Compared to my jool mission that couldn't even get off the ground, I'm amazed by the incredibly low mass of the craft, the masterful manuevers with minimal, hell, only double digits of Delta V to spare, and the no RCS docking, with minimal engine use. It's incredible how you pulled this off, and the craft looks fantastic. Very well done! I love it!

    FINALLY a KSP hot shot uses the Laythe assist injection maneuver! It's been standard practice at my space program ever since the first successful mission to Jool(it was almost a failure due to low fuel, but one of the more insane engineers planed a slingshot off of Laythe to inject with minimal delta-v expenditure. It worked, and the maneuver has since become the standard way to inject spacecraft into the Joolian moon system.

    You blow my mind with every new video. The incredibly precise gravity assists and vessel performance are amazing. The dedication to attempt these missions and the time they take to produce must be absurd. How do you even plan stuff like this?

    • @Stratzenblitz75
      @Stratzenblitz75  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! To plan this, I broke down the mission into more manageable pieces and worked my way from the top down. First, I built the Tylo lander + tylo transfer tank because I knew the Tylo landing would be the most difficult. Once that was done, I calculated the fuel needed for the laythe section, then the vall lander, and so on. Once I had all the Jool-5 landers built, then I built the mother-ship to carry them and the fuel they would need (+ some more fuel for maneuvering. This was just an estimate).
      Basically, if you have a complex mission that you want to complete, break it down into parts. Complete the parts that don't rely on other components first and work your way down. (For example, build the landers first, not the mothership. If you build the latter first, you might discover that the lander is too heavy for the mothership and then you'll have to redesign the mothership.)

      Not the above guy, but am I correct in understanding that:
      At 0:57 you separate the parachute from the lifter and catch it with the other end of the ship? (did it not fit on the ship from the start? or why did you have to do that?)
      At 1:16 you finished your ejection burn with an escape trajectory that included mun gravity assist, then at 1:23, you separate the 7stack tank with just enough fuel to turn that mun assist into gravity brake, and to aerobrake and rendezvous with the lifter's cover.
      Then, did you burn farther than the map view showed at 1:17? It looked like your solar orbit was pretty much Kerbin orbit, then you separate, and next time we see map view at 1:53, your solar orbit is near Eve encounter with nearly full fuel
      Maybe I'm just slow, but it took quite a bit of repeat to figure out the booster recovery bit and I think someone with less patience might miss such things :)

      Thanks for the feedback! This was a complex mission profile and I see I could have communicated it better. To address your questions"
      1. The fairing was attached to the top of the craft, so I could not put the parachute there. Thus, I needed to put the parachute module inside and then dock it to the craft after the fairing was separated. I'll admit, this was not a clever design choice: for the craft download, I simply put the parachute on the Tylo lander so you don't have to do all this shuffling. I wish I had recognized this and fixed it from the start.
      2. This is a "bug" with the stock patched conics. For some reason, it does not show more than 1 encounter in the map view, so when I set up my mun encounter, it does not display the resulting solar orbit. Had the orbit been displayed correctly, it would have intersected Eve. I should have fixed this with precise node, but unfortunately, I did not notice it when editing.
      I'm going to release a full commentary for this mission soon that should cover all of the specifics of the mission.

    I'm not 100% if this is still true, but at one time you could get more length per unit mass (for the spinal truss, there) using emptied size zero fuel tanks. However, considering the bulk of the badassery on display is in the landers and the flying/flight planning, I'm not sure that'd really gain you much.
    I love the cheeky tossing around of that parachute, though. That's just amusing.

    • @Stratzenblitz75
      @Stratzenblitz75  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!
      It doesn't seem true anymore. An empty MK0 tank has a mass of 25 kg, whereas the truss segments have a mass of 1 kg.
      There is another way to build a mass-efficient spine though: use octagonal struts linked side-by-side. The octagonal struts have the same mass as the cubic struts but they are about 2x wider than the cubic struts are long.
      Had I arranged the docking ports in a different way, I could have eliminated the spine entirely. But, the spine does not contribute much mass and makes the craft look much better so I decided to go with it.

    I wish I could afford the highest patreon you have. Like, 5 times over. Because damn. This was insanely amazing! How long did it take to push the crafts together like that? Last time I tried pushing a craft I got irritated and "poof"ed my Kerbal on the side of it.

    • @Stratzenblitz75
      @Stratzenblitz75  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      It was a very tedious process to push the crafts together. I don't know how long it took, but it took quite a long time.
      The funny thing is that I wanted to dock ALL of the modules with the kerbal. However, one practice run convinced me to put RCS thrusters on the mothership so I wouldn't have to do that.
