- That is right, the fully rebuilt VR6 turbo GTI aka White Wookie is alive. After a full engine rebuild and adding a turbo it's finally running. The first starts were not all successful. Today we look at why it didn't start the first 3 times and some driving footage.

Anyone who preserves a vr6 is my hero
I don’t want to sell my vr6 ☹️
Absolutely!
Thank you guys again for the support of this project. The "end" result is going to be amazing.
Sorry if i repeat previus questions, But what gearbox u use?
IT was the same gearbox that came in the car. I didn't do anything to it but clean it up a little
It will be coming back out at some point for a LSD
Nothing like the sound of a fresh build first start. All the parts angrily coming to life. The engine slowly finding its rhythm. Love it.
Congrats! Great to see a project starting to come to fruition! Once it moves under its own power the motivation flows in!
That is such a killer sounding VW. :-) I wish my '92 Cabrio sounded like that. :-)
I was legit cheering when the engine roared to life.
Thank you !!!!
Man, what a great series on getting the car to this point. So true to how probably 95% of the real builds are done and a good lesson for the new generation used to instant gratification and seeing full car rebuilds done in a week, or recapped in an hour in TV.
Great job and congrats.
No oil pressure gauge? A light at least? You're a brave man!
The car has a light. ;) But I did pick an oil pressure gauge up. Should be installing next week.
Dude nice work!! Next step hit up the drag strip once it’s ALL finished.!
I drive with no coolant gauge 30 miles a day, I've tried tracking the issue, probably thermostat stuck or wiring from coolant sender, my mk3 vr has survived without it, but would really like to fix the issue or get an add on gauge.
First starts are always where i get ultra nervous. I have done many engine rebuilds but always Doubt myself on that first start.
glad to hear i'm not the only one :)
That's one of the best feelings in the world, firing up your rebuilt engine for the first time. Congrats, and god damn, the VR6 is the best sounding engine EVAR. I never get tired of hearing them. I wish I never got rid of mine. Can't wait to see this thing rip.
I know how it feels to not be able to explain how it feels lol. I took my S10 off the road to do some suspension tweaks in 2014. I ended up doing a complete suspension overhaul, body work and a 350 swap lol. About 3-4 weeks ago was the first time I had driven it in nearly 3 years. That feeling was indescribable.
So here I am just finished my ‘95 Passat VR6 and no start. YES I SWAPPED THE PLUGS TOO!! You and your vids of the Wookie so helped in my work! THANK YOU! Headed to Patreon!
Awesome man i know that feeling!! I drove my 71 beetle to the shops with no road tax no insurance and no MOT on first start up, with no bonnet or rear valance. It was aaaawesooome
Having brought numerous motorcycles and one car back from the dead, it’s ALWAYS a nervous moment at first start, but when it lights, it’s so exciting. Every time.
I m not a VW owner but I watch your video every time you issue a new one.
Thank you!
I could totally feel your anxiety and joy. You’ve helped me so much with my car. I can’t thank you enough.
Awesome. Congratulations Charles! 👍🏼 nothing beats the sweet symphony of the VR6!
I remember limping my rabbit to the gas station after doing the 16v swap and I was entirely too excited about it! Definitely know the feeling.
That happened a few times with my Cabby
Charles! I'm so happy for you for reaching this huuuuggeee milestone! And the sound of the engine is amazing! Well done, good job.
Hopefully the rest of the build will be as smooth as the engine rebuild and turbo install.
Thank you! I am hoping the next steps are a little smoother. LOL
I just bought a 97 vr6 gti thank you for what seems as endless knowledge on this vr6 project I am getting into.
YES! So glad to see this thing running and driving. It was awesome seeing how stoked you were on the build. Don't keep us waiting too long with some driving clips!
So happy for you man! That car is sweet!
+briansmobile1 thanks my dude!!!
This is awesome. Haven't been following your channel nearly enough. As a die hard vw guy its good to see a legit channel doing a legit build. Cheers!
Congrats...I love that feeling. The first time my rx300 turned over after doing a valve job was amazing...it's a daily driver now (3 months of putzing with it & 2000$ total in the car).
NICE!
lately I'm not having the time to properly follow this build, but I'm very happy for you, Charles. you are a very nice guy and deserves to have some fun. all the best!
That VR6 has to be one of the slickest engine designs I've seen in the 50+ years of my automotive love affair. Enjoy the ride.
First start up and drive after a rebuild is one of the best feelings! Congrats
This is very encouraging. It takes a certain kind of person and a supportive environment to do these things. I'm the type, but I got to move my project to a better environment. This drives my already impractical project cost through the roof. Wish me luck!
I congratulate you on your success and I thank you for sharing the precious moments. Your genuine excitement is shared. I wish I was there just to hand you the tools.
Heeeeeey I know exactly how ya feel. When I finally got my gti started and as soon as I hit boost I had the identical look on my face as you did when you were driving. Good job man. Like the crew membership. You’ve helped me a lot on my project. Much appreciated.
So nice to hear it run! I'm doing the same with my 87 Chevy and like you said, when it comes together, it's all worth it. Can't wait to see what's next man.
Before it starts, your wondering what part you missed, didn't install right or what you might have done wrong. After it starts, just about beside yourself marveling at how that engine sounds. It's a great feeling and such a relief. Great build Charles.
Hi Charles thank you for keeping the MK3 VR6 alive.
I am currently working on a 2004 Audi A4 Avant and this gives me lots of motivation to just keep going. Really good job on the rebuild and it all looks pretty nice!!
That sounded pretty sweet Charles. I can see why you are so excited with it and it gives you a boost to push on and finish it up.
Thanks! I am ready to get this on the road for real
All those monks who make fun of you for having so much joy out of this after finally getting a ride in it haven't got a clue how it feels and they must have been never involved into something like that! Cheers man! Im finishing up my ABF turbo engine and will be happy as f*** if all goes well
Great to see the engine is working!
Good luck with all the rest Charles! 👍👍👍
Hey Charles, I just bought my first car a couple weeks ago, it's a 2005 Passat TDI GLS wagon. I love it so much, only thing is haha I had to replace a 600$ headlight and a 1300$ timing belt. You mentioned these cars are repair heavy And I believed you. Then lo and behold it broke! It dosent matter though, For some reason I just love that car so much, it could fly off a cliff and id still try to fix it, thanks fot showing me VW
LOL, I feel that way about my 05 wagon. Love that damn car
Btw when you have captions enabled is shows "music" when the engine is running
HAHA For real? That is awesome!
HumbleMechanic I was thinking " heck yes vr6s are music"
I took a little video of it. Dude thank you for letting me know. I feel the same way HAHAHA
Charles Dap doesn't list a Eurovan. That sucks. Oh well.
Love watching the build. The guys you said making fun of you. They are just clueless. Nothing like the feeling of getting your project up and running, no matter how much or how little work it took.
Can't wait for the interior videos now.
WRENCH ON DUDE
Thanks man! Funny because the ones that make the most fun of me about it are my wife and 2.5 year old daughter.. They get a little bit of a pass
HumbleMechanic
Those two definitely get a pass. Maybe when your daughter gets older she will be out there wrenching with Dad.
Great video. Watching this gives me the drive to finnish my 1.8 20v mk2 golf conversion
i know this is an old video but i had to come back to it to laugh. Yesterday i started my mk1 rabbit vr6 swap for the first time and had the same issue. FLIPPED THE KNOCK AND SPEED SENSOR AROUND. unfourtantly for me it took about 4 hours of trouble shooting, ecu testing and everything for me to figure it out. feels good to see it happens to professionals too!
A year and a half doesn't sound so bad! I've been *attempting* to build a 1.8T for going on 5 years now. Long story. Anyway, enjoy the content and hopefully I can have the same feeling you endured at the start up sometime.
Awesome job man! I know how you feel. Just finished my full suspension rebuild on my 1996 Audi UrS6. Got it back on the road yesterday and it was such a glorious feeling. So stoked to have my ride back on the road. Already starting to plan out further mods LOL! I'm sure you are equally pumped to get your car back on the road too. Looking forward to the end result of your GTI.
I like your big smile on the face, enjoy the mk lll turbo 2.8 VR6.Happy for you mate!
I dont know what it really is about the VR6 engine but man. Its just over-all a gorgeous engine!
Congrats on the white wookie!.I just bought a 1990 Toyota Celica GTS as my project car. Can't wait to have the same feeling as you when it's done.
MiamiZombie2012 project cars are never finished
Amen to that
Well done mate...building a mk4 gti now also a 95 turbo celica......that turbo manifold is spanky me like.
its about time. ive been following this build pretty much since youve started it. you did a great job with it so far.
Congratulations Charles! gives me hope on my VR6T Cabrio project almost 3 years since ive ran it :(
+Trent Stambaugh hell yes.
That smile. It truly is the best.
Way to Go. Charles. I literally got goosebumps on that start...awesome feeling
:)
Natango Nambala i
Saw the video a second time and I still laugh when you say "AAAAAH! I'M SO EXCITED!" Very happy for you. I'm hoping to get that same satisfaction on my project car: a '72 Beetle. Great job on getting White Wookie fired up, Charles. Keep up the great work and videos. =)
awesome bro, Its going to be an amazing ride when its done. I was excited to see how happy you were driving it for the first time.
I remember my first vw bug engine I rebuilt (I was maybe 15) I was soooo nervous that I'd messed it up, but when i first got to drive it and nothing broke or quit I was ecstatic. no feeling is better
LOL Thanks. It's funny about that works. I have put about 120 miles on it now.. This car is sick!
I totally share your feelings about that excitement you describe...
I know exactly how you feel I've been working on my Audi A3 for about four months nowand I am now deciding that I'm probably going to just rebuild the whole enginedon't have all the support you do but hoping it doesn't take quite as long LOL absolutely love the show and congratulations on getting your build to where it is can't wait to see the finished product
Congrats on the start up! Can't wait to see it fully ready.
Nice!! I remember when I first joined TH-cam and found you... you were working on this. Congrats my friend! I hope you keep these vids going!
NICE! Don't worry we still have a long road.
Everything looks so clean and new like it came off a assembly line well done.
Thank you. That was one of the goals of the build. I wanted it to look "factory"
HumbleMechanic well it certainly does now hurry up and make more videos lol
WOW!!
Hard work pays off humble mechanic.
Congratulations.
Nice Build there.
First start up is always a hustle, eh?
We once had flipped one camshaft 180°, did start, shot loooots of flames from the exhaust.
Funny thing and no damage thank God.
I was waiting for this video, and when the notification came I had to watch it even though I'm still at work ! congrats Charles !!!
I had to replace my vr6 in my 96 passat glx and I replaced it with an OBD1 engine wich has double timing chain and I was worried my cam sensor wasnt going to work but it started right up and drove perfectly. In my opinion it is the best sounding engine I had techtonics exhaust with borla muffler and it sounded perfect.
I remember replacing the starter motor on my 96 golf, it was incredibly satisfactory to get it running even though I needed to jump it every time I cranked it (loose wires). Unfortunately, I crashed it and totaled it the same day. (as it turns out, cars that sit for months can have leaking brake lines and thus low brake fluid levels)
Congratulations Charles!!! great achievement.
Thanks for these videos, they helped me along when I boosted my VR6 Corrado earlier this summer!
Great work Charles, nice to see that boosted VR6 alive!!
WOW WOW WOW... Love the sound of a VR6. I am getting my VR6 engine and gearbox to start my project soon. Getting everything needed. Your video's will help. SO keep doing what you doing. I am fan of your work. #VWislife
congrats for the monumental moment that is moved under its own power I KNOW THE FEELING really man congrats!!!!
Awesome work, Charles - well done! Ya can't beat that first fire feeling! I'll crack a beer for you and the WW right now. 👍🏻
Congratulations Humble Mechanic!!! I'm so excited to see it finally runing!!
can confirm, one of the best feelings in the world. on the flip side, having to redo everything you just worked on is one of the worst feelings. people who havnt done a rebuild or work on cars don't understand.
Nothing like the sweet sound of a vr6
Awesome!!! So happy for you Charles... been waiting for months to see this thing come together!
Great work, so glad to see this. I'm glad you're happy.
I miss living near Raleigh. So much VW love, you! BFI! Apex Tuning!
Come back! Lol
@@HumbleMechanic one day
Congratulations on your first GTI start!!
Good thing on initial no start is lots of priming and oil pumped through block and head.... Much respect sire on getting her up and running before Fall.
LOL, that is true.
Congrats Charles! Sounds good too!
I've enjoyed watching this series. Coming in this late, it's been nice binging on vids from the beginning. Great job.
Congratulations!!!! That’s an awesome car. Best wishes!
Well done Charles VW fan from Christchurch NZ

I know im a little late to see this video but the car is awesome man! Im finishing up my vr6 build this week hopefully and then going for the first start up before the end of the month if all goes well! Awesome channel man its cool seeing more mk3 stuff.
Hell yea. That first start is a great feeling. If it started. HA, mine had some issues for sure
HumbleMechanic praying mine starts 😅 it has to I’m on a time crunch haha
And thank u to bring that beauty back to life
The engine speed sensor is such a common, and annoying, problem...
YEP! Glad I got a new sensor LOL

Thanks so much. I am super pumped too.
Congratulations on the maiden voyage! Been looking forward to this🍻🍻
It’s crazy , when I heard it start I was grinning from ear to ear .... then I remembered ITS NOT MY CAR ...... nevertheless so pleased for you to get it running !!
+1 for getting a big project to the finish line
but now you gotta get it over the line 100% the part that can take way longer that you want it to some times
Yep still a never ending list of things that need to be done
congratulations from germany! I realy enjoy your videos! please show us more of your work :-)
Hey man congratulations on the first drive
Good job glad to see it move under its own power!!
Congratulations Charles on the first start and run
Wish I was that excited. My mk6 gti is sitting in the garage (timing chain tensioner failure)...yay smh...Wish I had some help to get it done. Can't wait to get it back on the road. 😭
Congrats man, you put in some work
Can't wait to see the finished product.
Me too LOL
A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!
Infectious enthusiasm, love it!
Thank you
Congrats! Good to see.
I ordered the Eurowise cast thermostat housing and crack pipe kit for my MK1 VR swap. Needless to say what a pain. They said they were in stock yet they had no crack pipes for the kit, so I had to wait almost 3 weeks for my stuff to ship. While I was at it I had to wait for their engine stand adapter I also ordered during that period... Then when installing the thermostat housing the rear hole was completely drilled off center so I messaged them and they said "We noticed that some VR6 heads are drilled differently", which is an obvious lie.
So I basically had to wait 3 extra weeks on top of original ship date to get my engine on a stand, and when I went to put on the parts that had initially stopped me from getting my engine torn apart and cleaned they didn't fit correctly.
What a nightmare. I'm just writing this to show people how difficult it can be to build a car, and to go with S&P swap parts instead of other companies.
