The thing about Fantasy Battles to me is that they captured the idea of playing a wargame where every battle feels like it belongs on a Metal Album Cover where everything has personality and you can tell what faction was what.
Yeah I prefer their older sculpting in both fantasy and 40k. It seems they are more going for realism now. Not saying their new stuff is bad, but it just doesn't hit me the same way those old models did. I guess nostalgia plays a role too though
You hit the nail on the head when you said charm and character even if you feel those words don’t hold any meaning. The new models are amazing, but I won’t remember them. They’re not particularly fun, I don’t get the same sense of joy and I don’t believe that’s because I’m an adult now. I think it’s the same with many things, it’s why people prefer classic cars, or 80’s movies. Yeah the new shiny thing is technically better, probably more reliable etc. they have no charm or character. It just doesn’t hit in the same way. There’s no journey in new shiny things because they mostly work, old Warhammer, old films, old cars, they were clunky. You would work your hands raw getting stuff to work and you’d swear through gritted teeth. There’s a real hands on and tangible experience you got with those things that you don’t really get now. Yes WH is still hands on, but your tools are better made, you have adult strength to open paint bottles, you follow instructions and build correctly. The journey is there but it’s different. And the end product is generally just a bit meh. Whereas a wonky as fuck dragon hopping off a stone, probably toppling over constantly, big gaps between its joints, stuck together with green stuff and nothing else because you’ve got no idea what you’re doing, that end result is fucking rad and you loved every second of it even when it drove you mad.
My favourite was Galrauch the chaos dragon. I also went through a phase when I was using it as a Tyranid bio-titan and had venom cannons glued to his back. The bio-titan at the time had no official model and the rules for creating your own were released in a white dwarf magazine.
Wonderful choices! I definitely miss the look and feel of The World that Was. I have high hopes for The Old World. Fingers crossed it brings a heavy dose of nostalgia.
A lot of the old Regiments of Renown are ones that I would love to get, but they're exceedingly expensive. I also keep hunting for a decently priced set of Empire Duelists, both of those looked cool and I just wanted them
I’ve sniped a few bulk lot of metal fantasy models with many regiments of renown in them ! I’ve resold just the squads of those for more then the bulk bids
I love Oldhammer idea, but at the same time with current GW pricing I find it rather hard to pull off. Unless you go for alternative 3D prints of course. Rulebooks will sell for sure, armies... it really depends how GW handles it.
For me it is the older Warhammer Fantasy models that I feel really nostalgic about - 90s 5th edition High Elves, Bretonnians, Orcs and Goblins, Dark Elves etc - were truly glorious
What??? Fuck me. I know I haven't collected in over 18 years but Jesus wept. I only stopped cause my parents couldn't justify the prices for small bits of plastic :(
I recently picked up an old Warhammer Fantasy Battles 4th ed (which was the edition that made me fall in love with Warhammer years back.) It was a crazy nostalgia rush, as was this video, cheers Jay. I definitely would love to paint some Bretonnians when they do eventually release the Old World.
Just FYI, RPE (Ral Partha Europe) stocks the amazing range of Demonworld figures in 15mm. Sculpted by the phenomenal Werner Klocke, the figures are very much like a 15mm WFB. I could recommend a couple of rules systems, or use whichever rules system you want (maybe even Demonworld, lol), or 1/2 scale WFB if you preferred. You could easily get lost in the sauce buying one of every army, they are gorgeous minis... much less expensive than GW, and possibly easier (or tougher) to paint @ 15. Definitely check those out!
After seeing your video I went straight into eBay and found a louen leoncour figure on hippogryh . I can't wait for it to arrive so I can repaint it . What an awesome figure . Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I had never seen it before 😉
I have an unnasembled high elf lord on dragon sitting on the shelf behind me from when I was a kid! I'm saving it for when I want to dive into something really special :D
Even if they never bring Felix back into the stories I'd love to see a mini for him made that just gets called something like warrior poet or aspiring writer that you can throw into a list next to gotrek
I love how the bretonias being normal in a world that is just not t serves for that juspgtion you want and gives hhistorical wargamers a faction to play.
I am so unbelievablely happy they still sell Phoenix Gaurd from fantasy in Aos. Many years ago when I was a young lad, I picked up a warhammer fantasy army book at a garage sale because it looked cool and Asyuran's warrior monks were the nail in the coffin that sealed my fate as a total elven fan boy. But I miss Archaon, and Malikith and a bunch of cool characters.
Way back when in the 90's I got into Warhammer fantasy and I'm still salty about AOS, so if and when the old world comes back it just might be the moment when I hop back into the hobby. I'd love me some tomb kings.
Interestingly enough, the old plastic bretonnian knights (as well as the enpire plastic knights) have a large variety of bitz that fit onto space marines for some fun kitbashes
I played 6th edition back in the day. Then dropped off from wargaming until starting 40k in 2021. Kinda cool that they're bringing back square bases. I had high elf dragon with a rider, but it was not the same model you started this video with. Maybe it was an earlier kit 🤔 EDIT: Searched around a bit and what I had was Prince Imrik!
Holy crap, you awakened some deep, buried memories with that off-hand Galidor remark. It's like Lego wanted to get in on the action figure market, but couldn't entirely figure out how to make them Lego-compatible
All the WFB Elves are great im so glad I do have 3 of those High Elven dragons 🥰 Rumour has it that many of those old plastics might be coming back for Old World.
I own a warsphinx from WHFB and used the spare parts of the necrosphinx to build my own hierotitan because this unit never got a model. Still regretting to not have bought a second sphinx that one day I was standing in the local game store. I really hope GW brings the kit back.
Island of blood was my first box with a buddy. And so started a trend of being a Skaven player... catching fire, doom wheels getting stuck in forests doing 3.1 turns... I don't actually miss old Fantasy and much prefer AOS - but the old models yeah, agree. Some classic stuff.
When I played 40k in the *cough* 90s *cough* I used to love looking at the Warhammer miniatures in my nearest Games Workshop as there were some real fun little miniatures (Skaven, I'm looking at you), even more so when it was just a metal mini in a blister pack that you had to guess what it'd look like. Never played WFB but liked watching other people playing it in GW and am looking forward to see what comes next for it. Though if the question about Battlefleet Gothic on socials the other day was an indicator it might be a new lot of little ships for my existing chaos fleet to go up against
There's something over the top, almost cartoonish, trippy, super old school high fantasy about all these models. I think when Warhammer Fantasy started, they were reacting to the existing field of wargames, which were all about historical accuracy and realism, making proper proportions and historically accurate weapons and outfits fundamental. I love it that old school Warhammer Fantasy seems to really have said: F that, we're doing HIGH Fantasy, elves, goblins, fairies, wizards and demons.. and stylistically focused on things that just visually just *pop* when you look at them from a distance on a battlefield. The painting style also was super bright, intense colors.. not realistic or 'grimdark' but visually stunning. When I see photos of armies in the old issues of White Dwarf I'm still drooling as if I am that kid again, 25+ years ago. I really miss that period of Warhammer.
I have find memories about those Bretonnian knights. I had the Warhammer starter box with the Lizardmen and the Bretonnians in it. I ended up trading the Bretonnians for Orcs and Goblins. Currently pretty tempted by the Conquest first blood 100 kingdoms because of those knight models
First thing, today we have Wood elves as not so cool spirits of the wonderlands aka Sylvaneth + cities of sigmar where the bulk of old WE was before they started to cancel them not so long ago. The Dragon Princes was a cool piece and like the Dragon they warent so old, now when they would remake those, the minis would be bigger and more detailed, the technology can make those details with less space so It wouldnt look so cartoonish like the older models and those armors are truly how you imagine grand elves would wear to war showing off :D
I love my Warhammer Fantasy, it will always have a soft spot in my heart. I have around 4500 points of an all metal Dark Elves army from as early as Marauder.
16:30 In my opinion, once old world (warhammer) re-launches, it's going to Eclipse Age of Sigmar in popularity. I could be out of touch though, but Total War Warhammer has done amazing things for the popularity of the world, meanwhile next to nobody knows anything about Sigmar except for the very specific people playing it.
Wood elf 'dragon' was good not because of the dragon model. Snake-dragon is not obviously hooking model, but Sisters of Twilight... Their legend is beautiful and dramatic, their concept is amazing. It is not just another Chaos champion who goes forward, kills everyone, ..., profit. Really good looking wood elven mini was the highborn with two-handed sword. Simple infantry hero nevertheless he was handsome. His contemptuous glance told us 'yeah, I'm an elf, I'm highborn. Who are you, mortal?'
Have you seen how big a warhorse would have to be in order to carry a fully armored knight on its back along tack, saddle, and barding? Three grown men can stand in a line next to a horse and take up roughly the same space on the ground as the horse. The warhorse was most likely around the same size as a Clydesdale, possibly larger, and those are massive.
I have a sweet spot in my heart for the old world and love Total Warhammer. I really hope they deliver some great new models when they eventually release the game
sisters of twilight on forest dragon on the cover of a white dwarf sitting on the rack at barnes and noble was what got me into miniatures. i bought that white dwarf and the rest is history. I ended up not getting that model or even getting into fantasy mostly cause it was all 40k at the game store. I quickly found the Tau Battlesuits and Firewarriors, and cut my wargaming teeth with 4 edition tau....
I'd love to know where you found all the pictures used for this video? I'd really like to go back and browse a tonne of the old models to spark my childhood memories!
Ok a few terms you used quite wrong: Renaissance: Describes the Period between the 15th to 17th century, the beginning of the historical categorisatoin "early modern age". Bretonia is representing arthurian and grail legends, wich peak around 12th and 14th century. This era is the "High Medival Period" and the "Late Medival Period". The Empire under Karl Franz on the other hand is definitly 16-17th century (renaissance / early modern) germany at the End of the Maximilan Period (overlap of late medival and early modern age). Btw the "soulblight gravelords" skeletons and grave guard are from around 2007 and have been released years ahead of the newer tomb kings miniatures as part of the 7th Edition release for vampire counts, together with the Vargulf, Ghouls, the now finecast Vampire Lords and no longer availible Blood Knight miniatures made from metal.
Speaking of dragons, I wish GW will release a succesor model to Galrauch, the two headead chaos dragon of old. My best option now is to do unspeakable things to Krondys and Karazai...
I knew that the Necrosphinx would be on this list 🤣 I really wish I'd kept in the hobby when Tomb King's got their 2nd army book as I would have nabbed that. Though, don't give me hope that they'd re-release it for The Old World...
I came back to the hobby when fantasy was just discontinued and I played 8th Ed until I discovered the ninth age. It’s freaking awesome and keeps fantasy alive as GW should have.
I will forever regret that I never got a box of Bretonian Men at Arms. Never got the shaggy dog and snail bits. I used to try and collect all the little critters like the Fanatic Beetle, Powder Keg monkey, etc. That Wood Elf dragon is the second version of it after they added the forest spirits and new characters. Mine was stolen from my car with a bunch of other kits after I was paid in models for painting the murals on the walls at DakkaDakka.
I still have my Bretonnian army, waiting for GW to maybe bring them back in the old world (yeah right...) but the nice thing with those knight is you want every knight to be ''unique'' they are all lord of their own, so they cannot all bear the same color. Personnaly I took 5 color and mix 2 color on each knight, so i have a lot of combination of color combo
Those resculpts of the dragon princes were pretty nice compared to the more static older versions also the older ones were done in a red scheme. Lore wise the goofiness made sense as they were paying tribute to when the used to actually ride dragons around.
I think that we Bretonnian players generally just want them as they are; though perhaps a bit 'normal' or dull to others, its important to remember what drew us to them in the first place, so changing them too much would not go over well.
Shouldn't have ever got rid of WHFB in my opinion. Can't build my armies up anymore and with AoS they've slowly killing Warhammer. Warhammer Fantasy was where it's at. I miss my beloved Tomb Kings and I doubt they'll get brought out again under Warhammer:The Old World later this year.
Oldhammer skeletons weren't scooby doo, they were Jason and the Argonauts stop-motion skeletons! Pretty neat, but kinda derpy and plain compared to the AoS offerings now. I will admit I like vanilla flavours in my Fantasy miniatures game, the generic knights and basic skeletons win out for me (those new skeletons that take bone tithes? Yeah, they don't mustard my sandwich).
I have every model on that list but the necrosphynx, and was sad twice if not three times 😂 I played high elves and wood elves back in whfb, and came back to the hobby with age of sigmar to find they ended the world. Started order draconis then (all dragon princes and lord's on dragon) as a passion project but they then discontinued faction support. I was devasted. Flash forward to now, I am one month in to my 12 month no-buy challenge and keeping a book of everything I cover. My order draconis will be finished and proudly displayed in my cabinets or taken out to play against newer players to aos who want a win. You forgot to list imrik on minaithnir too! His old-old model I believe inspired the newer dragon prince designs
I'm excited for the Old World. I tried my best to play Age of Sigmar, but it just felt like playing 40k and I'd rather play a shooty army than a fighty army with those rules. I want a game that's different enough to be worth playing.
my possibly unpopular opinion: We use to play all day long garage games, and movement trays were a no go. They created unnavigable artificial borders around and behind units, particularly those who took casualties. Reforming the unit was left behind due to incompatibility with the trays, and the ability of a unit of models to physically mount a hill or wood went away. Sure, when you're meeting up with strangers at a store, time is precious. At home, no trays.

This channel is just such good vibes. I don't even play warhammer and watch these vids.
A lot of the old Regiments of Renown are ones that I would love to get, but they're exceedingly expensive.
I also keep hunting for a decently priced set of Empire Duelists, both of those looked cool and I just wanted them
I'd love to own some slayer pirates
I’ve sniped a few bulk lot of metal fantasy models with many regiments of renown in them ! I’ve resold just the squads of those for more then the bulk bids
And here I am wondering ... HOW ... could you miss the Necrosphinx! And then you bring it! Best Fantasymodel ever made.
I especially am sad that GW discontinued Galidor 😢 I especially loved the box set that came with Legolas
What??? Fuck me. I know I haven't collected in over 18 years but Jesus wept. I only stopped cause my parents couldn't justify the prices for small bits of plastic :(
Excellent video thank you! :) So much nostalgia. I have Louen on Griffin. Such a cool model
I recently picked up an old Warhammer Fantasy Battles 4th ed (which was the edition that made me fall in love with Warhammer years back.)
It was a crazy nostalgia rush, as was this video, cheers Jay.
Definitely check those out!
you learned to pronounce Soulblight Gravelords! Well done! Although i still hear "bleep bloop bleep blods" whenever i see it written
After seeing your video I went straight into eBay and found a louen leoncour figure on hippogryh . I can't wait for it to arrive so I can repaint it . What an awesome figure . Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I had never seen it before 😉
5:30 yeah I loved all the scenes with Legolas in Star Wars the phantom menace 😂
The Bretonians had lots of high fantsy. AND you were to paint them all different, and Cav army is SO fun.
I have an unnasembled high elf lord on dragon sitting on the shelf behind me from when I was a kid! I'm saving it for when I want to dive into something really special :D
I love the High Elf on Dragon; I have two in my collection; both converted to be used in AoS.
I'm sad they got rid of Felix. Gotrek is a boss, yeah, but damn. Why'd they do my boy Felix Jaeger like that?
Even if they never bring Felix back into the stories I'd love to see a mini for him made that just gets called something like warrior poet or aspiring writer that you can throw into a list next to gotrek
I reckon they're saving him for making a comeback.. he'd definitely be Stormcast material for the host made up of folks from The Old World!
You can still play 6th edition!
i did the same thing after the End Time i basically moved to 40K as a refugee
@@michael3088 Trust me, if you want you can still play 6th edition. Even there are plenty of tournaments everywhere
Holy crap, you awakened some deep, buried memories with that off-hand Galidor remark. It's like Lego wanted to get in on the action figure market, but couldn't entirely figure out how to make them Lego-compatible
All the WFB Elves are great im so glad I do have 3 of those High Elven dragons 🥰
Rumour has it that many of those old plastics might be coming back for Old World.
Though if the question about Battlefleet Gothic on socials the other day was an indicator it might be a new lot of little ships for my existing chaos fleet to go up against
agree on the tomb kings. the really good tk models made me want the whole army just because the cool models in the line were so good.
Need a part 2 of this! I'm shocked the lothern skycutter didn't make the list!
"Legolas in star wars the phantom menace" at @ 5:35 gave me a twitching eye...
Two things that can get your juices flowing with stuff like this: 3d printing and Warmaster: Revolution.
I grew up with those old snake dragons. I’m actively looking for a couple to add to my collection
I love my Warhammer Fantasy, it will always have a soft spot in my heart. I have around 4500 points of an all metal Dark Elves army from as early as Marauder.
16:30
In my opinion, once old world (warhammer) re-launches, it's going to Eclipse Age of Sigmar in popularity. I could be out of touch though, but Total War Warhammer has done amazing things for the popularity of the world, meanwhile next to nobody knows anything about Sigmar except for the very specific people playing it.
Wasn't the last version of LeoLeo on a hippogriff?
Bretonnian kaniggits were about 300 years pre-Renaissance.
Normal is good!
Excellent video.
👍🎅👍
Ok a few terms you used quite wrong:
Renaissance: Describes the Period between the 15th to 17th century, the beginning of the historical categorisatoin "early modern age".
I happen to have a sphinx kit that I'm wanting to sell, though I guess transatlantic shipping may be prohibitive?
Speaking of dragons, I wish GW will release a succesor model to Galrauch, the two headead chaos dragon of old. My best option now is to do unspeakable things to Krondys and Karazai...
Egrimm Van Horstmann is my current project with one of my Krondys', Prince Imrik is my other.
I knew that the Necrosphinx would be on this list 🤣 I really wish I'd kept in the hobby when Tomb King's got their 2nd army book as I would have nabbed that.
Though, don't give me hope that they'd re-release it for The Old World...
they definitely will, tomb kings are a fan favorite and confirmed for old world.
@@ce5122 Brilliant 👍 at least I've got time to save up with the game not likely hitting till 2024 at the earliest
Prince Imrik model is the thing that got me into table top games. Great silly dragon
Where do you source the images of these out of print models?
I came back to the hobby when fantasy was just discontinued and I played 8th Ed until I discovered the ninth age. It’s freaking awesome and keeps fantasy alive as GW should have.
I wonder if the return of old world might also lead to a revival of mordheim?
Schaffers Last Chancers were a fun unit with awesome books.
I got home, put this on, and promptly fell asleep with messed up dreams about dragons
So how do you feel now that we know Old World is gonna start with Brettonia vs Tomb Kings?
Those resculpts of the dragon princes were pretty nice compared to the more static older versions also the older ones were done in a red scheme. Lore wise the goofiness made sense as they were paying tribute to when the used to actually ride dragons around.
I think that we Bretonnian players generally just want them as they are; though perhaps a bit 'normal' or dull to others, its important to remember what drew us to them in the first place, so changing them too much would not go over well.
Lego galidor even had a TV show if I'm not mistaken. With McDonalds toys aswell. The monsters look cool tho but I wasn't alive back then
Shouldn't have ever got rid of WHFB in my opinion.
I loved the old skellys…they had a ton of character…realistic looking skeletons break too easily no matter the material anyway
Looking forward to the Old world.
I would like to paint a sky cutter
Im surprised I didn’t see the cockatrice or that old orc standard bearer with the tusked helmet
Legolas was in STAR TREK the Phantom Menace, not Star Wars!
Oh Boy would it be cool to see Legolas in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Epic crossover!
my possibly unpopular opinion: We use to play all day long garage games, and movement trays were a no go.
I miss the High Elf Silverhelms, used them as a basis to convert my Shining Spears.
Extra Shush in GW means helmets with ornaments that are 6 feet tall and gatling guns coming out of your chest without motor or chamber.
