Thanks so much for creating such a useful video. I am having to learn quickly about batteries and solar arrays as I have just purchased at auction a 5 year old 11KW roll-out solar array made by Renovagen who very sadly have gone bust. I am planning to try to restore it. Unfortunately the lithium batteries were removed before I got it so can't see if the unit will work. It used to have 16 x 24v 100ah lithium batteries and I think the system was working at 48v - I plan to connect up 4 x 12v 130ah lead batteries to provide the 48v to see what happens when power is sent to the control system.. I hope that will work and wake up! but unsure as it will be missing most of its batteries. The system has 3 x sunny Island inverters and 2 x Fronius Galvo battery inverters.. If anybody reading this fancies providing advice to a real beginner do let me know! Cheers Christian

One of the things you want to consider is what discharge rate to use. A too deep of a flooded or AGM battery discharge rate can drastically shorten the life of the batteries as well.
I read further down in the comments that Jesse addresses this by referring to a related video on batteries.

Great video. I realize I made so many mistakes in my setup. I have lead acid batteries all crammed together in one box, varying cable lengths to connect them, and the batteries are mix a brands and amp hr ratings. I am using 8 gage wire. My setup is a 800Watt solar panel array, with a 55amp charge controller. I guess I am off to Costco to get a few mirrored batteries. My gaol is to increase energy storage, and not necessarily increased power... if that makes sense. Based on your video, Parallel is the way to go.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your existing system setup. My compliments on your learning curve, and your intentions to improve your battery bank! Hello, I have 2 12 volt battle born 100ah batteries. They are wired in series and I am planning on buying two more that I can parallel with the first 2 in order to get a 24v 200ah bank. How many batteries can I series and parallel to maintain my system at 24 volts. So I do not need to upgrade to a higher voltage. Ive also looked at their new 270ah 12v batteries and I may just upgrade to those to keep the system at 24vdc and get more AH in the system... Just curious

Hello Ron! I have designed and installed numerous 48VDC battery banks composed of 2VDC FLA/AGM/GEL cells. In my opinion, these configurations have the potential to form rock-solid, reliable, cost-efficient and durable energy storage systems. Have you consulted the specification sheets of the cells yet regarding the charging voltages? Good luck!

If someone wanted to use lightweight, flexible solar panels to charge an electric car like a Tesla or a Rivian, I assume you would connect them in series? In this scenario, we are camping and hiking in a wilderness area for 2 to 5 days while the car is parked and not used while we hike; and when we get back to the car, it would be wonderful if it was fully charged. Even if we only charged for 1 or 2 days - that's free energy.

Than the way I got it now I got right now 4 12 volt batterys one set is series for 24 volts and the second set is series for 24 volts witch would be best the two sets of parellel inseries or the two sets of series in parellel? If i have two 6v in series do i have the positive main terminal and the the negative main terminal one on each 12v bank? Or do my main terminals all come from one 12v series and the parallel 12v series connection is just there as providing the amp hour increase?

I understand that more parallel string is not advised. would i need another inverter and c controller? could i connect another bank to my sw 4000 watt controller?

How do I get around the first battery, getting to 75% of power usage, and shutting down, having a cause and effect on the other three batteries, meaning not enough amp hours needed

Hello there!! I have a question regarding battery discharge current. Lets take one SOK 100Ah battery rated for 100Amps maximum continuous discharge current, which means 100amps of current can be drawn continuously. Now lets say I have a large inverter capable of drawing 200amps continuous at full load. Is it safe to assume that paralleling two series strings, each with 4 12V 100ah batteries to form a 48V 200ah battery bank provide the 200amps continuous draw of the inverter? THANKS in advance...

4 Batteries in series 12v 100ah would make 48v 100ah which can draw more amps with smaller cables. Vs 4 in parallel 12v 100ah would be 12v 400ah which requires larger wire. 12v 400ah is the same power usage as 48v 100ah.

Do I understand it correctly that your auxiliary battery bank is 24VDC, while your starter battery is 12VDC? Have you considered a 24V alternator yet? Have you considered changing the voltage of your auxiliary battery bank?

Hi. I have an issue whereby my 3x 20amp solar controllers produce current for 20 seconds then go off and restart 20 seconds later. The three controllers are connected to the battery bank through a single Anderson plug cable with 3 way double adaptors. This problem has occurred since I installed a renegy 3000w inverter battery to my battery bank (12v 100ah x4 in parallel lifepo4 battery bank). Is having 3 controllers connected to the bank on a single cable bad in any way? My guess is maybe the voltage from the other mppt gives a false voltage reading which is the charge current not the actual battery voltage.

Initially the same batteries were connected in a combination of series and parallel to make 48 volts installed on a 4000amps 3.5kva inverter.on the 3.5 kva inverter, battery was serving enough power to last through out the night.
After switching from the 48v to 96 volts inverter the batteries only lasted upto 9 o'clock in the evening.

How do we connect three 12V 100aH AGM batteries in series ("String 1") with five additional and identical Stings connected in parallel? The goal is a 36 Volt system with 600aH capacity connected to mppt charge controller(s)(?) powered/charged by solar panels during the day and supplying at night the load of inverter(s)(?) @ 120VAC to supply my house loads. I have calculated all the watthour/amphour needs and the 600aH battery bank depleted just 20% each night will satisfy all the loads of my house in winter.
How do I wire this series/parallel bank so it charges and dischargers the individual batteries evenly and does not over/under charge individual batteries or over/under load individual batteries in the bank/strings?
