We know there isn't a total agreement on what a *Holy Grail* torch coral is, some might call this strain a *Dragon Soul* but that's the trouble with trade names. The only *REAL* name for this coral is Euphyllia glabrescens. You can buy Revive from our North American Retail Partner Premium Aquatics: premiumaquatics.com/products/fishies-revive-coral-cleaner-168oz-500ml.html
But if you only care about the REAL name, why even mention the trade names or that it was a "holy grail" to me it should be called the Holy flatworm hammer
This answered a lot of questions for me, I've never set up a tank before so I didn't know how to attach coral, what or how dipping was and I was always curious as well how long they can stay out of water. thank you for this!
Seeing as through it appears that there is an infestation of flat worms in that system, doesn't it seem like dipping individual corals is a loosing battle? Aside from a wrasse, what other methods would you use to treat the whole tank? Thanks and I greatly appreciate your content...Cheers from Canada
if it was a chronic problem I'd certainly be worried and would have done something to completely eradicate them but since it's not, I just keep an eye the corals.
Hey Marc, hi from Halifax. My LFS recommends the Springers damsel a.k.a. Blue Sapphire Damsel as a good utility fish to combat flatworms. Do some research on it, keep in mind they can be territorial and have a small area that they will patrol. For a larger tank you would add them for based on how large this area is. My tank is an 80 gal corner tank and I have one, probably should have two as one half of the tank is not being patrolled.
This is excellent I have 2 torch corals which open through out the whole day and out the blue they close up n I noticed some black dots on the corals so I’m thinking it could be flat worms but I will try the coral revive thank you
That was great thanks so much so many flatworms. I wasn’t expecting that made me think maybe I need to do a dip. It’s been just over 8 months since I added my corals 😀👍🏻
This is exactly what I have in my aquarium. The flatworms look like shingles on my rocks. I keep pulling hundreds out with a target feeder. I have had to dip my torch coral since it was kind of sad looking. It's been a week now and I see it a little better🙏. I don't want to use anything to dose my aquarium for flat worms and I am currently looking for rigid tubing to attach hose to suck them out.
We can only imagine how many flatworms are actually in the tank wow. That orange hammer up front would be my show piece that thing is amazing. U might be surprised at how much more those torches open. Can’t wait to see
You'd be surprised, I've dipped others and had virtually none come off, and some that have had them bad seem to shake them off after a nice thorough dip for years
Just as a tip to look into, I think I had the same flatworms and I got rid of them with Tropic Marins "ELIMI-PHOS RAPID" It's for rapid PO4 reduction (Lanthanum based), but somehow kills flatworms too 👍
Nice video! I'm super excited for the Nano reef 1 year update too. I'm planning a tank and showed my wife the nano build and said "mmm, I want that!" Quick question: would you recommend any inverts/fish to help with taking out those flatworms?
Hey Jake. I have been living with those flatworms for 15 years. I have had 100% success rate with melanarus wrasse (3 different specimens) eating these guys. They will never be all gone but their population will decrease by 90%. No luck with sixline wrasse at all. Good luck.
@@ReefBuildersVideo I hope it helps. I have not had any of the other varieties of Halichoeres, just Halichoeres melanurus. Mileage may vary with other species. Good luck! Oh, by the way, I am not a wrasse guy either but these dudes pull their weight!
Heyho, Elimi Phos Rapid from Tropic Marin is intended to reduce Phos and it does but the positiv other effect it has is that it kills the normal flatworms in the tank.
Hello, friend! you're cool! you motivated me to create my own channel! i also started to study corals and shoot! I did it! thank you and good luck in all your endeavors!
Thanks.. I have a small euphyllia garden, am going to try your process with one and if it has any I’ll do them all. Love your videos always learn a ton!!
Lovely tank. How much flow do you have in this? What type I’m having a hard time knowing how much is enough for lps and sps etc. I know there’s general turn over times but it’s looks like pretty low flow in this tank. Tank size and setting etc? Thank you
Should you use a series of dips. Rinse, blow off, repeat until you have spent 1-2 minutes x 3 or 4 fresh dips in sequence. Shouldn’t you now dip, all the euphyllia?
torches are the only Euphyllia and all others are Fimbriaphyllia, if they grow together it seems ok but the only time problems arise is when you put a big fat healthy torch next to smaller, weaker Euphyllias
I've recently had to frag hammer and frogspawn because they were getting so large they were shading themselves and each other. Now I have a tank full of frags that need new homes.
I had a full 3 month war with flatworms and thought it was bad and time to shut down. FlatwormExit was the final solution. It killed my starfishes but I cant believe you have soooo many
I know this doesn’t pertain to this vid but I have. A toadstool and I took it off my the frag plug i brought it with and glued it to a new one will it be okay
This FW already breed all over the tank & corals.. this is also happen in my tank.. i dip it with FW Exit by salifert, and it took some corals died after..
Wow, that's kind of scary to see that many flatworms pop off, even if they are benign. There has to be natural ways to deal with that as I can't imagine removing corals for dipping is in any way practical for most people. That said, Revive always reminded me of PineSol, now I know why!... not that I'd ever dip my corals in Pine Sol :D
once you see it on one polyp there's nothing you can do except siphon it off and hope it doesn't spread to other corals. I occasionally lose a head here and there and I don't freak out, sometimes it just happens to a single corallite but isn't systemic in an aquarium
Those euphyllia really love that flatworm tank!
Looool
Hahahaa perfect

I can’t imagine how great that torch must’ve felt after getting all those flatworms off
ohhh mannn.. i dont even want to think about it

Those flatworms loving that euphyllia dominated tank :)
That euphyllia is loving that flatworm dominated tank😂
You know you're a reefer when... you have a kessil as a bench lamp.
Hi Jake! great video, there were certainly a lot of flat worms! 😀👍
Just only two corals that live in so many flatworms. I cannot imagine that how many flatworm are there in your tank.
If you added a 6 lined wrasse, he would have been the happiest and best fed wrasse ever.
if thats whats on just 1 coral, imagine whats hiding in the rest of the tank

That tank needs a dose of flatworm X
Flatworm X can crash tanks.
Get a wrasse damsel.

LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos man keep up the awesome work 👍
Awesome video! Love the torch but i'm still obsessed with your stripped candy canes! I'd love to find a frag of those one day.
what if you dosed Revive directly in the tank to get rid of them on all corals? would it create problems with the other livestock?
YES! The dip is a dip. That means prolonged exposure will harm your corals and other livestock.
oh boy, that was a freaking legion !! 😯
I just got the brightwell aquatics coral amino too, super excited to see the growth
Great video!
How many liters does that tank hold? looks awesome!
What light do you have on those tanks. And second don't you keep any wrasse or gobies to take care of the flat worms.
Thanks

Love the flatworm dominant reef tank :p
technically it's a BACTERIA dominated aquarium ;-)
Like Christmas brown snow globe of flatworms LOL
Jake, what saw do you use for making the flat cuts, also were you spraying rodi water or saltwater?
I saw the camera turn on the orange filter. What did you use for that?
Hey Jake. I have been living with those flatworms for 15 years. I have had 100% success rate with melanarus wrasse (3 different specimens) eating these guys. They will never be all gone but their population will decrease by 90%. No luck with sixline wrasse at all. Good luck.
thanks for the tip, I'll look into adding a Halichoeres sp. wrasse to this tank for general maintenance

Heyho, Elimi Phos Rapid from Tropic Marin is intended to reduce Phos and it does but the positiv other effect it has is that it kills the normal flatworms in the tank.
How did you identify that the coral contained those flatworm initially?
Knowing they are there, and you can see them if you look closely on the tentacles, or the base when polyps are retracted at night
That's two years of growth from a single head?! W O W
What lighting are you using?
Hello, friend! you're cool! you motivated me to create my own channel! i also started to study corals and shoot! I did it! thank you and good luck in all your endeavors!
Having that many flatworms
on the holly grail would they not have spread to the other euphyllia in the tank? I would think the tank is full of them.
Some corals have a few and some have none, not quite sure what encourages the FW to target certain corals and avoid others

they grow fast enough I don't feed them anything specific, but broadcast feed the whole tank a gumbo of Reef Roids and Reef Blizzard

What do you use to wet the band saw
Nice little 6 line wrasse would love that flat worn buffet
Hey Jake what is that fuzzy orange club shaped coral above that torch?! Some kinda orange Digi? Love it in that tank
Pavona madlivensis

what type brand of glue did u used ?
i did my Flatworm treatment with ElimiPhos rapid, in my 1000 Liter Tank i´v dosed 3 times 10 ml and the Flatworms did disapeer
Do you recommend separating torches and hammers? I have two close in proximity but wondering if they can coexist
torches are the only Euphyllia and all others are Fimbriaphyllia, if they grow together it seems ok but the only time problems arise is when you put a big fat healthy torch next to smaller, weaker Euphyllias

where did the aussie gold torch go ?

Good video Jake. Is the bandsaw a must? Is there another way to get a straight cut.
Some people use a dremmel with a cutting attachment
Dremel with diamond wheel
Merci pour le partage jake 💪👍
Nice!! Kevin gets a coral!! That’s basically what happens with my pay check too. ;-)
Great video!
anyone else start itching watching this?
I see the Colorado shirt, is there a store front in Colorado?
Once you glue them to the main rock, how do you frag or remove them later to dip?
just pull them off and reglue, like I did with the starting torch colony
Are those red planaria? Or a different kind of flatworm? Thanks, great video
just generic, non-destructive FW so not coral-eating and not reds
Really starting to like euphyllia. Thats a beautiful tank.

that orange hammer!

How often can I dip my corals? I'm trying to get rid of all my flat worms since I have a relatively small tank with 2 corals
Does the revive dip need to be rinsed off the coral before it’s put back into the tank?
doesn't hurt, especially if you have a smaller tank
Also look for eggs under the membrane and scrape them off. Dips won’t affect the eggs.
Do you think there a lot of red bugs in the other corals in that tank.
nope

Flatworms and asterina stars are so often the stuff that pops off when dipped. I kind of don't mind Asteria stars however.
What do you do with the excess skeleton? Toss it, I assume?
yeah just trash
