      me too! i have too many bikes with cottered cranks to count. although i have always got them out one way or another

      Really glad to be now living in this golden age of cotter-less cranks!
      I remember having to drill one out - hacksaw off the nut and the end of the cotter-pin then drill it without damaging either the BB shaft or the crank.

      The BikeSmithDesign cotter press is really really nice if you're serious about needing one.

    Enjoyed the old tools segment. Old bikes always seem to require three or four hands to work on! I remember all those odd tools that were just for adjusting brakes. Maybe in twenty years, there will be only one size for all the bolts on your bike.

    A very long time ago when I learned to fix bikes as a kid, I would have killed for that cotter-pin tool! I only had my dad's big old hammer and a punch, that was a struggle to use as a 9 year old kid...... Really enjoyed the history lesson. :-)

    I would love to apply for the grant but I don't think I can justify being a community as I am just a family mechanic. I only service a total of 12 bikes between 2 families. Mainly kids bikes. But thanks for all your videos on repairs. They've really helped me learn.

    The improvement to the BBP-1.2 that I would most like to see would be the addition of a 25x37mm drift for standard 6805 bearings.

    I always enjoy the "A Look Back / Tools from the Past" segments. One tool that I spotted and don't recognize: What's the deal with the hook spanner that has a keystone-shaped piece bolted to it? Seen at 7:35.

    • @parktool
      @parktool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That tool is the HCW-2, manufactured by us up through the year 2000. What you are seeing there is actually a rivet that allows the tool to adjust to different sizes of adjustable bottom bracket lockrings. The other side is a 36mm box end for fixed BB cups, similar to the HCW-4 that we make today. You can see more pictures here: www.bikerecyclery.com/park-tool-hcw-2-bottom-bracket-headset-wrench-35mm-fixed-cup-adjustable-locknut-hook-spanner-discontinued-rare/

  • @camilocalvo5098

    @parktool If you use the BBP-AOS kit to take the bearings out you would need to push against the frame if there is no cup pre-installed, this will probably scratch or mark my frame. Is there something that I'm missing, why would I use this method of extraction?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This ultimately depends on the frame design and bottom bracket. The goal is not to have to impact the frame. Some frames have a milled area around the bottom bracket or there is paint but the user would rather risk the paint than the impact.

    great video! i would like to see more bike tool history. its very fascinating stuff. on a side note, why is there a a long delay in shipping of park tool tools in the US?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just like bicycles and components and accessories, our tools are in such high demand right now that it's hard to keep up. And since we supply worldwide to both pro shops and consumers we got slammed from two sides during all the shutdowns. WE're shipping more than ever and doing our best to meet the demand...we promise! Thanks for your patience

    Are there bike stands for heavier ebikes like Juicee Hyperscrambler 2?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of our bike stand have a weight rating on them. That weight rating is for the amount of force being put on the stand. So, say you have a 60lb bike and are putting 40 lbs of pressure on the pedal wrench to remove a pedal. You will want a stand that is rated up to 100lbs. The PCS-4-2 or -1 and the PRS-25 are both rated at 100lbs. If you need more than that one of our professional stands. If 80lbs works then our PCS-10.2 or 9.2 are great options.

    • @newttella1043
      @newttella1043 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll stick with my hardware store hack of a rod, washers and my socket set. The key here is that any bearing being removed is gonna get mangled and damaged beyond recognition.

  • @marnusdege

    Can the BBP-AOS be used with the BBP-1 or is it specifically for the BBP-1.2 ??

    • @parktool
      @parktool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will work with the BBP-1. If you have DUB however, you need the drift.

    • @marnusdege

    • @parktool
      @parktool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long does it take to pay off a $40,000 alignment machine? Or a $15,000 rolling tool cabinet? Depends on the amount of service a shop is doing? Same applies here.

    anyone know where to get a cheep park took bicycle stand, using my basket ball hoop as a bike stand is getting kind of annoying

    • @newttella1043
      @newttella1043 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just get a cheap basic bike stand from another brand. Then start saving for when that cheap stand breaks, which may take over 10 years or hard wrenching. My cheap stand took about that long for the clamp release threads to wear out, but then I just added washers to shift the threads over and still going strong.

      They are 'buy once' tools (e.g. higher quality) since the people who need them use them often and they need to work right every time. If you need a tool that you might use once or twice...then yeah, park tool is not for you in most cases.
