This course is fantastic!
@@guidomartin1017 Thanks ever so much Guido!
This is the most active I’ve seen Marc. He’s always so chill 😂
Probably had 3 cups of coffee
Haha yes! Indeed!
@@greganikin7003tracking not mixing!
Tracking is a different energy 😄
Looks like Marc has been on a Hollywood weekend lol.
Now this is what I'm talking about... having to make snappy decisions on the fly...!! Experience tells you what to go for... excitement allows you to push the envelope... love it!!
Well said! Thanks ever so much!
Now this is how I’ve always thought that demos and tutorials should be
Thanks ever so much
I LOVE MDN's energy!!! He's SO excited to be working alongside the legendary Ken Caillat, and their collaboration and even the playful friction is infectious - grateful for this Fly On The Wall experience! 😊 Happy I bought the course 👊🏼❤️
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
I love these "fly-on-the-wall" videos! It's almost like being there... Great studio, great people, great time.... Thank you everyone! Cheers!
Thanks ever so much Carlo!
I hope you're well!
Marc's patient 4-legged co-pilot Atticus is along for the ride too...
Amazing!
This is so awesome. I wish I had found this channel back in 1988 when I started studying studio recording. ..except that there was no Internet back then, let alone youtube. Kids today don't know how easy they have it.
1988 was easier in a lot of other ways. But yeah, recording has certainly become democratised and knowledge is a lot easier to gather. There is not as much untouched land to discover however, which is a bit boring I think.
You're very kind Patrick!
@@henrikpetersson3463 it was definitely about picturing great performances and making sure you nailed the sound in 1988!
That guitar sound was incredibly balanced with no compression or EQ. I'll keep my eye out for an ECM50
I bought them all up months ago! Interesting that Val Garay claimed to have come up with this technique on guitar and he did it on James Taylor for sure. No matter who 'invented' it, it really works great and I used it for quite a while by now. Here's a secret: Put the ECM-50 on a hi-hat. It blows away all other mics for that tasks, it's so focused, precise but never sterile.
Yes! Val Garay had me buy one about 7 or 8 years ago!
What is a good alternative to the ecm50 if you can’t find one?
@@Bradys001 I'd also like to know!
can't believe he just sits on the console like that. what a mad lad.
The way he casually sits on the console toward the end
my teletronix la2a sounds like that one, the UA reissues just dont sound the same. people always say that about gear, but this one its especially true
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Marc I am blown away with you and Ken working. Speechless man. Thanks very much and a big thanks to the PLAP team, Eric you are da man, great coverage and editing.
Marvellous! Yes, really superb Joey!
Well I know what acoustic guitar mic I’m looking for now…
Marvellous!! Thanks for sharing
The vocal bleed from the guitar mics is almost more atmospheric and appealing than the vocal mic itself 🙂Love Marc's and Ken's work 👍
The Village Recorder! What a great studio. I got to tour the studio a few years back with the Audio Engineering Society. Fleetwood Mac was using Studio D to record a new album at the time. They weren't in the studio, but Mick's Drums were all mic'ed up, and Stevie's notes werre on the music stand. We had to look through the window becase the owner didn't want anyone touching anything.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
This is fascinating!! 🫶🏼
Marvellous!!
man, I love working at the village....never been in D though...be in studio A end of April.
Marvellous! You’ll love it
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Got this course a while ago, love it! Awesome content with a couple of legends
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Oh my! That his stuff is gold to me
The old school way... The best way to record and that's it!!!
Marvellous
good i'm not the only one with noisy potentiometers and VU meters that don't move. LOL
Purchased the entire course! So worth it!🎉
Marvellous! Thanks for sharing!
Love it! I totally miss exercisng the switches on vintage equipment!
Haha I hear you! I'm still doing it! Haha
Very cool video ! Such an amazing oportunity to check how things work on a nice studio, man this DBX 160 and LA2A are super cool! API's are awesome too!
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it!
Laura T Lewis at 15:00 sounds amazing. Her particular vibrato is…beautiful. ❤
So good! Marc is my favorite 🤘
Marvellous!
Well, that was fun to watch : )
Thanks ever so much
The omni is great, there is no proximity effect. I think bill schnee also said he uses a large condenser omni on acoustic guitar in an interview with warren or rick beato: "as close as they will take it to the soundhole"
Thanks Django!
That's exactly how I mic'd my guitar (one mic only) live when I played in church in the 90s. I never liked the sound I was getting from the pickup on an acoustic
Thanks for sharing Patrick!
Respect. Awesome!
Much appreciated!
This is just awesome !!! This guys are amazing !
Thanks ever so much
A lot of moving parts to manage but the goals are simple and results great. Working engineers are used to the stress of managing time, people, and gear.
….and cameras.
Exactly! Agreed 100%! It's all part of the job!
For those Gen Z’rs that see the old guy walk in and nonchalantly dial in the acoustic guitar sound on the API while the young guy didn’t want to touch it, know that Ken Caillat is a legendary producer/engineer that you’ve probably heard and watched TikTok, Instagram and TH-cam videos with his fingerprint on them a million times.
lol the dog @10:29
Beautiful dog!
Marc seems like he is having way tooo much fun to be "at work" 🤔
great vid tho highlighting one of the best recorded and mixed albums of our time...thank you! 😁
Haha yes, he is having a lot of fun!
Already can’t find the Ecm50 😅
I bought years ago when Val Garay told me about them! He used them with James Taylor
@@Producelikeapro Haha...I bought the remaining ones last year or so and it was also because of Val Garay! The ECM 55 is also great, a bit more low end and I also got a ECM 44 which was a cheaper model is definitely less pristine but might also find its place on bright sources like mandolin.
@@andigisler Marvellous! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
What is the song the guy playing the acoustic and singing called??
Pretty sounds
Thanks Rico!
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯LOLVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT
Thanks ever so much!
It is hard to believe Dave Grohl has the Neve desk now that was then brand new when they recorded Fleetwood Mac, not because he is Dave Grohl but because imo, the music of Fleetwood Mac is timeless, and yet both recorded imensely pretty. The snare sounds on the Fleetwood Mac albums are sandy and so Neve sounding it makes my blood crawl where it can't... That is the only word I have for it, sandy... there is no desk in the world of another brand that can make Snares and music sound so rich and give it that glue that makes the band sound like they are on each others laps hahaha.
Thanks for sharing! API were the consoles they had at a the Plant in Sausalito and The Village. The Neve that Dave Grohl has is from Sound City that did many other amazing albums!
Yeah, that Neve is a magic desk and the white album of fleetwoods has a real nice sound. Rumours was on the API and the exact same as the sidecar recording the drums on this video. Pretty cool stuff!
@@marcdanielnelson317 You Rock my friend!
What a jacket!
Haha yes, indeed!
The vocal sounds distorted 💁
Laura sounds beautiful too.
Damn, I just did that on the last record i produced and thought I'd invented it, also a Sony mic.
Haha yes, been around for a few decades!
@@Producelikeapro well luckily i bought my mic before you made this video
@@iamyila haha me too!
🔥
Thanks ever so much!
They have now all been brought off of reverb lol
cool
Thanks Dan!
Just keep twiddling till it sounds ok then...;-)
Yes! The skill is knowing when to stop! Anyone can twiddle the knobs! Knowing when it sounds better is the skill!
Yo.. I hope you didn’t buy up all the Sony mics on reverb! 😆
When I interviewed Val Garay he gave away the same secret for the James Taylor guitar sound and everyone of those mics sold out! Ha
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks ever so much!
Someone is trying to steal the spotlight from Ken Caillat lol......
Very interesting and historical. But, compared to sessions i normally work it, it seemed tense and a little chaotic… and I’ve done sessions with video crews there. No one seemed like they were glad to be there except the performers.
❤😊
Thanks ever so much!
There's a very nervous sort of energy in the room, a lot of seemingly unfocused pacing around. Was there a time constraint?
It’s not nervous, it’s how pros get things done. You snowflakes have no idea.. at all.
@@leadfoot64 LOL
That Sony ECM 50 sounds terrible! Unusable without drastic EQ
Ken totally one of those grumpy old guys that you can learn a lot from, lol.
Love that channel for years, but this video is cringe as hell
How so?
@@StuffnSuch It's two wonderful people recording music together!
Using the word cringe tells me you have no clue what real work is. This is how things are done son.
what is cringey about it?
just no
Marc on Coke 😅
