance so much faster
As a next step you can put your left hand fingers on your belly as if you were playing the piano and play the notes on your belly while playing the open strings with your bow on the violin :-)
Is genial.
Thank you so much teacher
Hi Teacher, thanks for this new video. Amazing lessons. Greetings!
Nice tips 😁
My favorite part is at 5:58. "No." Haha.

Your violin has a beautiful tone. Do you have a video of you playing this entire piece?
Thank you. I have a very old 7/8ths instrument. You can here me play more on my website. I also have Shcindler's List videos here on TH-cam.
My teacher told me the same thing. Boy it was difficult to play only with the right hand. thank you for reminding me :o)
Well, it seems that I've finally got an answer to the question "what do the string section of an orchestra plays just before a concert starts". :)
Excelente
Wow, this is such an amazing technique
Love your videos~!!
Hi dear . Please can i have some idea about holding bow and best steps to improve my holding bow
Great . Thanks
Sorry to be pedantic, but you demonstrated the bow without left hand fingers 10 times, and got the rhythm on the second beat correct only twice.
Neil Uk doesn’t matter, the point came across very clearly. Please upload a video of you doing it so we can see.
Can you do a Czardas tutorial please?
makes me part of Spiccato
I've been trying to get in but I can't
Wow mind blown 😳
Is it just me or she looks like Marty's mother in Back to the future 2 ? (in the future)
I play bluegrass. I am interested in this practice technique. What about when you are slurring notes?
You have to still practice the bowings as if you're playing the slurs. That's where you get a different "bow rhythm"

I’ll be trying this on Don Juan :)
amazing video, thank you! keep up.....
Portuguese?????
Not clear because the sound is low
Unless youre Giuliano Carmignola - he leads with the bow first....
best bowing in the entire violin world
Sandy Grungerson Samvel Yervinyan is the best virtuoso violinist in the world.
umm...he's pretty good but everything he plays sounds like klezmer music....certainly doesnt have the bowing of Carmignola
