    After watching this movie, my first thought was: it's two very good film plots that were, for some reason, forced into the same movie. A disaster movie about the moon falling into the earth and a space-action movie about an AI living in the moon would both be terrific on their own. But I think by combining them into the same story, Emmerich ended up not having enough room for either plot to reach its full potential. Still a really fun movie though

    • @AdamGaffney96
      @AdamGaffney96 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree but I suppose a movie about just the moon falling almost necessitates it being a ship in some way. These movies always have to have a successful ending, and it's hard to undo the literal end of the world without keeping the moon in some way. I think that limits the possible resolutions, either a new moon being made or somehow saving the existing moon. So I think they probably did what they could but I do agree with the general point I'd have loved more time to explore both options.

      My issue with the movie was that it wasn't batshit crazy enough. Emmerich could've really gone balls-to-the-wall with this concept, but it feels restrained in a lot of ways, which I think hurts the movie. When you look at a movie like 2012, there is no restraint. Emmerich totally went for it, and it was spectacular. Ultimately, though, Moonfall gets more enjoyable with repeat viewings. I dig it.

    • @RaptorNX01
      @RaptorNX01 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      About it not being crazy enough, I do think on the AI/Hollow moon stuff he was holding back for a sequel. you want to leave stuff to do later. For the moonfall itself, I think he went about as far as he COULD go without it turning into the type of dour, depressing disaster film he's always tried to avoid. if it crashes, humanity dies and there's no point to the film. if they destroy the moon, humanity dies and there's no point to the film.
      even just crashing alone pretty much REQUIRES the hollow moon stuff. while his films are less science fiction and more science bull****, he has always TRIED to base it somewhat around logical-ish science-ish. 2012 was based around a polar and crustal shift that many people actually believed might happen on may 5th 2000 during a planetary alignment (gravitational and magnetic fields of all the major planets in the solar system combining to pull on earth's, causing the poles, and even the crust of the earth, to move). Day after tomorrow was based on actual scientific theories on what would happen if climate change caused the sea currents to stall out (and what is theorized to have caused the last ice age). but there is nothing about the moon's orbit possibly decaying (its proven fact the moon is slowly leaving orbit).
      I think in the end he went with what he did as it both sets up a franchise, and is a bit more palatable.

    I came out of this movie extremely mixed. 2012 did a reasonably good job with the b and c stories and having you care about the people involved that were being brought together. Moonfall really failed at that. I found myself wishing I could fast forward the subplots on Earth. the whole compound bit, the search for o2, just all of that. But the concept of the movie... ridiculously insane, which is what I expect and love from Emmerich. The CG teams he gets are always top notch. I actually pleasantly enjoyed the twist of this being in the middle of a war. That was legitimately a cool little twist I didn't see coming.

    I honestly can never NOT love an Emmerich disaster film. He always just goes for it in a way so few directors of this type of film does. Its crazy, and silly, and fun, and funny, and just awe inspiring with many of the shots and sequences. I also love this thru-line in all of his disaster films of either his utter contempt for, or undying love for, the Chrysler building. I honestly don't know which it is, but in every one of these films he takes great delight in destroying that one building in particular. (Maybe he played alot of Parasite Eve and that new game + messed with his head. lol)
    And while his character stuff is rarely the best, I know its there for our benefit and you need people to root for. and as said here, the actors really nail their parts.
    I do hope we get a sequel and would be curious to see how he ups the stakes. tho i suspect it'll go the way of Independence day and have this awesome set up, but never get the chance to pay it off.

      Without wanting to sound too cynical, I don't exactly think Thor: Love and Thunder "deserves" respect. It was a rough movie that wasn't made very well and there is no harm in acknowledging that.

      Thor:love and thunder, for me, was bland, full of itself, and unfunny. There were a couple great moments but the rest was unremarkable.

    • @startrekmike
      @startrekmike ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@raidenthenctzenwithinsomni4961 As I said. I don't really want to come off as one of those overly cynical internet people that just kinda hates stuff for some kind of emotional catharsis. I didn't exactly hate Thor: Love and Thunder but I also don't really think it makes a lot of sense to say it "deserves" respect. Additionally. I don't really feel the need to argue with the person making videos for this channel because I understand the point he is making with these videos and applaud it.
      Love and Thunder was a rough movie. I say this as someone who is pretty open to Marvel's offerings and tends to try to find something to like in all of them. In this case, I really struggled. I liked Christian Bale's acting and I liked some of the basic underlying ideas but the humor never seemed to land and the dialogue almost always felt extremely forced and unnatural (compared to other Marvel films and even other Thor films).
      In the end, I didn't emotionally need Thor: Love and Thunder to be good. I can accept that Marvel/Disney is occasionally going to fumble the ball and considering their track record, they are still maintaining a strong overall level of quality. Sometimes we are going to get a misstep and there is no harm in recognizing that for what it is.

      @@startrekmike Same here. I usually enjoy Marvel movies as-is, even the more controversial ones like Eternals. And I still really struggled to find much to like about Love & Thunder. I don't know what happened with that movie, but clearly something went very wrong behind the scenes. The terrible editing alone suggests big problems. Sigh.
      But as you say, no one bats a thousand. Still a shame tho. I'd really been looking forward to it.

    The thrusters on the side of the space shuttle are the ONLY way it can rotate in space without burning a lot of fuel and messing up their positioning, so they're very important even outside of an emergency. Think of the gimballed main engines as an outboard motor on a boat, whereas the reaction control system (RCS) thrusters are paddles you bring onboard so that you can spin the boat without moving around. You can make big turns with the outboard, but the paddle's good for staying still.
    ...Okay, yeah, you'd just put the motor in reverse in a boat and do a J-turn, but you can't reverse a rocket engine, so you use this instead!

    Roland Emmerich is one of those directors where if you see his name attached to a movie...you generally kind of have a good idea of what you're gonna get. For...better or worse.
    But generally if you know what you're in for and go in with that in mind and try not to take it too seriously, you're *usually* in for at the very least a fun, batshit insane time.

    I had a feeling this would be the video you made after the end teaser. I immediately said to myself that I now have a good motive to finally watch this film lol. Whilst watching it, I was just constantly telling myself how dumb it was but I loved it. My go to thought about the concept was Halo. Like seriously, it's the plot of Halo basically. The Forerunners being the ancestors and Requiem being the Moon....the actual Halo rings....lol, even mentioning Arks? But yeah, I did think of Elysium too!
    That first rock hit from the moon that hit the mountain massively missed the mark for me, the like 11.23 mark in the video. It needed a shockwave, like one of them seriously delayed shockwaves that hit the characters 5 seconds later. What makes it even weirder is that this actually happens a little later on when they are in the cabin.
    I do hope that this does actually get a sequel. John Bradley needs more love, Hollywood kinda fucked him over.
