    Nice review. My observations:
    1) obviously too big a trailer for a 1500. People that say otherwise are wrong.
    2) the 8L90 is a heavier duty transmission than the 10L80 per GM. It’s rated to handle more power and was meant as a replacement for the 6L90. It had its fair share of issues early on and I guess that scared GM away from putting it in the HDs. I wish they would have but oh well.
    3) your transmission complaints about needing another gear are really a problem with the 2.7 engine actually. It just doesn’t have enough HP and that’s why you feel you’re running out of steam. The 10 speed wouldn’t help at all with this because the last several gears are very similar if not identical. What would help is more horsepower however.
    4) point 3 is valid for the downshifts too. The 2.7 just doesn’t have enough displacement to give you much engine braking. I had this 8 speed in a truck for 12,000 miles and towed almost the same trailer in a lot worse grades (about half the elevation though) and grade shifting was good with a 5.3.
    Ultimately though like you said if you have a trailer like this, get an HD.

      I disagree that the trailer was too big for a 1500, if you say otherwise, you are wrong. If it's within the GVWR, it's towable It needs a weight distribution hitch to stop swaying.

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@member57 well based off your logic the trailer is too big. It has a 9950 GVWR and that trucks max towing capacity is less than that. Also that trailer has over 1000 pounds of tongue weight, once again exceeding that trucks max rated tongue weight.
      But I would also say your logic is very flawed. Go ahead try towing a 28’ enclosed trailer with a 1500 at highway speeds and you will see. Weight distribution or not. Go watch JBs video where he pulled the 34’ bumper pull toy hauler with his 3500 SRW. He had a little sway. The reason is because you need a dually with a trailer that size. But I’m sure a max tow 1500 truck would be rated to tow the weight of that toy hauler.

      I tow a 25' dual axle 9k travel trailer with a 1500. With a weight distribution hitch it does just fine. My hitch weight capacity with the distribution setup is 1500#. I don't need a penis compensator to tow a trailer.

  • @toddkovalcik332
    @toddkovalcik332 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Considering that the trailer weighs nearly twice the weight of the truck and you were hauling a** for towing that much weight, I think the truck did just fine. As you mentioned, using a weight distribution hitch is a very good idea towing that much weight and would have helped with the swaying. You certainly pushed the truck by accelerating hard and driving pretty fast, which is not how most of us will ever tow, but the 2.7 seemed to do well despite being pushed.

    Soft suspension is taking weight off the front tires so that is why it is swaying. LT tires vs. a P metric tire, a Pmetric will show 100% of the capacity on the side of the tire while a LT tire shows only 75% capacity, We pull a dump trailer and tractor around 9,000 lbs with our 2.7 with no problem. ONe thing we do see vs. a V8 is that you do not have the engine braking out of the 2.7. We prefer to tow with a 2.7 vs. our 5.3.

    I wouldn't get the 5.3 due to all the lifter issues. My brothers High Country with the 6.2L is pretty awesome, gets excellent MPG with lot's of power. I bought new 1500's in 91, 95, 98, 2001 with the 5.3l. Had to work hard towing a car hauler and weren't stabile. In 2015, I went to a GMC 2500 with the Duramax and that had nothing but engine and transmission problems. In 2014, I went to RAM 2500 with Cummins. I have owned this truck and powerplant for years. I have towed max a lot through hills and mountains.
    This engine hates ethanol fuel , so don't run it and is a totally different truck using premium.
    If you are towing with this engine, make sure to run it out of lower octane gas and fill it up with premium. Run it on premium for at least 100 miles before towing so it can learn and self tune. When you run premium and tow you get a lot more power out of the engine.
    It is good at adapting to the fuel you are running but you do lose a little mpg and power running lower grade fuel.
    Again, I would warn against running ethanol gas of any grade in this truck.
    I run a stripped down custom Silverado in the most basic pkg but have the double cab with 6.5 foot bed. Mine has the brake controller built in. It tows better than some of my older V8 s.

Towing maxed out in a mid sized you do feel the sway but you just keep it bellow 60mph and use common sense. Also all pickups sold in Europe come with 2L I4 turbo diesel engines which I would take any day over that 2.7L.

      I have certainly towed with both, and I far prefer an HD to tow with for a trailer this size/weight range as opposed to a half-ton with a short bed. Not that it can't be done safely (mostly) with a half-ton, but I have had far less white-knuckle time towing with an HD as compared to a half-ton.

      Towing above 75% rated capacity is a lot more tiring. Anyone who is towing that much more than three or four times a year should move to a larger truck. It's worth it for the extra safety margin alone. Add in the fact that the HD truck will take the wear and tear a lot better than a half ton. Half tons are not sprung for comfortably towing more than 6,500 to 7,000 lbs.

    It's not that it's a 4 cylinder that it only has so much acceleration on tap fully loaded - it's the HP. It can tow that max, that doesn't mean it's going to be the best for a 9k trailer. Anybody towing that much regularly is going to want an HD.

  • @mikenb11_51

    Surprisingly good fuel economy! It would be interesting to see how much better that load would pull with an equalizer hitch, or other high-quality weight distribution/anti-sway hitch. I agree with you for sure though, no way I want to tow a 9,000 lb trailer of that length without an HD, or at least a standard bed 1500.

    I own one of these.. The problem with this setup is this is such a long stroke motor that it falls on its face above 4500RPM. They need to tune the trans to shift sooner with high and wide open throttle. When you back off the throttle to shift sooner it gets back in the boost and pulls much harder. Anything above 4500rpm is useless. It is designed to perform like a diesel.

    Judging by the way you're spinning the tires taking off gm must not be lying the about the 430 ft lb of torque between 1,500 and 4,000 RPMs and why does it need a downshift if you have that much torque in that power band it has 30 less foot pounds and the 6.2 at a lower RPM

  • @blackericdenice
    @blackericdenice 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you are going to tow a 9,000 lbs trailer. You should buy a 2500. A few people out here can't drive a pickup truck without the trailer. I drive a semi and I never see a 3/4 ton truck pulling a trailer sitting in a ditch.
    12:20 You are talking about something you don't understand. The 2.7 make more torque than the 5.3. The v8 is not going to pull better going up a hill. There is replacement for displacement, it's called boost.

  • @ridynh7923
    @ridynh7923 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This engine supposedly mimics the diesel. I guess that is true. While a diesel can haul SO much weight, they cannot always do it “fast”. Semis will pull 85k lbs up a mountain, but at 25mph. I have to think that is due to relatively low HP. HP is basically the rate/speed at which the work (torque) can be done.
    I doubt at 75 mph towing, this will do no better than my v8.

  • @63DW89A
    @63DW89A ปีที่แล้ว

    Likely the next upgrade to the 2.7L performance envelope by GM will be to increase the top end horsepower. GM likely focused on 430 ft lbs of torque at low end to prove to a doubting public that the turbo 2.7L inline 4 could even out-grunt the 5.3L V8. The 2.7L turbo already has considerably more low-end grunt than the 5.3L V8. All that needs to be done is to open up the top end towards 350-400HP. If GM increases the Inline 4's displacement to 3 L or 3.5 L, GM's inline 4 would eat Ford's 3.5L turbo V6 for lunch! And an inline 4 of 3.5 L would have bigger pistons than a 3.5L V6 and that would make for a faster torque rise for even better low-end grunt at lower RPM than the 3.5L V6. Plus the inline 4 of 3.5L would have a much tougher stouter bottom end than the weaker design V6. A 3.5 L inline 4 has the same bottom end, crankshaft strength and 5 main bearings of a 7.0 L V8, while a 3.5L V6 has the bottom end of a 1.75L 3 cylinder and only 4 main bearings. A inline 4 of 3.5L would be a much stronger engine design than a 3.5L V6 .

      I’m a ford guy now but I’ve had a 98silvy, a 2011sierra 6.2 and a vette. If you think GM is gonna improve any further on this 2.7 you’re a more positive guy than most. For whatever reason, they are still trotting out the 5.3L. GM moves at their own pace, and I suppose after the bailout and the epa regulations they have to. Idk man. I don’t see them giving the 3.5eco a run for it’s money(especially not the high output 3.5) with the 2.7 at any point moving forward. I’d like to see it though! Competition is good for all of us truck drivers.

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheYoungjames22 You are probably correct in your GM assessment, which would be an absolute shame. This 2.7 L turbo 4 is a great platform to build on, if GM would just do it. On displacement alone increasing to a 3.5 L 4-cylinder would bump torque to around 560 ft lbs just for a start. I've driven the Ford Ranger 2.3L 4 cylinder turbo fairly extensively now, and that is an impressive engine and drive train at the stock levels of 270 HP and 310 ft lbs of torque using 86 octane fuel. Ford has a winner in that 2.3. for sure. The Ford upgrade to the 2.3, requires 90 octane use, but bumps the figures to around 330 HP and 360 ft lbs of torque, with the torque curve bumping up to high levels around 340+ ft lbs just off idle, making that 2.3 a genuine torque monster in its own right. Ford would be well advised to move away from the V6 turbos toward inline 4's of same displacement because the inline 4 is mechanically a much stouter engine at the same displacement as a V6.

    Problem is thst people have wrong expectations. First did you see that semis acceleration from 0-60 in 10 seconds or what ever, or is that timing is really important in towing. Absolutely not. Semi's acceleration probably slower then this pickup, but more important they can both tow in own category. Second tow smart not over 60 mph , safety first. And yes you can tow 9000 pounds with 1/2 but then depends from trailer length too. More then 30ft you will need 3/4 pickup. That engine is working fine for ehat is designed just people trying to be smart and overload the vehicle like in this situation.
