Alex as always another great video! I think I see a flow video coming. Perhaps something along the lines of the maxspect gyre 300 series versus ecotech marine Vortex series etc. Have a good weekend.
This was helpful. What puts me off corals is all the lingo. I wish there was a dummys guide/glossary. Acros, softies, leathers (kinky corals?) sps that look like lps, zoas etc etc. What goes in what group? Anemone, I know that one. Until I saw a coral that looked like an anemone. Aaarggh
My dads friend has a 100 gallon mixed reef with about 50% sps (digi monti, plating monti, acropora, pocillopora, stylophora You name an sps he has it) and his par in the sps area is only 200 to 300 but his tank turn over rate is X113! at its mostly focused at the top with the acros and montis and only a handful at lower levels for lps and he even has some soft corals
Great video. I wish I learnt about 3 mo this ago that my phosphates were really low and now not detectable and losing all my montipora digitata. It basically starved. First they all went pale then started to strip one colony at a time. Heartbreaking hobby sometimes.
I have a 66g vol mixed reef with not too heavy of a bio load, and do bi monthly icp tests, im up to 4 drops every day of seachem iodine to get to optimal levels
Tank looks amazing - so glad to hear that monti came back and is doing awesome ;) Great tips as always. I regret not picking up some iodine as a disinfectant - store talked me out of it but it may have saved the torches I got there. I love the fish selection - look amazing at feeding time ;)
I love the "easy SPS" makes me feel like a champ - I've noticed amazing growth and colouring up since dosing red sea colours! Thanks for the videos you are a legend.
The Reef Dork I dose it according to calcium consumption. In my tiny tank it’s 0.3ml of each daily. It’s making a big difference. Truthfully I haven’t tested the levels so I hope I’m not going overboard.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, so happy you added this video NOW. It's been two weeks since I've added my first rainbow monti and a green hystrix. They've been model citizens - I put them on a random spot and I already see them growing. Unlike the stupid xenia which seems miserable 😣 7 ppm nitrates and 0.01 phosphates is enough for it.
Great video Alex! I noticed that you have a lot of deep red on you rocks. Is that coralline algae? I have it in my 32 gallon biocube. I used to have cyano bacteria, but it is gone now, I think. it was the same colour.
It's not coralline - my uchin ate all that when I got him! I'm pretty sure it's not cyano too - I think it's some kind of sponge, but I can't be sure. It's been there for a long time though and doesn't seem to cause any issues though so all good. Edit - i've just noticed this comment was on an old video. I haven't watched it for a while so it could well be when I had a cyano outbreak!
hi Thanks for the video. i have the same tank as you and i am having trouble with my wave makers. the flow in the tank is pushing the 2 clown fish around. i have now turned them off and just my return pump is on witch is pushing the water nice but im very new to reefing . should i try pulse mode on them. they are vectra MP40s any help many thanks and keep up the good work. paul
I'd leave them to it - they'll find somewhere out of the way. I run 2x MP40s at 80%. It you're really bothered, you could turn the pumps down for a bit. Do you have a reeflink? If so, you can set different flow modes throughout the day. If not, reef crest is a good option.
lol you said 10 am central which is appreciated but funny because in the US we don't use central time as a standard, it's either Eastern or Pacific time; then the central and mountain time people have to convert
For some reason I don't have luck with SPS in my 220 gallon tank. All the parameters are in place, I confirmed this with an ICP test and my daily Trident testing. I have 4 Radeon XR15 pros and what I consider to be great flow. I have flow coming from my return, 2 mp40's, a gyre and a Nero 5. I used a PAR meter to make sure I meet the PAR requirements for a mixed reef tank. I've tried acropower and reef energy (not at the same time) but no luck whatsoever. Tank is 2 years old and my Euphylia do just fine. I just don't get it!
Thank you! My parameters are not stable enough yet for sps. Monti frags fade out after a month or 2. Still just doing reading. Just learned GFO drops alk. Iodine is probably a touch low in many tanks. Another reminder that 'washing machine' flow is probably as/more important than lighting. Thank you!
My Monte Carlo got so big it didn't get the floor it needed and started to bleach out that's what people don't realise in an aquarium with makers slow down calves get bigger say you're always fighting for more flow
@@ReefDork ok .. so lets county I got a RS Reefer425XL Got 2 Nero5 pumps on 60% puls (8500liter each prohour ) Can i count the 2pumps together?? 2x8500liter=17000ltr pro hour 425x40=17000liter is this correct? 🤔
Those are 11,000lph according to the website. So 60% of that is 6,600 x2 = 13,200. Your tank volume will be much less than that so I'd guess 350L ish. So 38x turnover.
5 years on , is this pointer still true or has something else been proven ? I have everything here mentioned, a thriving lps display but can’t get plating monti or forest fire to grow
I have a large skimmer and lots of surface movement. And I run an algae bed in my sump which is lit on a reverse schedule to my tank lights so my pH remains high over night. Those are the best ways in my opinion. You can also run an airline to your skimmer from outside. There are other ways but those are the easiest and should be enough. 🙂
Get to know your corals, yes. Pentax Papilio binoculars! I have never seen my corals as well before yesterday. Those cunning Montipora nudibranchs cannot hide from the binoculars. I found you you little buggers. Enjoy your dip. 129 euro, or 10% the price of my varilux eyeglasses, and I can see between polyps of SPS, the tissue texture, etc. These work far better than the reef nanoscope that fixes to the glass with suction cup. I will not go coral shopping without them now.
8. Most Acropora aren't as colourful as the pictures in real life, i spent the first 6 months of the hobby wondering why no shops stock the crazy colored sticks I've seen online haha
I only buy the stuff they have too much of that is clearly growing fast on the plug. I don't care about the crazy color morphs for tons of $$$. I want the easiest possible tank, I spent my 20s and 30s trying to prove I was able to keep hard stuff and now I just want my tank to be pretty and low effort.
hi.. stupid question: why do you have this "aesthetic" wallpaper as background of your tank? i understand, that its the wallpaper of your room, but why didnt you choose to give the tank (e.g.) a black background. i saw your wallpaper in several videos now and i find the birds a little bit out of place - next to a coral - and was really wondering why someone has this background for his tank.. until i saw your room... but still... just asking...
Love his channel and watch all the time, but I hate watching him perch the full open bottle of iodine on the brace of his tank. One little slip away from a tank nuking screw up, years and possibly tens of thousands down the drain. Hold it in your other hand or put it on the table man! Much love though and thanks for all the great vids, keep it up!
The Reef Dork makes my Fridays so much better! I love the peninsula tank
This guy is something else. It's not like others reef youtuber.
Now I understand what happened... I had a few losses that coincide with my Rowaphos usage! You are a wealth of knowledge!! Thanks for all you do.
Hi Alex. Revisited this one again. 👍🏻
Your Coraline algae looks absolutely amazing. I haven’t had Coraline that looked that great since the 90s.
Alex as always another great video! I think I see a flow video coming. Perhaps something along the lines of the maxspect gyre 300 series versus ecotech marine Vortex series etc.

Ecotech, Maxspect, if you're watching let's make this happen! 😁
I find it rather unbelievable that you don’t have a whole lot more subscribers on your channel.
Take care and have a good weekend.
Aww, shucks. Thanks, appreciate it 🙏

Wish Ud do more than one vid a week there’s not many fish channels that don’t bore me now but I like your vids, you and prestige reef = spot on 👌
I'd like to do more but time doesn't allow it at the moment. When it does, I will 🙂. Thanks for the support.
I was always afraid to try acropora but found out in the past 6 months they aren't as difficult as there made out

My reef tank had 5X the recommended levels of iodine despite having many molting inverts in the tank and no history of dosing.
Test before you dose.

Hii RD 😀 got a question
Most reefers say: tanks need to flow 40times a hour the tank capacity with the wavewaker .. is this true??
Probably a reasonable target. But with sps, you more or less can't have too much in my opinion. But it's a case of seeing what works for each tank. 🙂

Just re-watched it. It's all still valid, but this isn't really a how to guide so there are better videos for that. Check out Coral Euphoria...
Hi how do you raise your ph in your tank and how can I do it in a reef system.
How much water do you need to replace in that tank each week? As I was thinking about this tank
I do a 53 litre water change every fortnight.
@@ReefDork sorry I'm ment through evaporation
Oh, I see. Sorry. I measured it last August when I lost 2.5L per day. That can fluctuate a little but is probably a fair average.

The 8 tip is not to put the bottle of iodine on top of the tank bracing. One mistake you could empty the entire iodine bottle into the tank. 😁😁
