Many people think they need to upgrade to a professional horn to sound good. I think a high quality student instrument can take most people through the first several years of playing, and I've even played gigs on this student Buescher in a pinch. The Mark VI is commonly seen as a "legendary" instrument, but at the end of the day, the person playing the saxophone is what makes it sound good or bad.

At the pro end of things, tho, the choices of your colleagues do influence their opinions of you. If Selmer et al suit you, you're more likely to suit them. If Buescher et al suit you, there _may_ be a question. Even if you have a horn that was considered a pro sax back in the day - there's a judgment of present day practice implied in that.
If you bring a loaner student Buescher to a gig, that's one thing. If you bring a 1936 Aristocrat to _every_ gig, that's quite another. Maybe even a thing above and beyond your playing. Like: who are your teachers? who are your idols? whom do you respect among your peers? are you schooled or self-taught? what does "pro" mean to you?

For sure. There are a lot of stereotypes and history. Too bad we can't just focus fully on the music people play
