  • How can we design a cantilever slab?
    Ans: Detailed design of Concrete cantilever slab is shown in this lecture video.
    Cantilever Slab
    A cantilever is a rigid structural element, such as a beam or a plate, anchored at one end to a (usually vertical) support from which it protrudes; this connection could also be perpendicular to a flat, vertical surface such as a wall. Cantilevers can also be constructed with trusses or slabs. When subjected to a structural load, the cantilever carries the load to the support where it is forced against, by a moment and shear stress.
    Cantilever slabs are a typical one way slabs. They are projections from wall face of lintel beams or floor slabs.
    Even while designing they are considered as one-slabs with cantilever fixed or continuous at supports.
    The reinforcement provided at the tension face should be checked for anchorage length near supports. The thickness of such slabs is varied from max. at the fixed end to the min. of 100 to 150 mm at the free end. Distribution steel should be provided at the transverse direction (for the coverage of shrinkage= Temperature Steel).
    Proper selection of depth and detailing of reinforcements will safeguard against excessive deflections and cracking of the cantilever slabs. Also, cantilever structural elements should be checked for safety against overturning.

    Great video! Is the reinforcement direction 1 always global X axis, or is it depend of panel/slab local X axis?

    why doesn't the distributed moment (7.5 kN-m/m as shown at 6:28) multiplied by the width (3.5 m) give the sum of strip moments (221 kN-m as shown at 8:12)?

    my cantilever beams all fail in shear. I modified the torsion constant to 0.001. But even then cantilever beams fail no matter how big section I assign. What might be the reason? It is bothering me from days. cantilever beams are not that long. They are only 3.5 ft, 3 ft and 1.5 ft. Here is my file drive.google.com/open?id=10Pr_WSKlv9L77CIb_aP9HbpYuux38fvA

      Dear you have lot of failures, like shear failure ,bcc falure... here i have shown in picture...
      drive.google.com/open?id=1JMiPhy874kYVTn1LRtmhHdST72d4iagd
      Secondly ... you have to increase the concrete strength and cross section size.....

      @@civilmdc I know. beam-column capacity ratio failure can be addressed by increasing the reinforcement in column or by increasing the column section. The cantilever beam failure in shear is what bothering me. The top floor cantilever beams have no load except 2.5 kN/m paraphet wall load, 1 KN floor finish and live load of 3 KN. And the cantilever beams are 3 m long. Even if I remove all external loads and design, it fails in shear. What might be the reason? This is the second time I modeled this building to make sure I didn't do any mistake but it still as same problem. I don't know what is the reason. please tell me the cause if you find any. I was modeling it in etabs 2016. I will try to model it in etabs 2015 once again. Thank you for your help! Best wishes!

    • @civilmdc
      @civilmdc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beenay18 Dear, i have checked.. your modelling is looking okay..... 1) yes you have to make strong column and weak beam (6/5 ratio check) 2) 3 m shade is little bit long .... you have to take care of this ... by changing section and changing strength of concrete..... It does not mean you are only getting loading from gravity loads... you are also getting loading from earthquake and wind loads..... and you have mentioned in your model that your model is high seismic area (i have seen your earthquake parameters).... and at last dear,,,, in real designing we also give much time ... in satisfying sections... and it takes time....

    • @beenay18
      @beenay18 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@civilmdc Thank you for your feed back in much needed time. I also modeled it in etabs 2015 and the result is same all cantilever beams fail in shear even if I remove all external loads from it. I don't think 3 ft long cantilever beams should fail on just dead weight of beam and slab. even 1.5 ft cantilever beams are failing. I have designed many buildings in etabs even with cantilever beams of 5 ft. I did not encounter this kind of result before. I have encountered this problem in two projects and I have not been able to find the cause. I think I must be doing something wrong. I would be really happy if you or somebody else in this comment section could find the cause. Thanks a lot!

    • @beenay18
      @beenay18 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@civilmdc If you look at the shear design details of the cantilever beam by right clicking it. The shear force Vu2 is in the range of 300 to 400 KN. It is very high. Its equivalent to the vertical reaction force Fz at the base of a column of a ordinary size 3 story building. It does not make any sense. Even the 1.5 ft long cantilever beams are failing. I am trying to find the cause of this problem. If you can suggest any cause I would be really really happy. Thanks!
