      I disagree.
Benoit's only famous for being a brilliant detective - in both films, people only know him by name and reputation. His "southern hokum" is just that - hokum - an affectation that he uses to act in contrast with his reputation and throw people off guard.
If he were on a case involving people who actually knew him, or expected his foghorn leghorn shtick, I could totally see him becoming South African or Russian or what have you to similarly fuck with them

That movie and that plot device totally blew my mind. Early on, it subverted the mystery genre by seemingly revealing what really happened to Harlan that night. Also, it was at this point that it seemed more like Marta's movie rather than Blanc's. He then seems to not be much of a detective as he's unable to deduce what happened. Then, in the final moments, he finally goes into full Poirot-Sherlock mode as he figures out the true tale of what had happened. Turns out, he's actually a great detective.

While I like the character of Blanc, my one issue with him is that, for supposedly being a famous Private Investigator, he sure does seem to be quite obtuse when the plot calls for it, especially when centered around issues concerning Marta.

He knew she was involved the whole time. Yet he also knew whatever involvement in Harlan's death was, it was not out of malice. He even tells her later that whatever she did to muddy the waters or bend the truth he knew she had a good reason for doing, so he decided to bide his time and wait for the details to come to light, or for her to confess.
