Colorful Montana Mine Tailings Part 2

  • This video was put together from a rockhounding trip I made to the Dillon, Montana area looking for piles of mine tailings that might have colorful rocks. This area is known for past mining operations of all different minerals and has many abandoned mines. Several of the abandoned mines are located on BLM land. The area where this video was filmed had piles and piles of tailings left behind. Most of the minerals mined in this area were copper, silver, gold, lead and nickel. Dillon, Montana is also known for a couple cool Ghost towns such as the old Bannock Mining town. This was a super fun area to go rockhounding and I had quite a nice time!
I found lots of colorful rocks on this trip. Rocks full of colorful minerals were scattered around! The patterns on some of my finds are so gorgeous and so different from many of my other rockhounding trips. This is Part 2 of my trip.
If you missed Part 1, here is the link:
    • Colorful Montana Mine ...
If you have any guesses as to what some of these rocks may be, please comment and let me and others know!
    Thanks for watching! #thefinders #montanaminerals #minetailings

That rock in the picture of your video is a copper based mineral known as chrysocolla. It is not Turquoise however. But if it is silicified with quartz it is hard enough to work. Some examples can be much more valuable than turquoise. Known as Parrot wing chrysocolla. Because it contains the colors you see in the McCaw parrot. Often the red color that contains iron will cause cracks in your efforts to polish it. You can stabilize it with Opticon a plastic based material used to seal cracks in eyeglasses. It's better if you find it with quartz already in it and avoid stabilizing it. I'd be going to that place over and over just to hunt chrysocolla. It's one of my favorite materials to cut and polish.

Hi MRM, thank you for sharing another adventure out and about around Montana! Other than the wind looked like a really nice day out at the old mine dump. Don't know about you but when there's so much to explore and behold it's just infectious and pulling myself away from those situations is always a struggle for me. Thanks again for sharing the goodies, hope you and yours have a great rest of the week~

I live in central Montana. By that i mesn the exact geographical center of the state in a small town.
I love rock hunting it is so addicting. I dont necessarily look for or pick up only rocks that are worth something...i pick up what catches my eye with its beauty, shape or uniqueness. I have rocks all over my yard and in the house. Some displayed some in icecream buckets or any container that was empty. I have quite the collection of agates. All my rocks are in natural form. None sawn in half. One i dont have a saw and 2 i like them the way they are.
It is a beautiful way to connect with nature , history and so addicting!
So MRM have any ideas from my area i should go pick around?
Thankyou for all your wonderful videos!

Then I get so sad because I don’t have access to rocks like that where I live. I know they are here, in Az. But WHERE! No one really shares locations. I want to go and explore but I’ve been to many places then find that the land has a claim on it and I can’t rockhound. Ugh!!! I love to see and hear the love and appreciation you have! It shows In every one of your videos! my ultimate dream is to rockhound Montana! I still have your email and plan on sending you a message when I’m coming out there in hopes of your knowledge and help 🤗🙏 can you tell me when it’s a good time to come in the spring!? That bright blue IS turquoise. Turquoise is a hydrated phosphate of copper AND aluminum.... the aluminum being what differentiates it from the other copper associated minerals. I figured out that the red from Part 1 is probably cuprite. I know that in Arizona "rainbow" petrified wood, the orange is derived from goethite, a hydrated iron oxide. The red could also be from hematite, a form of oxidized iron.

I hope what you found is not Cinnabar. if it is you should put it in a glass jar with a lid. I found this information on the Internet and believed one of the most deadliest toxins to man.
Cinnabar is visually stunning. It is bright scarlet to brick red in color and resembles quartz in its symmetry and optical characteristics. Overall, it's a gorgeous mineral to look at.
    It’s also the deadliest.
Cinnabar (otherwise known as mercury sulphide) is the single most toxic mineral known to man. I hope it's just a Iron Jasper.
Love your videos, Hope that you find out exactly what the specimens are that you’re finding. They sure are beautiful.

Thank you Douglas. No, it wasn't cinnabar. And yes, thanks for all your info. I am now on the lookout for cinnabar and anything else toxic-- as I have learned a tremendous amount this year!!! Usually the mining area I was at does not have an abundance of jasper/agate--- but I found it, lol!
