Marcus Aurelius' Advice For Better Days

  • It’s humbling to think that Marcus Aurelius, the head of the most powerful empire on earth, had the same amount of hours in the day as you.
    Just 24.
    So how did he get it all done?
    How did he have time to be a king, a philosopher, a writer, a husband? To pass laws and judge cases? To lead troops into battle and guide Rome through a terrible plague? And do this while remaining good? Without being corrupted by the temptations or the stress of his position?
    Well, routine had something to do it. He was a man of habit-all the Stoics were. They understood, as Aristotle did, that we are what we repeatedly do. That excellence is a habit.

    That’s why Meditations is the ultimate self-help guide: Marcus Aurelius had no idea that anyone would ever read it. He was chastising himself, not dispensing advice to others as a wannabe guru. From this I get an image of Marcus as someone who really liked to sleep in- just like I do. He was chastising himself to go against his desires and get out of bed.

That disease will follow them for the rest of their lives, and almost certainly be passed on to their offspring. Any one they partner with will also have to bear the desiese and fakeness they live by. Rejoice that you are rid of these scumbages and let them wollo in their own filth. One of my favorite Marcus Aurelius quotes: "Concentrate every minute like a Roman on doing what’s in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, with justice." We must discern the center, and learn to con-centrate. In all that we do. In a sense, life really is that simple, and that wonderful.

      The book by Piers Steel on Procrastination is a good one, it gave many insights on why people ( me too ) procrastinate and what to do about it. Analytically seeing the problem of procrastination works better than only forcing oneself. Like , you are able to make a truant child ( your mind ) do something by convincing him rather than ordering him to do something with the fear of a punishment if he is not willing to do it.

      gpt Marcus:
      Thank you for your message. I understand that finding one's passion and purpose in life can be challenging, especially when others around us may not be supportive or understanding. However, it is essential to remember that we are ultimately responsible for our own actions and choices.
      It is true that not everyone can find or pursue their passion, but each of us can strive to live a virtuous life and make the best of our circumstances. Reflect on what matters most to you, and try to find small ways to incorporate those values into your daily life. In doing so, you may discover new passions or develop a deeper appreciation for the world around you.
      Furthermore, it is important not to judge ourselves by the opinions of others, but rather to focus on cultivating our own inner strength and resilience. As I wrote in 'Meditations', 'Be like the cliff against which the waves continually break; but it stands firm and tames the fury of the water around it.'"
      Remember that the journey to self-discovery is not an easy one, and it may take time to find your path. Be patient with yourself, and do not lose hope.

    Wow, this video really hits home for me. Marcus Aurelius' advice to focus on doing what we were born to do as human beings is so important. It's easy to get caught up in the comfort of staying in bed or avoiding work, but we have a responsibility to ourselves and to the world to contribute in meaningful ways.
    I think what Marcus Aurelius is really getting at is the idea of finding purpose and meaning in our lives. We can't just exist for the sake of existing; we need to actively pursue our passions and work towards a greater purpose.
    It's also interesting to think about the examples he gives of animals and insects, who are so diligent in carrying out their individual tasks to keep the world in order. As humans, we have the capacity to do so much more, but we often fall short.
    Overall, this video has inspired me to be more intentional about how I spend my time and to prioritize doing things that align with my values and purpose. And hey, if subscribing to a daily stoic email can help me stay on track, I'm all for it!

    This message is a lot easy to get behind if you have a job you enjoy or at least is indifferent about. But for the majority of people that is not the case.
    As humans our true nature is to keep wanting more for ourselves, for better or for worse. We want a true purpose on this earth, we want compassion from others, and a better position in life than what we currently have.
    I think a better message for this video should be to get up and work so that you can achieve a greater position on life than what you have right now, other wise your gonna rot in a hole all your life and have nothing to show for it. Its not easy at all, and also not fair for most people, but it's the reality

    What’s great about Marcus Aurelius is that he didn’t just write from the comfort of the sidelines, or make detached musings. His life was a challenging one with enormous responsibilities on his shoulders and he had to guide himself through the many storms of his reign.

    This makes me think of this woman I worked with who ha been with this company for over 30 years. She was denied management a dozen times despite being really good at her job. It wasn't until I told her that she's probably being held back because she's so damn good at her job and they didn't want to lose her productivity. Lol she quit and is now a happy stay at home mom. Don't waste your life working for a fake goal when in the end when you retire they only throw you a little party, sign a card, and then replace you in two weeks. 😂😂

    • @jkazi122
      @jkazi122 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@MnemonicHack The point I was making with that story flew right over your head. This false sense of productivity and being disciplined to improve your output is horsesh*t. You weren't born so some company that might not be around in another 100 years can profit. Nothing lasts forever, and knowing that you should live your life how you want to live it.. not defined by fake goals and aspirations that quite literally don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

    • @MnemonicHack
      @MnemonicHack ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jkazi122 No, I got the point you were making, I just think it was a dumb point.
      What do you mean "fake goals and aspirations"? What exactly is that, by your understanding? Do you think wanting to succeed in your profession is a fake goal? Wanting to better yourself and receiving compensation for it?
      I'm not impressed by your dollar-store psychology quotes. It's pretty funny you post this here, actually, since Marcus Aurelius talks specifically about doing work as one's purpose in life, and not wasting time on frivolity. And before you latch on to that, I said wasting time: there's a difference between making enough time to relax when you need to, and having too much and becoming lazy and slothful.
      Who are YOU to say her desire for promotion was a "fake goal"? You don't define other people's lives, nor their aspirations.

    • @jkazi122
      @jkazi122 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MnemonicHack The point isn't dumb, you're just being wilfully ignorant. At this point 43 other people understood what I was saying besides you. Who are you to demand an explanation that I don't owe you. Go on believing in your expired American dream.
      It's hilarious that you talk about "dollar-store" psychology while simultaneously being disillusioned by capitalism and defending quotes from a dead guy that never even knew the concept just so you can cope.

    This is missing a key component. One does not work solely for the sake of working. No one’s sole purpose is to work. It’s to work for a purpose. If you’re sitting in a cubicle under artificial fluorescent lights 40-50 hours a week to get by while simultaneously contributing to the over abundant wealth of your ceo, that is not your purpose. Make no mistake, your purpose is out there. Finding that purpose, THAT is what is worth getting out of bed for. If someone (or some TH-cam video) makes you feel lazy, as if there must be something wrong with you, because you have trouble motivating yourself to get out of bed to do work that doesn’t inspire you or fulfill your purpose in any way, don’t listen to them. Rather, listen to your body and soul telling you this is not what you were put here for. Seek your purpose. The motivation will follow.
