      Hey Julia. Loved ur video. Can u pls tell us, how you switch lens fast, and which bag you carry your lens. I don't like to miss the moment, while i change lens. And it's really frustrating to find the lens, remove the protective cover and attach it, then put on the cover to the prior lens safely before tugging it in your bag. So slow and frustrating. Any suggestion will be helpful.

      She has just in three video saved days of checking wasted videos and others with the 50mm competition and also getting the most from what you have but expanding to something that will gets lots of other work. So 35mm has one till down the track to go L 50 size lol.

    ONE OF THE PRIME REASON OF THE PICS BEING SO AWESOME IS THAT YOU ALL HAVE THE CEREMONY AT THE DAYTIME WHERE AS IN MY COUNTRY, INDIA, WE HAVE IT IN THE NIGHT TIME.. SO MOST PICS ARE FLASH/BOUNCE FLASH ORIENTED. AND HENCE THEY ARE NOT SO PLEASING TO THE EYES UNLESS WE HIRE AN EXPENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHER, WHO HAS ALL THOSE EXPENSIVE ACCESSORIES NEEDED TO MAKE IT LOOK AS NEAT AND PLEASANT AS POSSIBLE.... BTW, I HAVE LEARNT A LOT FROM YOUR VIDEOS...AND YOU ARE CUTE TOO!!!!😜😜 THANKS 😀😀😀

    On the one hand, this gave me a lot of confidence with the idea of shooting a wedding. I very much have the same values and approach to prime lenses as you do, so it's great to hear someone on the same level. On the other hand, I'm a uni student that just scraped enough together to recently get his first full frame camera - a 6D MkII. To work up towards the gear you have is going to be a long financial journey for me haha. And I know it's not all about the gear, but the idea of having two cameras at the ready to switch between instead of constantly re-attaching lenses sounds like an absolute dream for your workflow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to such detail!

    You certainly isolate your subject to perfection, I particularly like the name card and used the soft focus to direct your viewer. • @caleb4870
      @caleb4870 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amitkrupal1234 that could be a great way to get started, but I would actually suggest considering going full frame from the start. Weddings often have low light situations that a full frame sensor really helps with. You can find really good deals on an a7iii used and with third party lens like Samyang and Sigma having great 35mm and 85mm options that's the way to go if you can swing it.

    • @caleb4870
      @caleb4870 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One full frame camera (and a backup crop sensor if possible) plus the hassle of switching lenses is how I started. But renting gear could be a good option to see if you like doing weddings and what gear you would want.

    • @caleb4870
      @caleb4870 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It always felt bad to rent because it comes off the top of your revenue, but the learning experience is worth it... Gear lasts a long time and holds its value. Lenses are more important to invest in than camera bodies due to longevity. I'd say invest in full frame glass if possible and upgrade camera bodies to full frame later if it takes off

    Hey Julia. It's great you found a system that suits your workflow. Here's some food for thought though. I am a big guy and have no problems carrying heavy stuff, yet I find that carrying a set of prime lenses is really annoying to move and on a long day it's a waste of energy that can be used better. I'd rather carry 1 camera with a 24-70mm f/2.8 on it and an additional 70-200mm in a tiny shoulder bag to switch when needed. And use higher ISO and/or flash if needed. That's it. Feels much more comfortable to face long and fast paced events. Using zooms avoid the need of switching lenses constantly: it's annoying and makes you miss opportunities. And using a zoom should not prevent you from moving "to stay creative". Once you understand that "lens compression" is not about focal length but about your position relative to the subject and the environment that is creating the perspective, it just offer you the opportunity to have more coverage in a pinch.
    And on your argument about backup: you can have backup lenses of your choice where you left the rest of your stuff. It's a backup, it should be available but it's not needed to carry it.
    To sum up, of course everyone should work as they see fit. But the more I photograph, the more I find huge value in a light and simple setup of 1 (or 2) zoom, It's really one worry less and that frees me to concentrate on an already long list of other things: people, storytelling, coverage, lighting, composition, ...

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, it sounds like a lot when you're watching this video but the majority of the time my camera bag is just on the floor somewhere so I'm not carrying around all that stuff on my back all day! I also make sure to pick and change the lenses before something happens throughout the day, eg before the ceremony starts, before we head off for bridal portraits, etc, so there's no missing anything as my lenses are already on my cameras during the ceremony and I don't change them in the middle :) But yeah, definitely, every photographer is different and prefers different workflows and gear, etc. I just wanted to share the way I work in case anyone was interested to see how I shoot a wedding with only primes! Thanks for your great comment though!

    I plan to use more primes and less zooms in my events and weddings. It’ll keep me busier with more moving around and more lenses changes, but I think I’ll appreciate shooting with primes do to being f1.4 and f1.8, smaller in size and weight, just more fun to shoot with.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really enjoy using primes, I find that I'm not busy 100% of the time at a wedding - like there's always a minute here or there to be able to change your lens without missing out on anything! And I do also find that moving around to compose my shots is fun too :)

  • @deanoplym
    @deanoplym 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's great to have lenses at f1.2 for low light, but you also have to factor in the % of shots in focus at f1.2 as it has such a narrow dof. And shooting at 1.2/1.4 like a lot of wedding photographers do is great for isolating subjects but usless when you want more than one person in focus in the shot. I have primes at 1.8 which are great for weddings but I stick to my 24-70 as sometimes you're in a position where you need to zoom quickly or you miss the shot. I'd rather get the shot having used a pro zoom than having to shoot wide or in tight because I only have 2 primes.

    Thank you for another superb video. Recently I have found myself using prime lenses more and more and this weekend, for the first time I am planning to go out without a zoom lens at all. Usually I take a standard zoom lens with me just in case there is a shot that would be more difficult with a prime, but you are right - not having that option will force me to think and come up with a more creative solution. I do feel a bit naked going out without a zoom though.One thing that did surprise me was that you often choose a combination of lenses with focal lengths that are quite close together - such as the 24mm and the 35mm or the 35mm and the 50mm. Before I watched the video I was expecting you to combine a wide angle with a telephoto - so from the lenses you have I was expecting you to choose the 35mm and the 135mm for example. That way you could take a group shot with the 35mm and then switch to the camera with the 135mm lens mounted to take a close up of one person. In practice do you find that there is a lot of difference between the 35mm and the 50mm and do you sometimes need to replace one of them with the 85mm or the 135mm during the shoot?

    Interesting, thanks. I have been toying with the idea of trying to shoot a wedding mostly on primes for a while but was missing the vital 35mm. Bought that and it really has made a difference to my work. I didn't 'quite' go all prime in the evening though and used a 70-200 for some of the table shots. It was quite a tight space and big open tables so wanted to isolate individuals as to get people talking across the tables looked too messy, but the rest was all primes. My back thanks you too, so much lighter!

    Hello from Texas! I'm shooting my first wedding next month and I've been following your channel for a while. I really appreciate this video, couldn't have come at a better time.
    Couple of questions:
    Do you have a long body and a short body? So you know the 50/85 will be on the right hip, 24/35 on the left, etc?
    Where do you keep the lenses when there not on the body?
    For the flash photos you showed us, did you bounce, modify, or point it straight at your subject?
    What's your technique for focusing on the dance floor in low light?
    Thanks again!

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! I'm glad I could help :)
      I don't have a long/short lens, I usually put the lens I know I'm going to use the most on my right side as that is my dominant hand, and the lens I am using for those "extra" shots on my lens. Eg at the ceremony I would put the 85mm on my right as I use it the most and the 50 on my left as I don't need it as often.
      I keep the rest of my lenses and gear (batteries, memory cards, etc) in my camera bag which is usually in a thought out position that I can easily get to if I need to change something. Since I change my lenses before parts of the day (eg, before ceremony, before speeches, etc) I don't usually need to change them while something important is happening.
      I bounce my flash photos! I should have mentioned that in the video but there are too many things to talk about haha. I point my flash almost upwards and bring out the card to bounce the light. So it's still very bright, but more ambient rather than direct.
      For focusing, I have a detailed video about how I do that: th-cam.com/video/t1eVrLjdCzA/w-d-xo.html&t I use the same technique! Also, by having a flash on my camera, the speedlight has a focus light to help in those darker situations :)

    Julia thank you for this video! I really like your perspective about prime lenses! They do have such a special quality too them. But... struggling because often shooting these days moving cows! They come in so fast, and then I am out of focus. Is it time to invest in a telescopic lens, or maybe I should try shooting with two cameras also. The thing is that if I get up out of my position in the tall grass, all the cows stop and move away. So it makes moving around not a great option. Thanks for this great video! You are great at sharing lots of details !

    Love your videos Julia.. really appreciate the insight into how you go about shooting weddings. Of course it's not always possible shooting wide open as there are situtations where you need that depth of field i.e. people that aren't all on the same focal plane. How far do you generally stop down to capture those shots? Also, do you shoot in aperture priority or manual mode?

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I always shoot in manual mode as it's become second nature for me and I don't even think about it anymore. I usually shoot around f2 for a wedding as there is lots of movement and people walking around while I'm getting photos of them. The most I stop down would be around 2.8 - 3.5 for the family/group shots + dance floor photos with flash!

    Great to see you switch it up from fashion and post-processing to talk about wedding photos. Awesome candid images!
    What do you think about primes vs zooms when you’re first starting out in wedding photography - at least until you can be a little better prepared and positioned by anticipating moments?

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! When I first started in wedding photography, I would second shoot with other photographers to gain some experience. I had a 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.2 and 24-70mm 2.8. I think it just comes down to personal preference and what you feel comfortable with, but I hardly ever decided to use my zoom during that time and stuck to using my 50 and 85 throughout the day instead. I would only use my 24-70 when things were getting a little crazy throughout the day for example if the bride and groom were running late so things needed to be rushed. So I guess if you're starting out a zoom lens can save you for those instances until you feel comfortable not having to rely on zoom!

    • @JoutsideTO
      @JoutsideTO 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Out of curiosity, were you shooting with one or two bodies at that point? I’d love to go with my 35 1.4 and 85 1.8, but just a little worried about keeping up.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The very first few weddings I only used one body, after about 5 or so weddings I felt like I needed 2 so I started using 2 bodies afterwards and never looked back!

    WOW!!! I got worn out just by watching you go through all those lens changes for one job. Another reason why I don't shoot weddings anymore video or stills. I do primarily shoot events, video and stills. For that I use a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 as my goto (for unclose and personal) and then I use the big boy Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 (for far and away) with a basic Lumix 12-60mm as backup. I find this to be the best and fastest kit for me for what I do. Mostly all the events that I shoot I must be very mobile and the action can happen at a pretty rapid unpredictable pace. Even with these my kit can weigh in at quite a bit especially by the end of the day. Prime lenses (when the job demands it) I use a set of Rokinon Cine DS lenses with the 35 and 85mm being my goto. Those are for a more planned out non event situations such as portraits, etc. Primes are the best to use but does not always fit in every job or environment. It is as always whatever works best for each individual and the specific jobs that they must do. So it can take a few cockups in order to get it right. Most important you learn what works best for YOU from experience.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha it's not that bad, you're at a wedding all day so changing lenses once every 1 - 2 hours isn't that much! That's awesome about your workflow too. And I couldn't agree more, it's super important to learn what works best for you! Every photographer is different :D
