Depending on the route, time of year, and province, one thing is certain, the weather is likely to vary. It could be cold in the early morning or scorching hot at noon. It could also rain at very short notice. So, a wise and prudent pilgrim needs to be prepared but what is the best rain gear to have ready?

I used a rain jacket and pants on the VDLP and an Altus Atmospheric Poncho (bought at Caminoteca in Pamplona).. Neither were perfect. I built up quite a bit of body heat / sweat with the Altus, but learned to keep it more open when possible... I will probably continue to use the Altus (sunk cost fallacy?). ¡Buen Camino!

Best way to know if the garment you buy will withstand your expectations is to check the label and water resistancy measured in mm as a reader has previously conmented.
10000mm-20000mm should cover you for a couple of hours in the pouring rain,a decathlon poncho you were wearing won't and they get very humid a wet on the inside.Great bomb proof (waterproof)trousers you can get are Patagonia with zips on the side for ventilation and easy to put on even with boots on but not cheap, nevertheless well worth the money spent.

I agree 100%. I hiked in April, 2022 with a light, waterproof hooded jacket with matching rain pants. I abandoned the rain pants after the first week. Too much weight to carry when it wasn't raining, and even in the rain, they made my legs sweat on all but extremely cold days, so my legs got wetter with the pants than without them.

Thanks, Ray. It's good to get your agreement and I hope we can help others in their decision-making.

I get too hot while walking and need a cape style rain gear.

Yes, I can understand that. But what about when it's cold in the mornings?

I got a poncho that can handle 5000mm rain and because it is so long if I also add my gaiters that cones up to my knee it should keep me dry. My only concern is that it weighs 500grams. I am walking Frances in April/May
