    I love your videos, so much to learn. Why does the aperture change when you punch into crop mode on your A7R5 ?

    • @timgimbert3073

      The exposure aperture doesn't change so you don't need to worry about it changing. However because it is cropping in the perceived depth of field changes.

    I currently shoot 16-35GM 24-70G MII 70-200 GMII 35F1.4 GM and Sigma 85mm f1.4 art. I am thinking of going all prime If I move to A1 cameras, so like you I can use APSC mode which I have done on my A7RIII. I can't live without my stacked sensor and silent shooting which I get from my A9. I do find it interesting how you and other wedding photographers manage with 24 being your widest, and often 35mm. My 16-35 does not get used a lot but when needed its the only lens for the job, I could cope with the 20F1.8 . Very large group shots both inside and out and fireworks are just two cases when I reach for the 16-35gm

    Over the decades, the prime lenses I have used for weddings has changed.
    I shot my first wedding in the late 1960s.
    I shot my last wedding just before Covid.
    1. Yashica-mat medium format TLR with 80mm lens
    2. Mamiya C3, C22, C220 medium format TLR cameras with 180/80/55mm lenses
    3. Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR with 180/90/50mm lenses
    4. Nikon 35mm SLR with 180/85/35/24mm lenses
    5. Olympus micro 4/3 compact with 45/20/14mm lenses
    6. Fuji APS-C X-Pro 1 and X-Pro2 with 135/56/23/16/12mm lenses
    I usually shot with two camera bodies and had a third body as backup.

    Always look forward to your vids. What Canon EF to Sony E adapter do you use with your tilt shift lens? Thanks!

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer

      Thanks so much! For tilt shift I'm music cheapest mechanical adapter (no control over aperture) which is fine. Before that I've been using borrowed sigma mc-11 and it worked great, but I gave it back and haven't really find a reason to purchase such expensive adapter for mechanical connection that I need

    I don’t understand how you can use these large aperture f1.4 or f1.2 for couple shots or group shots. The depth of field is so thin that’s impossible to get both or all of them in focus.

    Switched to Fuji for events wedding and cooperate headshots. Do enjoy shooting a lot more, but I do miss the GM's and the sigmas dg Dan. They are just so good.
    Same as the bodies, so good that they become boring. Still miss then ;)

    Definitely great to have those "creative" lenses as an option and fun to have..like the ones you have mentioned..I just recently picked up the Helios 44-2 lens with the "swirly bokeh"..lol I am intrigued with the "tilt shift" lens..I have seen in your previous videos..that is something I want to try for sure later down the line..

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer

  • @madeyez1691

    Is the aperture of 1.4 for example really effected by the crop?? I don't think so. You can keep your shutterspeed just as fast as it would be without the apsc crop. You don't lose any light. Just Megapixels. Or am I wrong???

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer

      Not it terms of the light coming to your sensor, so you can still keep shutter speeds, but in terms of depth of field effect - you loose out on that

      Thanks! Obviously some clients do not wish their photos to be published and then it's reflected in contracts. But (to me) that happens rarely - on maybe 1 wedding per 20. Most of my clients are rather chill.

  • @OneRequiem123

    I'm assuming when you use the adapted focal lengths on the lenses that make them punch in, that they don't actually have the same compression or depth of feild effect that the new focal length has in reality?

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer

      It matches the focal length and compression. The only thing you loose out is depth of field - so 1.4 becomes 2.1 (you also need to multiply by x1,5). Check my FF vs APS-C comparisons:

    Hi Magic. Another great video - it's got me thinking about your set up. One question if I may, when using a lens at it's native focal length on the A7Rv are you shooting at 61 MP, or can you set the A7Rv to shoot 26MP on say 35 and still be on 26MP when you punch in? I'm not familiar with the A7Rv, I've been an A9 user for years but love the idea of what you do.

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer

      Hey Neil! Thanks! Yes, so on A7RV you can use medium RAW (it’s called lossless compressed medium) that has 26mp. But whenever you turn your camera into APS-C mode it does crop from full RAW, and that also gets you 26mp.

    My choice would be Sony 24mm 1.4 GM which also works as a "35mm 1.4" in APSC mode on Sony A7RIV+V with 26 megapixel, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 ZA, ZEISS Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, two Cameras, one with the 24mm and the other with either 55, 85 or 135mm.

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer

      Vert good choices! Just to add my few cents to this as I was considering 24/1.4 on main body switchable to 35mm, but... then it's a 35/2.1, which I don't want for my main lens. I really want that 1.4 on 35.

  • @Joyofvision99

    Just remember everyone, a 50 will always be a 50. In crop mode it still has the compression of a 50. No different than cropping in post except you save on file size .

    • @bartonyszko4512

      Yes but because magic shoots in medium raw 26mp he uses crop mode to crop in camera without loosing resolution. He can’t crop in post to the same level unless he shoots at 61mp which would case a workflow slowdown because of the unnecessarily large file size.

    • @Joyofvision99

      @@bartonyszko4512 Yeah what I did NOT know is that if you shoot Medium Raw at 26mp then change the crop mode, it still has 26 mp. Thats pretty awesome. I assumed it would shave that down to lets say 12 mp.
