i gotta say, a group of russian people doing a group call *in-game* and employing some confusing strategy, is a valve MOBA staple. it's a good sign of life for the game.

One thing I think you forgot to really mention: Deadlock is pulling people in from every category of game. Traditional MOBA players are hooked, Valorant and CS players are hooked, Overwatch and Paladins players are hooked, and even players of my main game, a dead Battle Royale, are hooked. This game is so addictive that people would abandon what they're good at just to try their hand at this amazing experience.

Its still holding upwards of 40k on the off hours, which is more then enough to support it and odds are in the future once more competitive forms are made and maybe even an item trading market. They game will be able to hold steady, and stay alive for quite a long time.

You immediately realise that Dota Brain Icefrog is involved in the development of Deadlock. Considering that the game is still in its early stages, it already feels pretty playable. Nice to see a proper in-depth "Guide" to a character, rather than a "build" video.
This video covers everything that someone wanting to learn Abrams might want - what's the best way to use your abilities, what's the most valuable thing you can do at different stages of the game, what things should you look out for that will pose a problem for you, and how do you mitigate those.
You also include a fully reasoned build, talking about the purpose of each item in the build, and why you included each item. Too many videos just say "This build does loads of damage. Do this build order for abilities and items, and go crazy", without including how to best apply them in the context of a real game.
    Great video. Liked and subbed.

I've played a lot of Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch with my group, and tried to introduce them to this game but they didn't get it and bounced off and I didn't understand why really. You described some of the things I appreciate so much about Deadlock really well, e.g. the characters are not stuck in tank/support/dps like in HotS. I def think this is less complex than Dota 2, and a bit more than HotS and Overwatch, but deep games are so much fun once you get over that initial learning! I also hope with more players the matchmaking gets better so you can introduce friends without them then getting matched around your rank. yo, big overwatch nerd here, i coach that game and our concepts of peel and zoning are extremely hero specific, and not tied to role. they're also incredibly abstract. I agree that it doesnt transfer perfectly but some abilities like paradox wall and mo kril unburrow are almost 1-to-1 mirrors of abilities that we assign that macro function in overwatch. I think there's a LOT of potential for deliberate isolation and peel in deadlock, at least in fights, and we just havent really started to explore it yet. In ow it took a good year or two for those ideas to get fleshed out, and i think that's gonna be true for deadlock too. hope u see this and find it interesting!

I personally always liked being a jack of all trades in games, the problem always is ther nobody likes it when you aren't in a specific roll.
In deadlock it kinda works with Seven and infernus.
Seven can slow, stun, reduce spirit resist and has a potential teamfight carring ult. So with the right items he can do "everything"
Infernus isn't that much the case but with the right items he can do it also kinda good. Slow on 1, engage with flame dash + ult, 3 for dot, reduce spirit damage. With inhibitor you reduce their damage even more and with ricocchet you can spread it. With leech and resistence items you can also become very tanky!

Also: your videos on Deadlock are *great* so I hope you keep on keeping on. I wouldn't worry about the player drop off at this point - it's natural. Hell we should take a look at DOTA 2 and CSGO's early time player numbers, especially CSGO is a bit of a exception that proves the rule kinda deal. People generally love the game, but there's always an initial burst of players that try it out due to hype, realize that they can't stand MOBA-ish games and back off after a bit. It's the slow *growth* up until launch that Valve should be aiming for imho :p Just like they did with CS back then.

I'm pretty high rank in overwatch. Have been gm. I think you described why tank works in ow pretty decently. It is true that because the game is about 1 objective at any given time, everyone is forced to go through a tank in some way.
Tanks either take advantage of the fact that you have to touch point and kill/force cooldowns of those that DON'T want to be on point. IE: Ball and Doomfist don't really want to hold point, but they usually go for people rotating to point.
While characters like Rein or Orisa will stop people from getting to point or stop them from going to a position to fight for point optimally or can just force the point themselves.
The biggest difference, imo is the multiple points. If you were forced to fight over one objective like in overwatch, tanky characters would be far more powerful. But in deadlock there are a dozen viable things that every member of a team can be doing at any one time. You just aren't forced to "get through" the tank. Therefore the idea of tank is a lot more fluid.
Tanking in deadlock is more about engaging imo. Which IS similar to overwatch, but the way you engage is very different and you can tank without being a fat boy with a lot of hp.

    • @KoolAidManOG
      @KoolAidManOG หลายเดือนก่อน

Solid explanation. The thing he misses because he hasn't played OW is that the different modes don't have a cart, but they do all force fights around changing objectives. Same intent either way!

Really hoping we don't see power creep become an issue with the game in the future.

I feel the same way about Kelvin that you do for Abrams. I feel like no other character really slots into the pure support role quite like Kelvin, and so I have almost zero interest in other characters. When I do branch out and play Mo and Krill, Dynamo, Viscous, etc. I just play them as damage dealers, and typically have a lot less fun, even when I do well.
Very frustrating because I have a friend with thousands of hours in DOTA 2 who constantly plays with me, but shames me for "maining" and tells me I'll never be good until I learn how to play the whole roster. I simply don't want to play characters like Wraith, Infernus, etc. It's not that I disagree with him, but that I don't have fun playing them.
Really hoping we get more characters who naturally fill that support shaped void in the cast, because gun Dynamo and spirit Ivy really are just better than whatever support build you might try to force.

The really striking thing for me is how full of depth and surprise this game is. Ex: Ive had times where while playing as gheist 3-4 players will jump on me. I'll think "There's no way I'm getting out of this," and then ill heal like maniac, kill 2 heros, and still slip out!

ExOW player that moved to Deadlock here. Man I wish the part where you said "tanks and healers get value because dps stays close to them" is true XD So many dps spam need healing when they're across the map behind 4 walls lmaoooo There is a "frontline" and "backline" but it's constantly moving and shifting so much due to the objective, map design and hero specific abilities that it becomes rather hard to pin point. OW is really distinct in that regard. That being said, I love the vid! Keep it up!

Yess! upgraded abrams guide! You are my fav deadlock youtuber! And i was playing abrams before even watching you and you opened my third eye without the Patreons help. Now i wanna double down on abrams.
i think the game is hella fun and even tho valve tends to treat their existing games in a bad way (like cs and tf, as a cs2 player mainly im very annoyed, im hoping its because just like this game is more fun to play, its also more fun for the whole company to work on...), they might have a keen eye on mobas. Deadlock is the future of mobas. They are cooking here, im optimistic!

    •  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

Once they release the game from closed alpha or whatever this is, theres gonna be more content (at least I hope, the only content in cs2 is a cashgrab update, we still dont even have achievements lol) I'm also hoping they will do something with counter strike once deadlock is in a somewhat finished state but if we're being honest the way they can keep it alive is by never really finishing it...

I love the fact it dos not have side content for now. To game modes, no monetisation or anything. Just the game. That is really rare recently, even more in multiplayer games. I don't expect it to stay this way but I'll enjoy it for as long as I can.

I personally only have 84 hours, but I still learn a lot each day playing the game and that's what makes it very fun to me. I'm able to queue as a bunch of characters I enjoy and let the game decide, try different builds to see what I enjoy, learn better routes via movement and jungle timers. The item shop is fun to figure out what counters specific characters and what works with the characters I play. I've never really enjoyed MOBAs that much, but it's really fun.

Saw this game when my laptop went bye bye (about one and a half months ago) and only have my new PC now for 5 days. Already locked in 20+ hours in this game and I swear it's so good. And I agree with your points. Especially the goofy one, even in my twenty hours as a very serious competetive player, I accidentily created moments that made me and my friends laugh out loud. And it's crazy to me how good this game feels. Tho I currently struggle to be efficient on the map at all, cause my League of Legends brain isn't braining well for this game, I love every game. I really hope this sticks cause I am having a blast I've not had with a game since years.

been playing for a little over a month now and i gotta say this game has me by the balls lmao i love everything about it and its so refreshing that the game is constantly updated literally multiple updates every single day which cant be said about games like overwatch or fortnite. also seems like the devs care about balance and make sensible decisions with it instead of not listening to community members and going the blizzard route with it by basically telling their player base " we know better than you we are the devs" i cant wait to see where this game goes and im here for the long haul!!

About the OW part (12:50 give or take) you're half right. DPS in OW can flank and snipe a bit more freely than on Deadlock, where some heroes/characters (in OW) HAVE to play that style to gain value. OW is solely focused on the PvP aspect since there is no Minions/NPCs.

Enjoyed the video and agree, the game is still super fun for me at least. The first of your points was funny though, because it's basically just you getting excited because it's like Dota. Extreme customizability? Every hero being unique? Not having traditional tank/DPS/healer roles? I would hesitate to call those "traditional moba roles" because, because Dota WAS the first moba and didn't use them. It was other games that shoved in MMORPG-style roles into the moba format.
Dota has a notion of carry or support, but it's a spectrum based on farm priority, from 1 (hard carry, top priority) to 5 (hard support, lowest priority). The same hero can be played as position 1 or 5, or transition from hard support early to carrying later depending on how the game goes. Specific hero examples of that are Alchemist and Naga. At least in the past, I'm not up-to-date.
Deadlock takes a lot of the best moba ideas from Dota, but also introduces a ton of new ideas/mechanics with it being a 3D-movement-shooter. For a surprisingly great result.

The fact it’s a game by valve gives me confidence it will trend up. I’m having tons of fun and the movement depth / baseline skill expression is the main issue I had with league.
The movement mechanics are good enough to gap players worse than you even if they’re up a bit of souls. I love a lot of the decision making they did for the fundamentals of this moba

Your perspective is interesting with what 2 games you compare it too. See I love the game because I love overwatch and smite, and even though the gameplay is more like the division compared to OW, I like the "hero" aspect of the game, lots of unique characters with unique abilities and alright balancing so far and I can't stand OW anymore so I'm just so happy this game is doing well I really love it 😢

I’m near 200 hours and having an absolute blast but I agree with your point that it will decline likely because others (and maybe myself) will fall off before main release. The constant updates have kept the games refreshing tbh, but I do hope they end up adding a Joust/3v3 game mode simply to have a change of literal pace in the game. With regular matches taking anywhere from 30-50 mins, a shorter game mode would be personally nice for when I get on discord and the fellas are 10 mins into a game lol

For me deadlock perfectly solves the issues i had with games like tf2, overwatch and lol, in tf2 and ow2 i never liked the game modes like pushing the cart, capture the flag or whatever and lol became too sweaty for me with every champion able to one shot each other. Deadlock just hits the sweet spot with game mode i like and combat based on exchange of combos instead of one shoting enemy from the bush
