About this video: Winter fly fishing is worth being cold! We know your hands get cold. We know you get ice in your rod guides. And we know the fish aren't as active. But winter fly fishing is a BLAST! Some of the best fish we catch every year, we catch during winter. And it's so peaceful to be on the water when the rivers are empty, the snow is on the ground, and the air is still. On this episode of Untangled, Spencer lays out EVERYTHING he does on a successful day of winter fly fishing. He talks about how to find the fish, what fly fishing flies and rigs to use, the best gear, how to stay warm, and yes, how to deal with ice in your guides. Watch the show, then head out and catch some winter fish!

Winter fly fishing is the worst! Everyone please stay home where it's warm. Tie some flies instead and we'll see you in the spring. Or better yet, July.

I prefer fly fishing in the winter. It’s harder, which makes it more fun, and less people is always nice. The main thing is you just have to be good at layering and have some solid high-quality layers. Took me a few years to figure out my exact set up, but it’s worth the trial and error. Just caught a few browns on the Hobble Creek this morning. 👌🏼

About keeping your hands warm. I finally found a solution that has worked well for me. I use a neoprene pair of Glacier Gloves. As you mentioned, I also take them off when I catch a fish and then dry my hands before putting it back on. Excellent video. Thank you for sharing.

I am a little behind in watching. I grew up in South Dakota, so I know something about fishing in the winter although much of mine was through a 6 in hole. And I was not rich enough to have an Ice Shack. After many years,I got smart, I moved to Virginia Beach and was fishing on New Year's Eve and caught two large mouth and was out in Nov catching Speckled trout. Both days were in the 60's. That is how to stay warm and catch fish in the winter.

I know the answer to the problem that Craig from Missouri had! That drove me bonkers for years with my conventional rod and a weighted plastic worm, I couldn’t figure out how it was physically possible to do this, I finally saw the solution to this in a Field & Stream magazine……. Think of it as like a giant half hitch knot. A huge loop formed in your fly line and went around your fly/tippet/leader, and also the tip of your rod. Then it cinched up and appears to have magically formed. To undo it simply pull out a lot of slack in the line between the two snake guides and then pull it up and over your rod tip.
Spencer you are spot on, it comes from impatience, too much swinging the rod around with slack line.

Winter fishing often it is only for a few hours during the day that the fish are active and feeding. Reading the water gives you an edge. The combination of cold water and cold air. Add rain hail snow wind chill. A spill into the water during summer is often zero consequence. In winter that cold shock can quickly become life threatening. As soon as you get on solid ground. Wet, cold, wind chill drops your core temp rapidly. Have a dry sack with spare dry clothes. Get changed into dry clothing as quickly as possible. The pluses of winter fishing are with the limited range and amount of food available. Larger fish can be less picky, more likely to take your fly. If you are blessed to have my favourite fish in your waters. Winter is prime time for grayling

it's worth braving the cold outdoors... why? You're typically alone, first to reach the fishing spot, last off the river, and winter trout can be impressively large

I look forward to your programs , they have helped me very much. I was invited to go on a trout fishing trip to Missouri a few weeks ago and we fished using woolie boogers and leach patterns. The third day I vowed to try something new for me , namely ... nymphs. There was a large riffle in the river and I tried to remember your video on fishing rifles. I tied on a nymph and using an indicator, I caught a 14 " rainbow and three 10 inches. I really enjoyed the nymphing and being a nymphomaniac...I guess. My question is this...there are weighted nymphs and unweighted, why use unweighted? Thank you and keep the videos coming. Plm

Happy Thanksgiving to all you folks in America.
Here is a great tip for keeping your hands warm from Mr. Swentosky at Troutbitten. Take a pair of calf length or tube socks and cut off the feet. Pull the tube part over your wrist and forearm. Slide your handwarmer packet between the sock and the inside of your wrist. The elastic in the sock will keep the handwarmer packet in place and the handwarmer will heat your blood as it enters your hand. It sounds crazy but I've tried it and it works. Now, it is not going to make your hands feel like they just came out of an oven. But it does take the edge off. Also, use wool gloves/mitts. Wool can keep you warm even when wet.

at 31mins i know how it happens the line from the guide that goes out of the guide goes over the rod tip and the fly line goes through the fly line loop caused by the guide line so when you finish untangling the line the line is no longer in the guide
