Mom also served Sloppy Joes with sweet Bread and Butter round, flat pickle chips. Same concept. I would use them to scoop up the fallen Sloppy Joe mix. Between the salty potato chips and sweet pickles, it was a sweet and salty yummy delight.
The fact that I didn't see a SINGLE napkin, when you started, made my heart skip a beat!!! That's like shaking up a hornet's nest with no clothes on!!! That's SUPERHERO level!!! LOVE you guys...
It's so cool that you guys love sloppy joes! the difference between Hunts (Manwich) and the McCormick is that the McCormick is spicier and the Manwich is sweeter. Both very good, but in different ways. I used to make the Manwich and kick up the spice by adding some chili powder and a little hot sauce to it. Good stuff!
When I was little, I used to think my dad invented Sloopy Joe's. Then, one day at school, they were serving Sloppy Joe's for lunch, and I asked the lunch lady if she got the recipe from my dad 😂
Love your channel. Your family is blessed and highly favored. I’m a black woman from Alabama and your videos give the best insight into American culture. Food is cheap for us, so we show our love and care through food and we make a LOT of it. So, the fact that Americans that you’ve never met are so excited to feed your family gives you the absolute best insight into American culture and social norms. Because most Americans are of the mind that it costs me nothing to be kind and I may not have much else to give a stranger, but I can feed you. ❤
Like you said, food is our culture. We love pushing the boundries when it comes to food and can/will make anything we can, plus feeding others just brings joy.
even way up here in IN, at work I'll offer the younger folks, you fly I buy, Love cooking for friends and family. Food brings so many together. Constantly out of pocket for my team at work but I also feel blessed to be able to do so, or even cooking and bringing food in for the crew. We basically take turns and it's wonderful. We actually wound up with what we called a "car fund" where any change leftover from the last order was kept because nobody was worried about a few bucks and at one point almost had $70 in it last year, It's us, we gotta take care of those around us. Even if they call you dad or say your shoes are the new grill-master 5000's, all about that crew.
I have figured out why this channel warms my heart so much. It's partly a subconscious, and now conscious, comparison. Any time I hear things about my country, and by extension me as "an American", it's always negative. People really hate us, and love to make sure we know it. Some of the things I read and hear, you'd think we were a different species or something. It's really nice to see a family say 'we're not going to be like others, we build bridges not burn them'. I adore these 4 precious souls.
Actually, I highly agree with this! Upon reflection, I agree very much that there is a lot of hatred towards the states from other countries (sometimes it's not hard to see why because some of us don't like the way things are either) and this family is just so warm and loving. I love all their personalities and the family unit is just adorable!

my mom always used the McCormick spice blend when making sloppy joes. This is a classic American weeknight meal when both your parents have been working all day and they just want something easy that everyone will like. It is a common working class meal.
@@rpm371 Right I use them for everything I have the steak seasoning hamburger seasoning and several others mainly because I am to lazy to make my own spice blends specifically for steak or hamburgers.
Not true. They're usually pretty good but their FAJITA SEASONING is abysmal. Really bad. Google the recipe and make your own (the version with cornstarch). We serve our Manwich open-faced over the bun, topped with grated cheddar and chopped red onions.
I love that your daughter is doing the cooking! I wish I would have been better at letting my son take control with these kinds of things. You two are clearly really good parents.
@@Reaper20Death Central New Jersey hour to NYC or Central Philly. But I have to confess the love lightly chopped onion & green peppers is from my moms recipe from Ohio but my partner of 34 years she’s also adds it and she’s from Ocala Florida! Stay Safe Rock On!🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
PS: I love how Atlanta isn't calling it "mince" anymore, she's calling it ground beef -- which is the term most frequently used in the US. // And your son wears his Sloppy Joes very well on his chin!
Yep, young kids typically are a bit messy when it comes to a sloppy joe. That's why the name sloppy and was invented by a man named Joe. Your daughter did pretty well with the messy part.
I think I’m gonna make sloppy joe’s today, it’s been awhile. They really are an American classic. I was kind of curious how “authentic” they were gonna be. Whoever sent you that package really knocked it out of the park, good job.
Sloppy Joes are a part of every American school child's memory. Wednesdays were always "sloppy joe" day in my elementary school cafeteria, and I always looked forward them served up with sliced dill pickles and potato chips (you might call the "crisps"). I still love them to this day! It's one of the meals just about every American kid who attended public school has had. I'm glad you decided to try them. Easy to make, I know they'll be a family favorite.
P.S. All the pre-packaged and canned versions of sloppy joe mix are okay, but you can make a homemade version that's much better. Takes a little more prep time but worth the effort.
Man, I haven't had sloppy joe's in many years, and now I'm craving them. I used to have to put ruffle's potato chips on the sandwich to make it crunchy and a little pickle relish...absolutely delicious!
I grew up eating the McCormick version, but my husband insists that it smells like roadkill, lol. I switched to Manwich for the sake of my marriage and we all love it. They're extra tasty if you lightly toast the buns and add a slice of American cheese!
I agree about the toasted bun because it holds the bread together better when the sauce goes on. I like to put butter on it then toast it in the broiler.
My house growing up it was my dad who loved the McCormick version and my mom loved Manwich lol. If mom was working we got McCormick, if dad was working we got Manwich.
First off glad yall enjoyed sloppy Joe's. But my family from Atlanta Georgia ate them with a toasted buttered bun. With Dill chip pickles or spears with French fries. We preferred Manwhich brand sloppy Joe's.
I love your family. This is a refreshing break from the cruel realities of every day life. And seeing you guys react to things that most of us take for granted or don't care to notice here in the US is almost nostalgia-like.
I was thinking the same. Theyre trippin over how good Manwich is and im like thats what you eat when youre broke! Lol. We are so spoiled and dont even realise!
@@allenb7874 LOL You read my mind!! I didn't see ANYONE else commenting this!!! But it's SO TRUE!! We ate it because we were poor! It was cheap, quick, and easy! Back in the day it was a few bucks for ground beef, probably .50 for the can of Manwhich, and under a dollar for the buns... So, ya, dinner for 4 for under $10... that's why WE ate it!! 😂😆😆😂 Not to mention hamburger helper, and the dreaded tuna helper when we couldn't afford the ground beef! 😂😆😂 Thanks for your comment for making me not feel alone!! LOL (Also, I just looked it up and Manwhich has "high fructose corn syrup" which is really bad for you and unfortunately ALOT of companies put that in foods to make them taste good, but keep them cheap, which just causes poor people to eat unhealthy...😢😕😑)
I use McCormack but I don't use the directions with it, I substitute Campbell's Vegetable Soup made with beef stock, don't add the water since you already add it to the seasoning packet, and ketchup to taste, it's different and if you want you can put some nice salty chips on there instead of cheese or with cheese, your choice! Dill pickles are always nice no matter what you are serving! Chips on the side to scoop up the droppings!
These people are such a wholesome family it's refreshing to see....I think they totally have room in their heart's and home to adopt this lovely 39 year old boy I know whom is desperately in need of a family who cares!!! I think you're a perfect fit and you would just love Jason! Lmao 🤣😂
Can't leave out the onions, and a bit of brown sugar and vinegar and green pepper and often I use diced tomatoes whatever you throw at it pleasantly sticks to the ribs...... Another good way to go is just ground beef and onions seasoned only with salt and pepper, just a loose meat sandwich. An alternative to the bun, is Grandma's tater tot casserole, you just put tater tots on top of your meat mixture and brown in the oven til the tots are crispy.... Yummy
Greetings from a Texan by way of Oklahoma. After watching your blogs for several months I decided to subscribe. I enjoy watching this family. Mom, Dad you are doing such a terrific job raising the kids; so respectful. I applaud y’all. God bless, you are in my prayers and love you guys. Keep the blogs coming.
I normally add some shredded cheddar cheese to my sloppy joes. Like once you pile it up on your burger buns, then I’ll sprinkle some on top. Very very good stuff. Sloppy joes is a very nostalgic meal for me. I don’t really eat it anymore as an adult, but I don’t turn it down if a friend or family member offers me one. Good stuff guys! 🤙🏻
Yeah, I'll do it every couple of years if I'm in the mood for a simple nostalgic meal, but it's not all that common. It's not as if I dislike it, but if the craving isn't there, I look for something else.
Actually, it is kind of funny that you ranked them how you did. In my experience, here in the USA kids tend to prefer Manwich and adults tend to prefer McCormack. Those are definitely the two most popular brands. Of course, there are also variations that they all make, like "spicy", etc.
There’s a “Bold” version of Manwich with more flavor than the original that I bet Nadine might prefer. Also it wasn’t clear if you drained the grease (fat) from the meat before adding the sauce. That can also make a big difference in the flavor - too much grease can drown out the spices. By the way, Vanilla Coke is sort of hard to find even here in the US, especially over the past 2 years since a lot of ‘specialty’ sodas have been less available during the pandemic.
McCormick spices and coke regular, potato chips. You don't need a mix you can use your own spices. Manwich is not the original sloppy joe mix. It just made it easier one can not a spice mix and tomato paste and/or sauce.
@@LJBSullivan The whole expirement was to find out which one of the sloppy Joe MIXES were the best. At the beginning of the video, Sam mentioned why they weren't going to make their own from scratch. 😊
I add onions to the beef when browning. Then maybe toss in something like jalapeño peppers when mixing. Put it in a dish and cover with shredded cheese, put it in the oven for a few minutes, then serve.
It's Man-Wich, and McCormick is a national spice brand in the US. My mother would make sloppy Joes every once in a while as a kid. Mostly is she really did not want to cook that much that night.
I have had sloppy Joes my whole life. We have them for dinner with our favorite sides. Here are some suggestions: dill pickles, corn on the cob, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, french fries, fried potatoes, what ever you like.
You forgot tater tots Charlene but it's understandable food is only limited by imagination so many different ways to cook different foods steam grill fry bake saute roasting all can be used to make different foods unique and delicious so experiment everyone
Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I didn’t have “Sloppy Joe’s”, I had “hamburg barbecue.” 😂😂😂 Always homemade. Diced onion fried with the hamburger, and equal parts ketchup, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and two parts brown sugar for the sauce.
You can never go wrong with anything McCormick's! I add diced onions to my meat when I'm cooking sloppy joe & when it's cooked, I add cheese. I enjoyed watching your family eat. 😊
@@AkRenee No, I'll eat cheese burgers, but I'm appalled at our American fascination of putting cheese on everything. Cheese just shouldn't be on some things.
I have one that hates sloppy jokes too. That’s why I started using taco seasoning and tomato sauce and kerneled corn and a slice of cheddar cheese. Now when sloppy Joe is mentioned for dinner there are no complaints.
I love the fact you make a meal time a family activity. Conversing and engaging your children to promote more in depth critical thought. I just found your channel but love it!
It was fun to watch you eat those. I haven't had one in many, many years. Just FYI, McCormick is probably the biggest spice company in the US. Just about every spice in my kitchen cabinet is McCormick. So it doesn't surprise me that they would make a good spice mix for sloppy joes.
I've always used my grandma's recipe from scratch. It's a little on the sweeter side. Lots of onion, tomatoes sauce, brown sugar, touch of vinegar, tinge of dried mustard and squirt of ketchup. It's sooooo good! Potatoes chips are a must to go with it.
I totally enjoy watching your family videos. I grew up on Sloppy Joes. I love that your children are experiencing all these different foods and how they help out in the kitchen. Thank you for all the respect and love you show to the US. I'm from South Texas and I lived watching your trip to Texas.
This made me so hungry! Haven't had sloppy joes in ages. And they are so quick, easy and yummy. This was one of my 'working mother survival meals' when our girls were little because it was so quick and easy. Sloppy Joe's, spinach salad and potato chips. Our family prefered Manwich with my grandmother's homemade low sodium dill pickles.
I just found this channel. I like how the kids are treated seriously, like adults, with the same sense of fun people of all ages have. The kids are 'in the club', I guess it's the experience of a happy family. Not everyone has seen this, not me, much!
I'm late to this party, but wanted to share this. Sloppy Joe has been the basis of our family Christmas dinner for over 40 years, lol. We have always done our family gathering on Christmas Eve and my Mother long ago decided that another large family dinner so close to Thanksgiving was just too much. She would make a slow cooker of Sloppy Joe and a big bowl of coleslaw then set out buns, paper plates, plastic silverware and whatever addons that came to mind (cheese, pickles, chips, etc). Everyone else would bring an appetizer, dessert, finger food or something else to add to the table. The atmosphere is more like an indoor picnic, low stress, easygoing and easy clean up. We lost Mom on New Years Day 2020 but there's still always SJ and coleslaw in her memory. BTW, try coleslaw and sliced cheddar cheese on the sandwich. If you have leftovers, it's actually tasty over pasta for a different take on spaghetti the next day. cheers!
We also celebrate on Christmas Eve and do easy meal. Generally meatballs and/or sliced turkey brst for sanwiches, but maybe I'll change things up and do sloppy joe's nxt year!
We started a soup and sandwich tradition in 2008. We lost my father in law in March that year and we wanted to get together but keep it simple. That leaves Christmas open for those with little kids if they want to stay home or if people want to go away. I’m sorry about your mom. She sounds like a beautiful person.
Manwich isn't just a sandwich...... IT'S A MEAL LOL. That's what the old 1970's commercial used to say. Sloppy Joe's are great. We make them here at home in Florida once in a while. We just had biscuits & gravy last Sunday morning.
Exactly. Although watching other vloggers. It seems like those outside of the U.S. don't like Root beer very much ? But Yes. Root beer, potato chips, pickle with Sloppy Joe's are my favorite.
@@texasborn2720 I believe root beer is an acquired taste. I’m sure glad that I acquired that taste of root beer 🤣 And btw I can not take my thoughts of sloppy joes. I believe I’ll be making me some real soon with root beer, pickles, and salt & vinegar chips. Oh my!
Yeah you really need the salty chips and the root beer with sloppy joes. I've always eaten a family recipe. Ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar. Mix while cooking the beef to really get it in there.
Back in the 50's Sloppy Joes included finely minced onions, green pepper and celery which were coked along with the meat. Worschestershire Sauce was also included. Manwich has a lot of vinegar which I think is a bit overpowering. So I make it from scratch. With the veggies added it was really a meal. Blessings on your heads!
@Jane Daves - yes indeed! That’s the way my Mom made it. I too find the Manwich overpowering and only use that if I don’t want to go to the trouble of making it Mom’s way! 😉 And the buns should be warmed so they’re soft and not cold.
I'm not sure if this is iconic, but have you guys tried tuna casserole? 2 boxes of Kraft Mac n cheese, a 12 oz can of drained tuna, 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, 1/2-3/4 cup of sweet peas, and slice mushrooms. Baked in the oven with shredded cheese and crushed potatoes on top . The mac and cheese is cooked as the box instructions and the cream of mushroom still needs milk added, everything is mixed together. There's probably a recipe on Pinterest. 😁

Toasting the buns keeps them from getting mushy so quickly. The spice packet mixes taste too salty for me. I like Hormel's "Not-So-Sloppy-Joe" sauce the best, but also the "Manwich" sauce. Adding some ground cumin to the meat as it's browning adds a nice smoky flavor. I also like to have "Bread & Butter" pickle chips on my Sloppy Joes. 🌝
Manwich tastes really good, but I always get the Bold version. It's got extra flavor. It's the one most people prefer because there's no extra work, just dump and stir. I make them homemade, but if I'm in a pinch, always Manwich
Just had Manwich bourbon flavor the other night for the first time. Amazing flavor. It's hard to best any flavor from Manwich, regardless. Love their Bold, as well.
Ugh, manwich is ok I guess if you've never had a good homemade version. Once you do though you will never think manwich is an acceptable option for sloppy joes.
My mother made them from a recipe she found in some old magazine from the 1940's... they were based on "loose meat sandwiches" sold in Sioux City, Iowa, in the 1930s and were the creation of a cook named Joe ... there are ongoing disputes about which Joe, and where... but we made them from scratch. The canned sauce, called Manwich, didn't come out until1969, and the seasoning packets came out even later... I was a teenager by then, and didn't care much for the canned version, since we had adapted the recipe for our own family's tastes...
My mom used to do home made. She used ketchup, mustard, chili seasoning, salt, pepper. I just don't remember the portioning ratio. You could add onions. I like to add garlic salt also, but I am a big fan of garlic. That is the nice thing about it is the two main ingredients is ketchup and mustard and the spices is per your own preference. Now you can also either add cheese while heating up the sauce and melt the cheese into it or just add a slice of cheese to the sandwich if you like.
We never used garlic, and we always added onion flakes to the meat as it was browning to give it more flavor and never after the meat was already browned.
@@jeffburnham6611 Yeah well I live garlic. I put garlic salt on almost everything. Heck I even put it in the water I boil noodles in. But that is my taste. I am sure there are more safisticated recipes that use tomato paste instead of ketchup. But we were pretty poor when I was young so that was the poor person recipe.
Thanks for your comment - I PREFER yours!!! I understand how ManWich and McCormick would be "popular" - but considering they are filled with cr@ppy chemicals, I don't prefer them no matter what they taste like. Just get your taste buds used to the 'real deal' and that is what you are always happy and satisfied with. I have made this 'on my own' but also used packets of seasoning. I think I need to just get a good homemade recipe down pat! I will be looking one up - using your ingredient list!! thanks. (AGREE - Garlic is the BEST!!!) and I put garlic on/in most things too. I have some fermented garlic cloves - in apple cider vinegar - so good! Yes I have a great recipe with noodles (of any kind) mixed in with garlic cooked down in butter - with some seasonings. Yikes I am getting hungry now! Thanks again.
Of course being in the U.S. I've eaten Manwich Sloppy Joe's my whole life, and I'm almost 60, my mom used to put a slice of American Cheese on our Sloppy Joe's and the cheese would get all melty and yummy. I eat mine now as an open faced sandwich with a fork and knife, it's just easier. Here's the funny thing, I've never even realized there was a "packet" of Sloppy Joe mix by McCormick, but I'll certainly look for it and give it a try just to see what I think. Thanks for sharing the fun with us.
Instead of adding cheese to a sloppy joe (which good ones certainly do not need)... you can make a delicious and basic loosemeat hamburger sandwich with ground beef, tomato sauce, and garlic salt. On sandwiches of that, yellow mustard, onion, and pickle are excellent. You can make an easy variation by taking the basic loosemeat above and adding Italian seasonings (e.g. basil and oregano) and some dehydrated onion. Then serve *that* with cheese. Delicious sandwiches!
funny. I'm 62, and now I really like sloppy joe meat/mix on a salad...... romaine, green onions, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, grated cheddar, manwich sloppy joe meat, and blue cheese dressing....... yum.
I use either Hienz chilli sauce or Manwich bold plus I add onion and green pepper to the meat while browning then dump the sauce in after its cooked, stir and heat
Sloppy Joe's are one of my favorite meals. I add a slice of American cheese to mine. And, as someone else said, potato chips go good with Sloppy Joe's. But, I prefer some tater tots, especially if they have cajun seasoning sprinkled on top.
Yeah I'm sorry but I'm just going to have to say sloppy joes I don't care who make the ingredients or you know as long as it's got beef and a sloppy joe ingredients in it sloppy joes
WOW! Our family just finished eating our own "Manwich" sloppy joes for our meal. The kids wondered if you ever got to try them and we just looked it up and here you are. We also use bread and butter pickles. We also make our own home made french fries. I remember getting sloppy joes for school lunch about every two weeks. It was about the most favorite school lunch. They are also good mixing the beef with pork sausage.

Your videos are so much fun to watch. Homeschooling gold!! When my 5 children were young, they had friends over a lot. Sometimes 9 or 10 kids in the house and often hungry. They enjoyed making the dough, watching a movie, forming an assembly line and making 5 or 6 pizzas. We were lucky to have 2 ovens and they had a lot of fun. This is a great way for kids to learn! So much fun.
This is one of my favorite childhood meals that brings back good memories! Seeing your family work together in the kitchen is beautiful! Much love from America! ❣️❣️
Omg!! This brought back so many childhood memories for me. We had sloppy joes once a week. My mom wasn't a great cook but she tried really hard. The best thing about me I want you to see it's almost impossible to mess up so they were always delicious. Love you guys you have an amazing family
You make a good point. I think oversalting is the only way to mess up a Sloppy Joe. If it's too moist, it's going to be sloppier, and, well, it's in the name. The rest is just a very subjective selection of seasonings.
I always make my Sloppy Joes from scratch. Like the ones you get from the school cafeteria. You can find recipes for them. Should be makable in New Zealand without too much trouble.

Sloppy Joes are a quick dinner meal. Our family has used both Manwich and McCormack. We use Manwich most often. Manwich also makes a Thick and Chunky version which has chunks of tomatoes and diced green pepper and onion….and also a BOLD version which has a more spicy kick to it, if you like more spicy food. They are all good and easy to make. I buy the thick and chunky version these days. Our family has sloppy joes about every two months. We have potato chips as a side, most of the time. But sometimes we have French fries or potato salad. Do you make potato salad in NZ? Here in the US, potato salad is at every cookout or barbecue or picnic. And there are many varieties. Some people make it with mayonnaise and mustard. Some make it with just mayonnaise. Some make it with ketchup. Some make a Baked Potato version with Sour cream and bacon. There is a German potato salad, which has a sweet/sour flavor. A friend of mine makes a Deviled Egg version. So good!
My husband had a strong preference for the BOLD manwich, so that is what I always made and my kids liked it too! He also preferred the German style potato salad as that is what his Mexican mother always made. My oldest son's mother in law made deviled eggs one Thanksgiving and my husband made a real pig of himself, so I questioned him about it and he said they were the best deviled eggs he ever tasted, turns out they were totally different and had a bit of sweetness to them and my husband declared they weren't deviled eggs but angelic eggs. and that is what she now calls them.
Watching this makes me so hungry! Love sloppy joes. Ok, the pop/soda, you need to have it with a full glass of ice. For me that is the best way to drink it. You videos are so much fun to watch!
I also love to make them using taco seasoning mix, then add shredded lettuce and shredded cheddar on top, still in a bun. I call it a Sloppy Jose. Taco Bell used to sell something similar in the 1970s, called a "Bell Beefer". Very tasty. Oh, and Manwich has a bit more sweet taste, which is probably why the kids like them better. McCormick is probably the biggest name in spices here. Very good quality.
@@shootermanplus1812 Just taco seasoning. You can add some minced onion if you like, which is a good addition, just chop small and fry the onions up a little first. A little taco sauce or salsa is good if you want the meat wetter. It's all good.
Oh yeah, Bell Beefers were awesome. They sold them at least until the mid '80's here in the Detroit area. Del Taco currently sells the same thing called a "Bun Taco." I highly recommend it.
I am also a boomer mom in the USA and was raised cooking everything from scratch. I make my own version of sloppy joe and there are so many recipes out there. It tickled me to watch you and your family try our cafeteria food, for me I first had a sloppy joe in school for lunch in the cafeteria. I am interested on what food from what country you will try next. I love cooking and making dishes from around the world. It's like going on a vacation without leaving your kitchen. Thank you for such an upbeat video it really brightened my day.
One of the things I really love is how much fun you and your kids have together. All the laughter is so awesome! I wish I had grown up in a home like that!
Only one suggestion from me. Don't pour off the pickle juice, keep it refrigerated. On a hot day, it is truly refreshing and I always have some around to enjoy. As there are many varieties of pickle juices, you may find that 'Bread& Butter' suits you better than 'Kosher Dill' or other types. It doesn't take a lot, a half a shot to a shot's worth is good. It can also be used to pickle bits of veggies or eggs and so forth. Starting with something you like is always easier than never quite getting something homemade to quite suit you.
*In my family we start with Manwich as a base and we add dark chili powder & paprika to it, we also cook it with finely diced onion (or sauté on the side and then add), and we always brown our ground beef (minced meat) with HEAVY cumin spice in it... no such thing as too much cumin in ground beef. Then combine all that for the best and most out-of-this-world Sloppy Joe EVER. *Turn Atlanta loose on that job and let her work her magic - she'll knock it out of the park!
Spruce Eats has a good recipe for Chicken Fried Steak (tenderized beef breaded and fried like fried chicken). Great with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. So good.
My vote would also place McCormick above Manwich (pronounced like sandwich since you asked). However; my favorite it just to make from scratch. You don't need to to add a million different spices, just fry diced onions and burger (mince), squeeze in some ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar and you have an excellent sloppy joe. put on a bun with pickle relish and a slice of cheese, and of course, some potato chips as a side to scoop up the fallen sloppy joe. Edit; PS, cherry coke is the old soda fountain classic, where the "soda jerks" would add in a squirt or two of cherry syrup into your coke. I don't know if you've tried that yet, but i think vanilla coke came out much later.
Yes, it was cream soda, cherry, cola, vanilla etc. in soda water. You would chose from what ever flavors were available at that ice parlor. They would use these flavors in their desserts as well. 💕🙏❤️🙏
I make the same recipe for sloppy Joe's as you mentioned. Haven't bought a can of manwich in years. I just have to substitute onion powder for onions. My husband hates onions, but I've been feeding him food with onion powder in it for 20 yrs. ( I think it's a texture issue).
@@concernedcitizen1 Lol, I am picky about cheese. Never really cared for American cheese. I guess I am weird. I have a similar recipe but add paprika, onion powder and half ketchup and half barbecue sauce and mustard. Everyone goes crazy for them.
I still love sloppy joe sandwiches! I'm with Sam, choosing between McCormack and Manwich is a tough call. Just as an "FYI", some people treat sloppy joes like pork BBQ and put cole slaw ON the sandwich. It's really quite good; you might give that a try sometime. Happy New Year to everyone from Dallas! Cheers!
Loved sloppy joes as a kid.. the commercial was a sandwich is a sandwich but a man which is a meal.. also considering the box was from New Hampshire the unnamed one is stop and shop
Next time get some salty potato chips and when sloppy joe falls off of bun scrap up with chips and eat like a dip , yummy. 🤤🤗
Mom also served Sloppy Joes with sweet Bread and Butter round, flat pickle chips. Same concept. I would use them to scoop up the fallen Sloppy Joe mix. Between the salty potato chips and sweet pickles, it was a sweet and salty yummy delight.
Potato chips are good with sloppy joes. I also like potato salad with them.
This is definitely the key to sloppy joes.
Put the potato chips ON the sandwich. Also good with cheese and sliced onion.

Good stuff!
Ain't that the truth they have to be the neatest and cleanest bunch of kids I have ever seen
When I was little, I used to think my dad invented Sloopy Joe's. Then, one day at school, they were serving Sloppy Joe's for lunch, and I asked the lunch lady if she got the recipe from my dad 😂
That's freaking adorable.

That's funny.
@stephenfisher3721 The funniest part is NO my dad's name wasn't Joe. I didn't even question why he called it Sloppy Joe's 😂

Amen. In the South in particular, food is love. :)
Like you said, food is our culture. We love pushing the boundries when it comes to food and can/will make anything we can, plus feeding others just brings joy.

That’s funny we’re doing mince impressions here...
Ground beef or as is more commonly known in my area (northern NJ) simply 'chopmeat'.
I think I’m gonna make sloppy joe’s today, it’s been awhile. They really are an American classic. I was kind of curious how “authentic” they were gonna be. Whoever sent you that package really knocked it out of the park, good job.
Better than the UK man who did not have any guidance from his American friend and made them with leftover chili and BBQ sauce.
And Fridays were pizza!
At elementary school we also had tabasco vinegar. By High school Texas had shut down the tabasco farm, so I had to bring my homemade vinegar.
Man, I haven't had sloppy joe's in many years, and now I'm craving them. I used to have to put ruffle's potato chips on the sandwich to make it crunchy and a little pickle relish...absolutely delicious!

I agree about the toasted bun because it holds the bread together better when the sauce goes on. I like to put butter on it then toast it in the broiler.

Not to mention hamburger helper, and the dreaded tuna helper when we couldn't afford the ground beef! 😂😆😂
Thanks for your comment for making me not feel alone!! LOL
(Also, I just looked it up and Manwhich has "high fructose corn syrup" which is really bad for you and unfortunately ALOT of companies put that in foods to make them taste good, but keep them cheap, which just causes poor people to eat unhealthy...😢😕😑)
I love tuna helper especially the tuna tetrazzini and all my kids would eat it too!

Actually, it is kind of funny that you ranked them how you did. In my experience, here in the USA kids tend to prefer Manwich and adults tend to prefer McCormack. Those are definitely the two most popular brands. Of course, there are also variations that they all make, like "spicy", etc.
I think that's probably because Man-Wich is sweeter than McCormick.
Del monte :(
There’s a “Bold” version of Manwich with more flavor than the original that I bet Nadine might prefer.

Back in the 50's Sloppy Joes included finely minced onions, green pepper and celery which were coked along with the meat. Worschestershire Sauce was also included. Toasting the buns keeps them from getting mushy so quickly. The spice packet mixes taste too salty for me. I like Hormel's "Not-So-Sloppy-Joe" sauce the best, but also the "Manwich" sauce.
What does the "Bold" signify? It is it any way spicy? Or is it just more flavorful?
Ugh, manwich is ok I guess if you've never had a good homemade version. Once you do though you will never think manwich is an acceptable option for sloppy joes.
@@towermonkey5563, pretty simple to make from scratch. The key to a good Sloppy Joe is Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and Dijon mustard.
@@jeffburnham6611
Yeah well I live garlic. I put garlic salt on almost everything. Heck I even put it in the water I boil noodles in. But that is my taste. I am sure there are more safisticated recipes that use tomato paste instead of ketchup. But we were pretty poor when I was young so that was the poor person recipe.

I didn't know about McCormick either.
Delicious sandwiches!
funny. I'm 62, and now I really like sloppy joe meat/mix on a salad...... romaine, green onions, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, grated cheddar, manwich sloppy joe meat, and blue cheese dressing....... yum.
@@monicahamm3353 I do a taco salad with fritos and black beans and taco meat and black olives lettuce tomato cheese taco sauce. yum!
@@jovetj yes. we do that too! but there is something special about sloppy joe meat/mix!
I use either Hienz chilli sauce or Manwich bold plus I add onion and green pepper to the meat while browning then dump the sauce in after its cooked, stir and heat
I really think Atlanta should start her own cooking channel!!
I'd subscribe.
I'd sub
Heck that girl will be competing on top chef by the time she is 18 probably.
Sloppy Joe's are one of my favorite meals. I add a slice of American cheese to mine. And, as someone else said, potato chips go good with Sloppy Joe's. But, I prefer some tater tots, especially if they have cajun seasoning sprinkled on top.
Yes tater tots are the best side for Sloppy Joes
My friend makes homemade sloppy joe. Saute onions and green peppers, then add the ground beef and ketchup. It tastes so good!
Heinz 57.
Yeah I'm sorry but I'm just going to have to say sloppy joes I don't care who make the ingredients or you know as long as it's got beef and a sloppy joe ingredients in it sloppy joes
Here's another American classic simple grilled cheese with tomato soup real basic
Skip the ketchup and add a can of Ro-Tel.
Absolute childhood favorite!

So here is our “GO TO” *Sloppy Joe recipe* ... It is from the Pillsbury Cookbook from late 80’s early 90’s.
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
1 teaspoon dry mustard (in the spice isle)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
8 ounce can tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon white vinegar
6 buns (no sesame seeds)
Brown ground beef, green pepper, and onion. Drain well.
Add additional ingredients.Cover and simmer 15-20 minutes until thoroughly heated. Serve on buns.
IT REALLY IS DELICIOUS!
**From Indianapolis, Indiana**
And sometimes we add Brown sugar BBQ
That's how I make mine
I use a jar of salsa ketchup and brown sugar
Very close to my recipe which is a microwave version.
wow from a Pillsbury cookbook? Usually the brand cookbooks don't include anything that doesn't use a product from their brand.
I love how y'all enjoy each others company! That is the best thing about your videos!
I put a slice of American cheese on the bun so it melts and also a handful of potato chips! Nice quick easy meal.😋
I love watching this family interact. They are so natural and loving!
I love how you guys cooked together and just enjoy something together as a family. Vanilla cook is my favorite too lol. I love your videos guys. It’s a breath of fresh to see just family fun and nothing depressing.
The can you didn’t know was from stop & shop it’s a grocery chain in the NorthEastern and New England area here in the US where I’m from.
The wife does her own sauce. Ketchup mustard onions brown sugar. Turns out great
Much better than the can or pack.
@@sashleymo4 so true. You can tweak it to how you like it too
@@richelliott9320 I personally don’t like the canned manwich. I like a bit of sweet baby Ray’s.
@@sashleymo4 yum
This is the best recipe, IMO. Sometimes add a bit of garlic salt. Works great as taco meat or nacho meat as well.
You just made me adore your mom from how you talk about her. You're a great daughter. ❤️ Love to you and your mom both.
It's good also to cook the hamburger meat with onion. Onion is a good healthy veg with great flavor and helps the sloppy joes go farther.
I grew up with Mc Cormick’s seasoning packet but when Manwich came out my mother changed brands. I still liked McCormick’s better. 🇺🇸🌵❤️
I always make my Sloppy Joes from scratch. Like the ones you get from the school cafeteria. You can find recipes for them. Should be makable in New Zealand without too much trouble.
Nadine: "Vanilla coke is on another level". I love vanilla coke but I just got a new name for this beverage from you all: CHRISTMAS COKE!!! Enjoyed your reaction video, as well as you all enjoying a classic American meal. Keeping it going!!!
Not a big fan of vanilla coke myself but I love cherry coke maybe it's my taste buds or something it hey if you like it you do you you will receive no judgement from me over it I'm a believer in being able to enjoy what you like.
@@nateman10 We might need to watch out for that they could try to trick us I don't know if you saw this but a few years ago for the fourth of July Mt. Dew made something called Liberty Dew and I bought a 6 pack of it I couldn't even drink one of them it just had such a horrible aftertaste to me that I gave them to my cousin's kid
@@christopherbillings6294 maybe you’d like Cherry Vanilla Coke, it’s the only Coke I’ll drink. Not a big soda fan anymore but that is a great coke.
@@MasochisticMaiden I've tried it idk it just has a weird after taste to me if you like it that's ok it's just not for me
Sloppy Joes are a quick dinner meal.
Yes, definitely sweet, iced tea.
Noo bleh waters it down
I also love to make them using taco seasoning mix, then add shredded lettuce and shredded cheddar on top, still in a bun.
Add salsa and cheese dip to it with some cayenne pepper and thats how I make my favorite dip
Do you also use the Sloppy Joe mix with it? Or just the taco seasoning?
Taco seasoning and tomato sauce, basically just how the package says for tacos.
Adding pickle juice to macaroni and tuna salad or potato salad can be an amazing secret ingredient.
Freeze it... also in deviled eggs!
Would love to see a reaction to home made Southern Chicken Fried Steak with scratch made cream gravy. It's a bit of work but SO worth the effort!
Spruce Eats has a good recipe for Chicken Fried Steak (tenderized beef breaded and fried like fried chicken). Great with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. So good.
Amen to that brother! Good call 👍
agreed
You had me in your corner until you put cheese on it
@@williethomas9953 lol. The cheese is definitely optional. ;)
@@concernedcitizen1
Lol, I am picky about cheese. Never really cared for American cheese. I guess I am weird.
I have a similar recipe but add paprika, onion powder and half ketchup and half barbecue sauce and mustard. Everyone goes crazy for them.
Manwich and McCormick are my two favs as well.. You should try Dr Pepper. It's a loved soda in America..
Cheers!
That`s the way I grew up eating them and still do :)
I've always made mine homemade with ground meat, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar and onion.
I haven’t had Sloppy Joe’s in years but after watching this video I added it to my grocery list.
Loved sloppy joes as a kid.. the commercial was a sandwich is a sandwich but a man which is a meal.. also considering the box was from New Hampshire the unnamed one is stop and shop
Your family is the cutest thing I've ever seen. God bless.
