- This is the Harrier boss in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on Extreme difficulty.
I recommend trying the same as shown here to avoid the deadly rocket barrage. I haven't found a better way myself.
you went though all the trouble of making sure the bridge doesnt blow when you cross it.
and then solidus blows it up anyway.
Its really sad I like Solidus more than alot the other villains. The sadness was he really didn't have the huge impact that Liquid, Ocelot, and others had on the series throughout the series. Solidus was really charming yet devious in an awesome way. Almost more of an anti hero than a villain. The voice synthesizer really makes this battle absolutely hilarious and fun.
Also the actor is death too :(

Actually, he was major plot point in MGS4 (his remains were thought to be those of Big Boss in Act 3 of the story as they were protected by EVA). His canonical death was in that game while his brain death was in MGS2, at the end of game. Solid Snake technically lived up to Solidus’ wish and destroyed the Patriots once and for all at the end of MGS4, too. But yeah, I get ya

I am absolutely impressed with your gameplay. You battled on here like a guru. Most players when they fight on this boss look very sloppy and almost or most of the times die.
Snake will not throw me a damn ration
big boss: i took down tons of tanks and choppers.
solid snake: i took down a 2 tanks & 2 hind D's and metal gear rex.
raiden: bitches...i took down a harrier, 26 mg rays, a stealth bomber and metal gear excelsus .
Me: But you had Cybernetic enhancements while accomplishing most of those things Raiden. ;)

I finally beat this on extreme after like 50 attempts! The codec following:
Plisken: "Raiden, are you alright?"
Me/Raiden: "NO! No, we're not alright! This has been a very emotional and stressful time for us! Can we get a minute please?! Also, what the hell were YOU doing Snake/Otacon?! 🤨 3 times you got in my way and blocked my stinger shots yet still thru focus, dedication and sheer f-ing WILL I endured and emerged victorious, no thanks to you ass-clowns!"

That's what happens when a series gets further in western market. It all started from MGS4 with Laughing Octopussy's "It's fucking hysterical!"
I was stuck on this fight on the original xbox but having to go through it again for the dog tag achievement has me worried a bit. I never got past it before on Extreme. I guess I'll give it a go when the time comes.

It is just now I realized that Solidus says "Burn Baby" when he tries to kill you with the exhaust from the jet. I always thought it was, "MORE INCOMING"

Hey, an easier way to dodge the missile barrage is to crouch 80% of the way up the stairs, if anyone is wondering.

This exact moment would've been a great Final Smash for Snake in Brawl. Just have Solidus come in over the stage and burn everyone with his thrusters to 1hko everyone it touches.
@doctorloquendo1 It IS Extreme mode. How can you explain the fact that Solidus always launches rockets instead of bullets when he zooming in from the horizon? How about that moment that the cluster bombs erupted on the bridge just 3 seconds after they're deployed? Trust me, it is Extreme mode. Don't beleve me and Sinful? Try it yourself, but be warned, you'll be ripping your own hair out due to frustration, I gurantee it.
speaking of cheap tricks, a very good one for solidus on extreme is to hang over the ledge and get back up as hes about to hit you. 74 slashes later, the battle is over lol

Huh. That's funny. On my HD collection i got Extreme + European Extreme just when I finished the game, and I played on easy.

Man, I'm so jealous - I simply CANNOT do this. His machine gun is so hard to avoid, and all of his other attacks are one-hit kills. I had no problem with Hard, but Extreme is truly living up to its name.
+Moozipan Cheese I honestly think I can't do this boss anymore. I was just playing MGS2 extreme the other day and I just can't be able to beat this boss anymore. Guess I'm losing touch with this game.
I came back to this yesterday and I finally did it! Yay! Used some different strats than this video (using the invincibility frames when climbing over the railing to avoid the missiles, getting in a box at the bottom of the bridge to avoid the gunfire more easily, cartwheeling left and right over and over underneath the bridge when he fires the barrage of one-hit-kill missiles, etc.) and I'm so glad I'm finally done with this game. Not even going to try European-Extreme.
I died about than 30 times to take this Harrier down. About another 40 times to take Vamp down many years ago.
Hard is basically easy since you have endless Ration while in Extreme you have none.
I found out in someone's walk through a few enemies will have rations, but only a select few and you have to shake them SO MANY TIMES
That was good but too late to know. I only found ONE RATION during the whole EXTREME. And that ONLY RATION I found is in the Metal Gear Ray fight. So it is basically useless since you are about to finish the game............ Beside, when Solidus torture Raiden, I died about 30 times and my arm was nearly broken. The O2 bar and life bar drained fast as hell. I wasn't able to restore my health that fast and died like 30 times. Simply because I pressed too slow. I thought I will stuck there and can't finish the game. Until miracle happened.

This should be the final battle in extreme mode. It's without a doubt the hardest. Some people bitch about the Tengu soldiers, but this battle is fucking unreasonably hard!
It does, lol. I got the blue wig at the end of that playthrough so it was definitely extreme. Try it this way: back raiden against the wall at the very top of the stairs. The camera angle should change. Then move sideways down the stairs until the camera angle changes again. As long as you crouch right there with your back against the wall, you don't get hit.
On Extreme every boss fight in this game puts you to your limits. Even Fatman is doable without any cheap tricks. It's just really hard and you need to know how to fight him.
Bad game design? Not at all. I haven't ever seen anyone complain about the fps in this game before you. It's really smooth considering how great the graphics are for ps2. I haven't had any problems with the camera in this game. You probably could not play MGS1 if you have complaints like these on MGS2.
Try beating him without using rations. I'm sure he's a challenge. I got into the final boss on extreme but then my PS3 broke and had to start over. It sucks you have to play through the game on Hard once before you get to access the Extreme difficulty.
I think that's a wrong mentality to go with it. I wish more games these days were as challenging as this on the hardest difficulty.
If you're having issues in this fight because of occasional fps drop, controls or the camera, you simply need to get better at it. Those who're good at this game don't fail cause of those "problems". Yes, there is slight fps drop at times but it doesn't bother me enough to mention it. I don't ever miss my shots cause of it :)
I think the gameplay and controls in this game are really good and fluid. There's no camera issues or slow frame rate either. Challenge is much more than just relaxation and strategy. In game such as this you'll need to be able to control your character precisely to succeed. Maybe this just isn't your thing.
It could be cause even the Hard difficulty isn't even close to hard in this game and when they try Extreme, it actually IS extreme unlike the Hard mode which isn't hard at all.
I see you got balls AND guts doing this method, but for me, I use hanging mode for the Harrier rockets Solidus launches at you when he's approaching me from the horizon. Transitions on/off Hanging modes renders you invincible. As for the ones he launches when by the bridge, I used your suggestion about that situation. I also try to hit the Harrier whenever I can, when he's just flying by and when he's prepping to use the machine gun or his rockets. Kudos on bringing him down. That makes 2 of us.
I agree with SinfulOcelot's reply, I'm actually frustrated to hell with this battle right now but a lot of today's games are far too easy on the harder difficulties. Hope you manage to beat this boss soon! :)
At the beginning, instead of equiping the stinger straight away and aiming over the fence you can use an assault rifle and take down abit of health, not alot like, but its something
I'm not looking forward to this. I'm going for that Great Fane trophy though. I'm at the RAYs battle on hard now, but this harrier, RAYS, and solidus are going to be ridiculous on extreme. Vamp's easy due to a little trick with the nikitas.
LOL what? At least on the HD collection, the game had a huge slowdown and framerate drops in the harrier fight, which is expected though because of the explosion and destruction; that actually made me miss a shot. As for the camera and controls, just.... The controls are fluid but they overlap and the camera isn't helping either, especially in this fight.
Very nice, you know you can just repeatedly fire rockets at the bottom of the harrier when it tries to burn you and you wont get hurt.You can get about 5 stingers into him at this point
After the first 2 minutes, when the Harrier starts shooting the bullets, how did the Semtex not explode? I saw him hit them.
When the challenge is about relax and strategy then that's fine, but the poorly designed, stiff, sticky control is a really bad handicap here
No I am not. I finished this fight on my second try on hard. This is my first playthrough and I wanted to attempt a no kill, no alert, no ration run, but I have to complete the game first. I might try to get the big boss rank later, but I am not sure if I have the patience to do it because of repeating lot of large sections (8 saves). The problems are there in the game and they are a part of bad game design but getting around them is manageable; they are not severe.
You're right, it doesn't take Hard mode playthrough to get Extreme and Euro Extreme modes.
I remember defeated him back on PS2 MGS2 greatest hits non-substance edition. I just beat him on the MGS: HD Edition for PS3. He was a tough one. Can't wait for solidus lol. Thanks for the vid again :)
It gets easier the more you play the game. I used to be a sucker for MGS and played these games through all the time.
Yep. I completed MGS1 and I people who liked and played that game a lot. They acknowledged the problems with the camera. As for the framerate, I personally liked the framerate the most about this game, aside from stuff from ending about memes and control. I didn't notice any problems with the framerate except on this fight and some other places but it only affected me on this fight.
Some say Harrier is harder in the HD collection. Just beat it some time ago and it was tough.
i remember the first time i beat the harrier on extreme. felt so relieved....then i got to vamp and my continue count skyrocketed
There's radar on Extreme, not sure about European Extreme though.

Thanks for the video bro I just finally defeated him. I couldn't dodge the MG's on top so I went to the bottom and just moved and crouched, it was easier for me.

For the gun attack I go to the lower level with a box and use that to hide and circle around.

You've been playing on Hard. Extreme doesn't let you go off that easy.
That does work on Hard and below but not on Extreme.

And from Very easy to Hard he will assist you on taking out the harrier. On Extreme he wont help you take the harrier.
