Been a big fan of the MP110 for about ten years now. Wonderful cartridge, and increased my listening experience enormously after years of entry level old Audio Technicas. Recently acquired a used MP 500 with stylus in good condition for $25 ann I’m completely blown away!
Totally agree with you! ... the MP110 is a beautiful sounding cartridge for the price. I use it with a Rega P6 ... and it copes with all of my 1970's (not very well looked after) albums beautifully ... The sound from it is totally musical and extremely enjoyable. The Nagaoka is definitely not "overhyped" great review , thank you 👍👍👍
Hey. Quite off topic here, but I saw Antonio Sanchez play drums along to the 'Birdman' movie (that he did the music for) tonight in Kalamazoo. He took a solo at the end that was incredible! I'm digging into his work he did with Pat Metheny Group. Terrific drummer!
5 decades ago I realy enjoyed the Shure M55E.........very musical and allrounder, it's was decent offspring of the >>V15........ The MP110 somewhat reminds me of the musicality of the Shure........it's also a good cartridge to be used on lesser quality recorded vinyl ! It's also a good practice to buy the cartridge with a spare needle.....not to worry some years later and avoiding the inevitable inflation rate.. I had a lot of cartridges overs the years ..........some stay on the liking list over time like the V15III.......the Fidelity Research MC201...........EMT TD15........VDH...........DENON 304 and some others ......... The MP110 will not deceive ! when you LIKE music instead of the current audiophile hype performances .( and pricetags )
The Goldring E3 is a contender in this price range. I had the earlier Elektra (discontinued) which can still be bought as NOS from LP Gear for $130. It's more neutral than the MP-110 but not as rich sounding.
Nice review! You mentioned the Ortofon Blue but didn't comment on it. Is the Blue similar to the Red, being lean? How does MP110 stack up against it? Thanks for any insights you can provide.
I have not spent a lot of time with the Blue in that system. From what I heard it is still lean but not strident on the treble region. A bit more attack than the MP110. Some more listening is required before I make an opinion on the blue.
I have an SL-1200 MK2 with a grado green and I keep hitting a road block when it comes to which cart I should purchase next! It’s between this one and the vm95ml by audio technica. My Grado sounds good and when I want my albums to sound a little warmer or more “vintage” I swap out my grado for my Shure sc35c which I love. Which is better in your opinion?
It's been a while since I had the Shure Sc35 on my system. The one Shure I cannot get out of my head is the ML140HE. Of late, the AT VM95SH has been "wowing" me!
I love hi-fi…but the reason I love this channel is the presenter..down to earth and honest.
