  • Improving Oxygenation through Breathing Exercise.
In these times when oxygen saturation is an important parameter to be monitored for COVID patients, this is a simple breathing exercise which can improve oxygenation for patients with mild COVID infection.
Our lower lungs are rich in the number of alveoli also known as air sacs. Alveoli are helpful in exchanging of oxygen from our lungs to our blood. Through the thin lining of the alveoli and the capillaries surrounding it, oxygen from inhaled air enters our circulatory system and carbon dioxide escapes with the exhaled air.
Through a simple use of a towel, this exercise helps provide an input to the brain to increase the expansion of our lower lobes of the lungs. This exercise helps to inflate the lower lungs better, thereby improving ventilation which in turn increases oxygenation.

During inhaling, are we supposed to expand our belly or not?

Namaste. As you inhale, the lungs, ribs and stomach all expand. As you breathe out, these contract. Keep this movement naturally as you inhale and exhale. Hope this helps, thank you.
