I think you will really like this one: Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band. I just loved this song as it played on the radio when I was a child. It has beautiful harmonies.
This song was a huge hit you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it back in the day. I wonder how many poor girls born back then who were named after this song LOL
Joseph Dockemeyer true- Sharona was like 16/17 and the singer was 25 I think. They are both young, however, I mean, nine years between those ages is still pretty close to be considered a no-no. I am not a male, so I can’t explain his thinking , but as a girl of that age, you would still have wonder why he was hell bent you know? But, then again, back in the early days, men of 25 or older were put together with girls16-18 or so... Just to note: I would have put a stop immediately to anybody this had Sharona been my daughter .
Hot Child in the City was his biggest solo hit, but he also had Here Comes the Night. He also sang Roxy Roller with his band Sweeney Todd. Nick was from Vancouver, BC, and we were very proud of him for being one of the first Vancouver artists to break through.
Golden Earring a one hit wonder ? Even here in the states they had Radar Love , Twilight Zone , Something Heavy Going Down , Midnight Moonlight , and WhenThe Lady Smiles on MTV in the 1980s.
Everytime You Go Away may have Paul Young's only US number 1, but it was not his only number 1 or top 10 song out in the wider world. Wherever I Lay My Hat, Love of the Common People, Come Back and Stay were all big hits. So hadly a one hit wonder.
'She Blinded Me With Science' is also not a one hit wonder if your measure is song in the Billboard 100 - 'Europa and the Pirate Twins' and 'Hyperactive' also 'hits' on that measure.
Oh my goodness....are you from Detroit, MI? I listened to CKLW when I was growing up! I live in FL now, but I don't think I've heard anything mention CKLW since I was a kid. What a great station!!😀👍
There were no end of "One Hit Wonders" back in the 60s and 70s. Two of my favorites from the 70s were "Rock Your Baby 'by George McRae and " and "Jackie Blue" by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. I can see many of your followers have some great picks too. Great stuff.
A Flock of Seagulls "I Ran" Gary Numan "Cars" Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls" Tony Basil "Mickey" Tommy Tutone "867-5309" Blues Image "Ride Captain Ride" And everybody's favorite, Men Without Hats "The Safety Dance". I could go on all night!
Tommy tutone! A good song to find your friend in a crowd in a foreign country. You're the only 2 people that know the song yet draws no attention like shouting a name out. 8675....eventually you hear your friends 309. Well,.......it works
Jay from a person as ancient as myself it’s so good to watch yourself react to music that I have had around me for so many years from ELO , the Stones and now the one hit wonders like the Knack , keep going and keep enjoying the past
Another great one is "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash. Just to be clear, you'll be doing songs that were just one-hit wonders in the US, right? I ask because there are certain artists that may have had only one hit in North America, but have done well in other parts of the world.
Incredible song. It's hard to believe the band didn't go places! Like you said, a lot of great elements in this number. Most people have heard the main part of the song, but the guitar solo is fantastic too.
They deserved more success. I love your channel, you play all the songs of my misspent youth! I remember dancing to this. I used to train horses for other people. There was only me and my dad, so we couldn't afford to buy one for me. But I had a way with horses, and would train them. Then one day my dad came in and said there was something outside for me. I went out and there was this beautiful grey horse. And I named her Sharona. That was the happiest moment of my life.
60's one hit wonders Spirit in the Sky Norman Greenbaum, Summertime Blues Blue Cheer Classical Gas Mason Williams, Israelites Desmond Dekker, Friday on my Mind The Easybeats ;)
Der Commisar was a hit by After The Fire . Falco did Der Commisar , and Rock Me Amadeus . I think After The Fire counts as a ' one hit wonder ' band , but Falco doesn't.
To this very day I still pump up the volume to this song! When it gets to the guitar and drums solo I pump it up even more because it sounds so good! Thank you for reacting to this song! Love it!
The '60s one-hit wonders that I would actually recommend: "Get Together" by The Youngbloods "For what it's worth" by The Buffalo Springfield "Dirty Water" by The Standells "Judy in Disguise" by John Fred and the Playboys These are songs I actually like and think you would as well, most of the one-hit wonders from that decade were either novelty songs like the Monster Mash or songs I view as forms of torture like Hey There Lonely Girl. Perfect start for this series! I love this song! So glad you enjoyed it too! Re: studio vs. live, I think it really depends on each song and the quality of what’s available. Hopefully people will make recommendations regarding that when they make requests. I’m trying to check on what’s available more before I request so I can be specific about which version.
Oh, I love dancing to this song, this was a big hit back then because it was a great song at the clubs. You could go out by yourself on the dance floor and just start dancing, no one cared. Incense and Peppermints, Debby Boone you light up my life, Dancing in the Moonlight, Don't Give up on us Baby by David Soul, Ride Captain Ride, Layla, Love Hurts, etc., some great ones out there.
I'm in Heaven! The Knack is one of those groups that I wish I had gotten to see live. You can say they were a one-hit-wonders but at least 2 of their albums, Get The Knack and The Little Girls Understand both have some great enjoyable songs on them. My Sharona was definitely above the rest though. It is PURE GOLD! If you were ever in Las Vegas to hear a band that I mentioned to you before, Yellow Brick Road, they used to do an awesome cover to this song. They are still together although with a different lead singer but still really good. Hopefully, they can get safely back to work again.
Seeing this reminds me of the old variety shows. From comedy bits to bands, every type of popular entertainment could be found & was mostly family-friendly fare.
Maaan ! This is a long version I never heard. That long solo wasnt played on the radio 'cause it would have been too long, but hearing it now for the first time, it blew me away. Its a shame they didnt come up with any other great tunes.
When I was working at Rockefeller Center in New York for the morning show at NBC they had a one hit wonder day . When this band came on I looked up at the roofs of the buildings on 49 th street ,they were filled with people clapping along to this band as they sang My Sharona . They had half of Manhattan rocking and it was like 9 AM
In the summer of 1979, my cousin picked me up from my house in his white Van in the Sunset. Two large speakers in the back of it. He had a tape of it in the front of the Van. We drove down past Louie's, onto the great highway. In those days with no lights one could drive 100 miles an hour from the Cliff House to the Zoo and back and in record time.
loved that song - how about 'talk talk' by the music machine. or 'you ain't seen nothin' yet by the blues magoos. man what a musical time to be alive! also can't forget 'it's cold outside' by the choir.
Spirit In The Sky" - Norman Greenbaum 1969
Great one!!!
On the list
I love this song!
JayveeTV Yay!
We’ve debated the appropriateness of this for a funeral.
"In The Year 2525" & "Spirit In The Sky" -
Two great picks.
Wow, I just suggested 2525, Great Choices!
Vincent Schmitt when I heard it in 68’ I thought, “Yeah Right” but I loved it, it made me think.
“Turning Japanese” - The Vapors OR “I Know what Boys Like” - The Waitresses. BTW...Great first song for the series!
Seconded!!
I hate "I Know What Boys Like". It's such a piece of shit.
1980's Katrina and the Waves singing Walking on Sunshine... Great song! Super fun and timeless!!
Yeeeeeees! Love that song..... It's so uplifting... One of my favourites ❤️
They weren't one hit wonders!
"Come On Eileen" - Dexy's Midnight Runners
Gino - Dexy's Midnight Runners
Yes!
definitely!
Absolutely! XDD
They had a few hits in the UK.
The Buggles - ''Video killed the radio star''
first video to ever play on MTV. it's a classic
Ted the reason it's considered 80s is because of it being first listened to by many to start MTV.
Ooooh yea. That's a classic!!!
Good one! 🤝
The Knacks first album was a pop masterpiece!
I think you will really like this one:
Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band.
I just loved this song as it played on the radio when I was a child. It has beautiful harmonies.
Escape . The Pina Colada song by Rupert Holmes .
Nooooooo
I so love that song. So many great memories with it...😊
And probably the only rock song with a marimba solo.
I've always thought this song got a bad rap.
This song was a huge hit you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it back in the day. I wonder how many poor girls born back then who were named after this song LOL
No one talking about the lyrics of this song. About a guy who has a hard-on for jailbait.
Joseph Dockemeyer true- Sharona was like 16/17 and the singer was 25 I think. They are both young, however, I mean, nine years between those ages is still pretty close to be considered a no-no. Supposedly before this song, there were about 10 a year named Sharona. After this song around 70 or so!
“Hot child in the City” by Nick Gilder. Trust me, please! 💛✌️
OMG, I haven't thought of that song in at least 20 years! :D
Totally
Those high notes...Ohmygosh!!!
Always thought it was a woman singing it
for the longest time!
Hot Child in the City was his biggest solo hit, but he also had Here Comes the Night. He also sang Roxy Roller with his band Sweeney Todd. Nick was from Vancouver, BC, and we were very proud of him for being one of the first Vancouver artists to break through.
Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire. Lot of emotion in this song.
Great one
just loved that song when it came out - depressing but still relevant today
Saw Larry singing that in "The Stand", got interested, found it, and fell in love with it. Pure passion in that performance.
Here it is: th-cam.com/video/fmTDWPd7RgU/w-d-xo.html
@@dasboot211221 thank you, I just listened after not hearing it in quite sometime and the same chills, it's scary how it applies to our world today
My Sharona is fantastic. Its from their album "Get The Knack" . All the tracks on that album are superb.
'Oh Tara', 'Your Number or Your Name', 'Maybe Tonight, 'Let Me Out', 'She's So Selfish', banger after banger.
Golden Earring - Radar Love
Golden Earring a one hit wonder ? Even here in the states they had Radar Love , Twilight Zone , Something Heavy Going Down , Midnight Moonlight , and WhenThe Lady Smiles on MTV in the 1980s.
@@victorwaddell6530 Yes, J, if you're going to react to 'Radar Love' then please add 'Twilight Zone' to your list as well.
@@victorwaddell6530 Oh, they had other songs, but none came close to Radar Love.
Yes, really time to showcase a Dutch band :-)
Twilight Zone...
Try “She Blinded Me With Science” by Thomas Dolby; “Every Time You Go Away” by Paul Young; and “Nite and Day” by Al B Sure.
Science !
Everytime You Go Away may have Paul Young's only US number 1, but it was not his only number 1 or top 10 song out in the wider world. Wherever I Lay My Hat, Love of the Common People, Come Back and Stay were all big hits. So hadly a one hit wonder.

I forgot all about Al B Sure! So good!
"Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass
Just released
Damn it ! I just posted that , looked down and you beat me to it .
Echo Beach by Martha & the Muffins. Great one hit wonder song from 1980. It’s still on the radio, here and there.
Absolutely love that song!!
Try “In the Year 2525” by Zager & Evans. Released twice in 1968 & 1969. The Lyrics are way ahead of it’s time. Give it a Spin.
Kung Foo Fighting. Don't remember who did it, but the year it came out CKLW named it the number one hit.

I believe this is the first song parodied by "Weird" Al Yankovic: "My Bologna"
Lee E. I must have been living under a rock! I don’t think I’ve heard that one! 👍👍😂 Love me some AY!
He needs to update it to"My Corona"
Indeed it was. It premiered on the Doctor Demento Show in 1978. I still remember the night I first heard it!
I was just thinking of that! Couldn’t remember if it was Weird Al or not.
@@ragjamrock There is a parody titled that here on YT..
"What I like about you" by The Romantics and "what do all the people know" by The Monroes, great early 80s one hit wonder
I think they had another song, Talking in Your Sleep...
Here's a one hit wonder the Starland Vocal Band Afternoon Delight,it's great.
The McCoy's "Hang on Sloopy" 1965 I think and "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmore and the Fireballs. I think that was 1963. Both catchy tunes.
An early 80s classic one hit wonder "The beat goes on/Switchin to Glide" from 'the Kings' it was on the radio constantly.
A couple of my favorite one hit wonders"never been any reason" by Head East and"children of the sun" by Billy Thorpe ☮️

"Get Together" by The Youngbloods
"For what it's worth" by The Buffalo Springfield
"Dirty Water" by The Standells
"Judy in Disguise" by John Fred and the Playboys
These are songs I actually like and think you would as well, most of the one-hit wonders from that decade were either novelty songs like the Monster Mash or songs I view as forms of torture like Hey There Lonely Girl. The first 3 are incredibly well-known songs the last is just a personal favorite and is pretty obscure but it was a hit.
These guys took elements of Punk Rock and made it more mainstream. Brilliant pop hit!
This was a HUGE hit back when I was in high school! Thanks Jayvee. Also check out Exile "Kiss You All Over" - really sexy song
I had no idea these guys were so great live!
