    Baja is the best deal in saltwater fly fishing. Half of what a comparable tarpon or bonefish location costs.

      You bet, hopefully a few anglers will stick some additional fish with a little extra coaching before the trip. Most of the guides aren't able to speak enough English to articulate themselves in regards to strategy so it's good to be prepared.

    100% for the Galvan Torque! I use them in saltwater all the time. both of my Galvans have seen about 6 years of salt and still work and it's a hell of a value for what they cost and what you get for that money. I've never had a problem with the non sealed drag and I fish the surf all the time. I just wash them in fresh water after every season and they keep going and going. Ironically the reals I've had major problems with over the years were all "sealed" drags which almost never stay sealed so they break down from the inside while you think everything is fine (until it isn't).

      What a great testimonial! Thanks for sharing. Right behind Tibor the Galvan Torque is a fabulous reel.

    What’s the etiquette there in Baja when catching these rooster fish? Catch and release? Eat and mount? Thanks!

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question, catch and release. The Captains will often bring them in the boat for a pic and unhooking - then send 'em on their way after a good revival.

    Any tips for chasing roosters in Costa Rica’s Pacific waters as opposed to Baja?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the tackle and the general presentation is exactly the same, in Baja we throw sardines into likely water in order to find them and get a shot. Not sure if you'll have that option in CR or they are simply an ancillary catch.

    The flies don’t really matter when you’re chumming with bait. It’s pretty automatic.

    I'm confused about the leader. You said you were just using one long continual piece of FC for the leader. So that means no tapered leader or adding tippet? I can run just straight fluoro? I have some tapered leaders with 25# shock tippet anyway but I'm asking just in case i break them off

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. One piece, no taper.

    • @bron2158
      @bron2158 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My Baja contact uses 4-6 feet of furled (twisted) leader with a barrel swivel where you add 3 feet of desired tippet. Super strength and turnover, no twisting of leader/lline. I had never heard of furled leaders but they are a thing. I will be in Loreto in July. He slays them there for a month every year.

    I missed what kinda real your recommended and how longs your rod thanks don't catch all of em

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I like a 9' rod, that is very standard. You don't want anything longer from an elevated boat. Regarding the reel, a Tibor Gulfstream would be my preference, but they are backordered for 6+ months right now at Tibor. Next choice for me is the Galvan Torque T-12.

    So.... you have to use bait and teasers for fly fishing roosters like this? Just fishing with more steps. Using all the other forms of fishing to trick a fish into biting a fly. lol ok
