Will there maybe a new one design mast in general because it is a weak link in the Imocas atm. and, Will she sail back with a new mast or will the boat be shipped back to england?
Well done Pip!, Shackleton would be proud of you! . Q: what are your sleep patterns like on such a long race and how does that impact on fatigue, mood and motivation?
Thankyou for your great coveridge.Im sure Poole, my neck of the woods, will soon be welcoming that fine lady Pip back soon ,she is as tough as teak and a great seaman/lady and charmingly feminine to boot .She had some pretty bad luck and dealt with it superbly.
Vodka and grapefruit juice with a lime every evening (on my cat) to greet you! Another excellent overview, imagery and analysis. Foil-sail….foil-sail…..foil is the winner! Thanks, Andrew
The repairs these sailors are able to make underway, improvising with what is on board, I find remarkable. On the broken foil issue, I wonder how many foils are used for second times around through the southern ocean. If it were me, which of course it never would be, but if it was, I’d want new foils for each attempt.
Question for Pip: She really embraced the positives with her "Slow Boat to Melbourne" videolog and won alot of hearts and minds. She really has an indomitable spirit and we know she is coming back to race again! Is there a silver lining to this - like, Could she see more attention from potential sponsors to help her with her future racing endeavors?
Florian - thank you for the great job that you are doing for all your followers (bringing the VG24 to life). Santa Claus also visited me with a number of the Sea wolves products - thank you for facilitating!!
Hello thanks for the great shows. I have been watching since episode 1. Awesome learning from you. I have an outsider-looking-in comment .. this race is very though on the boats, but it seems that the boats are not made to be tough enough. In other sports, equipment is made to a certain level to best ensure safety, but here the boats are disintegrating under the captains feet. Of course the race is brutal, but from a newbies perspective, the safety and equipment standards need to be increased. Thanks and have a great day.
Question(s) for Pip: what prep needs to be done to Medallia before shipping? Will you do or your team? Is there particular ships that do the shipping or will it be any container ship? And how long will it take to ship Medallia back to Poole?
This may seem a picky comment about your great show, which I’ve been following since the beginning. When a person tips a cup or glass and says cheers, it’s good to make eye contact. 🥂
Note to boat builders for the next VG: design better sail hooks! Seriously, how many skippers dealt with sail hook problems in this race? Feel sad for Yannick but there are too many issues to deal with and you're right about the risk of compounding problems. Better safe than sorry. The one consolation with Isabelle's broken foil is that because of its age, it would need to be replaced at some point in the future. Might as well replace both foils when she returns and upgrade to a newer and faster design. On a completely different tack, Sodebo Ultim is approaching Cape of Good Hope and at the current blistering speed will probably overtake the tail end of the fleet in about a week or so. Unless I am mistaken, the team is doing a mind-melting 34+kts average in the last 24hrs... Nuts!
General question: How much assistance can the land crews give skippers in terms of route choice and tactics? I am well aware that the skippers have pretty much all data at hand, i.e. weather models, wave heights and positions of their rivals.
KING JEAN ❤ 65 years old... Kicking as#*s to foilers and younger sailors. He sailed with French experimental sailing hydrofoil trimaran imagined , in collaboration with the engeneers of avionic engeneers , by the legendery yachtman Éric Tabarly. Like a crew of test pilots in these times. Who knows him says: " he's a Master in " fine tuning "his boat. Like a musician . To get the best out of his instrument. Also a Mac Gyver , on an engeneering level, building his boats, and the most important ; still and always curious . ... Curiosity, the joy to always learn . Thanks Jean ❤
Question for Pip: how has her dismasting and withdrawal affected her motivations as a Vendee Globe competitor? Does she plan to compete again in 4 years and if so what is her core purpose to continue in such a difficult solo endeavor?
Great updates. Thanks 😊. Have a question about the Wave swells. When they are sailing downwind are they generally sailing faster than the swells (waves)?
Florian, why are you always at home? Last time you were often doing the show from the boat or other interesting places like an art gallery..would be cool to see that again!
Going back to Conrad Colman's "Cape Leeuwin" comments, if Maatsuyker Island [with related lighthouse] located 3.5 miles off the south coast of Tasmania is considered the southernmost island of the Australian continental shelf, doesn't he have a point? The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn each represent the most southerly points of their respective continents. Shouldn't Maatsuyker Island be doing the same for Australia?
I tend to agree with you. Also, South Cape in NZ is considered one of the five 'Great Capes' yet it is never noted in this race and not on the official tracking map. Add the fact it is even further south than any point in Australia as well as marking the approximate halfway point in the VG it is really strange it has no mention.
Unfortunately a withdrawal. More boat carnage: rigging, dismasting, sails, foils, delamination, auto pilot steering, rudder sensors. More to come as they traverse north to through the Atlantic. Boris: " Tired of the cold, grey, washing machine, heavy multiple layers". From previous Vendee or Sail Around the World: reduction in the noise levels from the foils/keel/rudder/hydro generators, better noise canceling ppe, location and shape of the foils, bow design, suspension/molded or padded chairs, bedding, more ergonomic cockpits. Just look at the records and performances of the top three boats. Taking nothing away from the skill of their captains. In the years to come, options for heating or warmth - impacts sleep and awareness. Not just gear and layers.
Pip might Join the show tomorrow. So please put your questions for her in the comments below :)
Were there any indications of where the mast failed? Can it be engineered better for next time?
Did one of the running backstay's fail? Has happened to us before with a 7/8 fractional.
Will there maybe a new one design mast in general because it is a weak link in the Imocas atm.
and,
Will she sail back with a new mast or will the boat be shipped back to england?
What would she have done if it happened at point Nemo?
Well done Pip!, Shackleton would be proud of you!

Thanks once again.. Yours is the primary channel I look at for VG news
Yanik is heading to Ushuaia in Argentina rather than Portugal.
Thanks for the clarification
Oh okay, that makes way more sense!!! I was so puzzled...ao far away! THANK YOU!!!

haha, we allready use the most crazy materials and designs made by man :) but this race is tough :)
321 Cheers! Love that opening, great report!
Love these updates!!!
Pip. Will you do a lecture tour in UK. And please give details of your crowdfunding
Florian - thank you for the great job again

very true!
Question for pip, how to get the boat back to UK?
General question:
How much assistance can the land crews give skippers in terms of route choice and tactics?
I am well aware that the skippers have pretty much all data at hand, i.e. weather models, wave heights and positions of their rivals.
Nothing at all. Only communication about solving problems on board is allowed.
Thanks Sir !!!

You mean _Hydroptere?_
Yes
Question for Pip: how has her dismasting and withdrawal affected her motivations as a Vendee Globe competitor? Does she plan to compete again in 4 years and if so what is her core purpose to continue in such a difficult solo endeavor?
Is Isabelle Joshke. thank you for her.
Tnx

I think Yanick Besthaven also lost a thoot (look @6 :35 ) in his battle with the elements 😮...
Living the dream

They locked me up in here, and I'm not allowed outside until the race is over :P

Gidday Florian, you review wind state everyday , but do not mention sea currents , are currents to be considered by sailors in this race ?
sure, although of lesser importance because of their high speeds
Charlie Dalin is now in the lead by 12 miles.
what position was the sailor in who lost autopilot?
11
which foil did she lose?
Starboard foil, same as Sebastien.
Don't want to be too picky, but her name is Joschke.
I have seen one sighting of a school of dolphins - anything else?
there have been more, but they are just hard to film sometimes

Pulling into Portugal? Are you sure?
haha, in my mind Portugal and Argentina are apparently the same :P
Yannick will go on shore in PORTUGAL??? That's still ways away!! Did I misunderstand? Okay, someone said Argentina. Phew, that makes more sense!!
yes it does :)
@SeawolvesTV 🤣
Yannick Bestaven (without H) is not going to Portugal for repairs, but to Ushuaia.
And Yannick Bestaven
Faites un pied de nez à se monde en franchissants la ligne d’arrivée ensemble serait un bel exemple de courage!
Joschke.
