      Yes, but.... John 3:16 is just the 2nd Good News, which is indeed the core of Christianity. But people cannot understand perfect forgiveness if they don't realize they deserve perfect justice (and punishment). That's why the bad news is almost as important as the good news.

    I don't know if that's penal substitution (correct me if I'm wrong). It was a tricky use of words (at least for me), so I would rather say that Jesus made the payment, He payed the fine that we couldn't. An infinitely good God needs an infinitely good sacrifice. That's why a mere human or angel couldn't do it. That's why animal sacrifice wasn't enough and that's why I dissagree with Jehovah's Witnesses. Jesus died as a human, but because of His divine nature, He could pay the fine with His blood.
    I like the way Greg said in the end, that you either recieve perfect mercy or perfect justice.
    I haven't read Tactics yet, but I'll buy it some day after I deal with those that I have already 😂.
    Awesome content as always!

      @LoveYourNeighbour. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't agree with Jehovah's Witnesses on Jesus being Michael the Archangel. John 1:1, Colossians 1:15-17, along with several other verses make it CLEAR who Jesus is (spiritually). And it's definitely NOT Michael the Archangel. Greg DID explain it well at the end. I agree. In the very end, people will either be given back PRECISELY what they deserve - no more & no less (Romans 2:6). OR they will be given what they DON'T deserve - perfect mercy.

    So many questions...
    1st. Christians, is this indeed an accurate or at least as all the useful parts of what the gospel is? Because so often when I, as a former Christian formulate this back when asked, “what did you think the gospel is”, I get “oh you don’t get it, it’s actually x, y, z and 1, 2, 3. You never had the gospel. Which leads into, if evangelism is so important (the great commission), then why is the message only when it’s transmitted to someone who accepts it? Could it be that most people who hear the gospel, receive it in acceptable form and still are unconvinced by it for good reasons (not because of “just wanting to sin or be our own God)”?
    Next, what does it even mean for god to be your friend. In my experience, friends interact in meaningful ways and in groups. When I’m in a friendship I know it. A lot of times, my friend calls me. Again in my experience and I judge if you are really honest with yourself most of you interactions with god require you to show up 1st. Quiet your soul. Sit down to pray, go to church to hear about how your relationship with god works. God doesn’t seem to break into our lives in any real tangible manner other than the “holy spirit” impression. I’m sorry but this seems way to open for false attribution.
    God is angry. It only seems passive aggressively. “You better shape up or I’m gonna get you when you die.” When I’m angry at someone cleanly, I let them know right away and we work it out. The gospel seems to portray a vindictive and petty god. Which finally leads into: if yell at my daughter, apologize and we work it out, it’s done. But god ticks this on the bad list of crimes that will send me to hell. Which system seems more accurate and actually loving.
    Dealing with consequences in a timely manner and having actual restoration possible now or just racking up points against you unless you pray the sinner’s get out of jail and all your past present and future crime will just be waived.
    This is almost literally magical thinking. And maybe that’s the beauty one sees in the gospel. But really ask yourself if it’s true.

    • @ardbegthequestion
      @ardbegthequestion 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Kile - the only “100% true” thing is to put it hyperbolically is that you’ve completely failed to address my question/comment and obfuscated with scripture and spiritual language. If you are basically putting forth the vacuous statement that God’s ways aren’t our ways, fine. I get it, I believed it, I lived it. But if you’d like to actually engage my comments, please try toning down the Bible speak. Maybe you can’t and it’s so engrained that you. Fine. I am not really interested in reading the Bible/commentary through a comment. So if so, simply put the references to all your responses. Regards.

    Another way of looking at Christs atonement and its necessity is understanding that humanity is life poor. We pursue death in all its forms (not at all times but at least in part) for different reasons and it is unsustainable, life reductive and contagious. It grows like cancer or a tumor. These practices wear down vitality and constitution causing our physical deterioration until decay "corruption" consumes us whole and we perish. This is why men die. God is life rich (eternal) because all of his ways, practices and very nature are life giving, sustainable and propagating. He is love. Pure, exalted, forgiving self sacrificing love. Gods eternal life giving nature can overcome the vastness of all of mankind's bad choices because it is infinite, in very much the same way the suns light can illuminate all of the vastness of exposed earth it faces overcoming all darkness. He is so life rich he can pay all of mans debt against life. What an offer... His riches for our debt just for acknowledging his standard as righteous. Faith. What a gracious God. There is none other in any belief system like Him.

    Excellent definition of the gospel. Another excellent definition, one I learned from listening to evangelist, author, and speaker, Ray Comfort is this, once you've taken someone through the Commandments:
    "The 10 Commandments are called the Moral Law of God. You and I broke that Law, Jesus paid the fine. That's what happened on the cross."
    As important as apologetics are, they should always be balanced with the gospel. Apologetics addresses the intellect, the place of reason, but the gospel, when combined with the Commandments, addresses the conscience, and that's what really matters, because apologetics, though important, will never help a person to see their need to flee God's wrath because of their sins. God's Moral Law _does._

    I fundamentally disagree with his Either or Statement at the end... 'Perfect Justice' or 'Perfect Mercy' bc perfect justice will be dealt out either way. Mercy comes through Christ. To say it another way: Can God be unjust... Ever? Will he be just OR merciful or just AND merciful. Naturally the 2nd if God is maximally good. Jesus paid the fine (death, recption of God's wrath) which the law requires and THEN we can receive Mercy because the just requirements of the Law is satisfied.

    with respect....I'm disturbed.... it seems clear here....that this is presented in complete arminian fashion as if to say people have the ability to assess things and make decision on their own. This is at the 1:50 mark. It is presented as if we just simply, by ourselves, on our own, decide to 'accept' salvation....that is.....we can 'will' it. or being gracious....maybe i missed something. Its one thing to say the truth...that is that the ones who believe will not perish but have eternal life, as in John 3:16. But nowhere in scripture is it EVER stated that anyone makes a 'decision' to be saved. That is simply semi Pelagian.

      Because isn't that what humans would want to do, live forever, never die. Especially during a time when people died so quickly, like the First Century, when the Roman Empire was torturing and killing so many people. That is when what could be A) a human fantasy or B) a God's promise, living forever if you just give loyalty to a God, spread like wildfire.
      How would it be perfect justice? Someone who lives a good life, but considers the idea of justice to be more than giving a sinner a place to live forever and the good person to get nothing, or hell. That isn't justice, but a bribe.
