Collecting Colorful River Rocks

  • My favorite hobby in the world is collecting colorful river rocks. It really doesn't matter to me what the type of rock is, I am mostly interested in its appeal.
    This rock hunt turned out to be a great success. You can see from my rock haul home that I had many colorful rock finds! Even though the gravel beds around Billings, MT are frequently hunted by rockhounds from all over the United States as well as locally, this video shows there is an endless supply of great material for everyone!
    Thanks for coming along and supporting the growth of my rockhounding channel.

    The best tool you can carry on a rock hunt is a piece of steel like a pocket knife. It has a hardness of 5 quartz has a hardness of 6-6.5 if your knife blade can't cut a groove into the material you are identifying it as being harder than the blade and likely quartz or something more desirable. Past quartz hardness is all the precious material like topaz for instance. Have fun and watch all the videos mom has made for you.

    So I'm fairly new to this TH-cam thing and the next thing I know I'm seeing you finding rocks in a riverbed, then you show us after you cleaned them up and my mind was blown. About half way through I was already thinking about how to build a rock tumbler. That should be fun. Thanks for sharing your awesome video. I'm curious as to what my local rivers have to offer.

      It's amazing to see rocks go from the river bed to tumbled or slabbed with my rock saw...it blows my mind every time. I guarantee you have some treasures down by your river. Build a tumbler!

      It's an endeavour worth exploring and make sure to scour the entire collection of videos mom is offering you. Join a local rock club you won't be sorry. It offers you equipment and greater knowledge in this exciting hobby. Go look at a rock tumbler to get the basics of it's mechanical working and make a huge one to tumble more material all at once. Have fun. Me, 40 years at my local club. Fascinating journey and knowledge.

    that banded moss agate is unreal! Katydid calls those mouth agates lol. Looks like a funny mouth, she finds a lot of weird shaped ones like that. The yellowstone river looks so fun to rock hunt! Thanks for showing all your awesome finds, that was a good day on the river! Nice Baculite fossils too!

    Thanks for posting some new content MRM, very much appreciated!👍 First off, love the cute hair, think this is the first video i've seen ya without the cap on so was nice to see your beaming smiling face thoroughly enjoying every moment of time to just enjoy the hunt...Your enthusiasm is obvious for all to see...and all that beauty surrounding you on an awesome day of adventure out on the river hunting magical goodies the earth offers up for our enjoyment.🎁 Love the banded beauty at 11:45 and especially love days where the material just keeps popping out, just so much fun and very cathartic getting back in touch with the earth more than when we're working. You'all sure do get some really pretty mix of petrified wood chunks outta the river there, beautiful stuff maam, thanks again for sharing it with all of us nerdy tubers! Have a super rest of your weekend~

    • @MontanaRockMom
      @MontanaRockMom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a really great comment you pointed out Terryl because it does take quite a bit of time to train your brain to look for those shapes! I am starting to see things I have never noticed before. Sometimes I will sit down and stare at an area for awhile. Then, after a few minutes, treasures just start popping out! It makes me start smiling because I literally did not see anything when I sat down!

    • @terrylschumacher-levy5150
      @terrylschumacher-levy5150 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same experience with an inherited rock garden. I'd seen these rocks for more than ten years and never noticed anything spectacular about any of them. But once I spotted my first chunky agate 👀😍 the hunt was on! My sis and I found buckets full of beauties of all types. And my love of rockhounding was born again! ♥️

    • @MontanaRockMom
      @MontanaRockMom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@terrylschumacher-levy5150 it's insane right??!! It kills me to think of all the amazing treasures I have literally walked over and missed out on, right under my feet for years and years. That phase of my life is over and I feel so lucky to now be able to find this stuff! ☺

    • @MontanaRockMom
      @MontanaRockMom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Literally anywhere along the Yellowstone river, outside the national park, is full of treasure you can collect! The further east, the more agate. The further west, more minerals. The Rockhounding Montana book is an excellent resource for places to go- I use it all the time!

    Your fossil rock looks like baculites. You should watch Theo Kellison’s channel. If you don’t already. Pretty sure he is from the Billings area also. He has some great videos about those and they are beautiful when polished up:) Love your videos and hope to get over the mountains to your area soon to find my own treasures:)
