I haven’t liked this Ben since he made that smug video, when he still had his Ford zx2, he made a condescending video about affording his cars because “it isn’t that hard, just manage your money” completely disregarding his free/heavy discounts... and years later when he gets bad COVID ( no idea if he’s vax or not ) does he sell his cars for money? No he begs online. This Ben is a turd.
The stress alone doing this kind of job isn’t worth the supposed center of gravity weight gain. The only way I’d be down to do this is if my car came from the factory like this already. A lot of sTi owners have sun roofs. It’s a better option having a sTi non sun roof car and leave the roof alone.
I know mark was a mechanic of some sort in the military, but to have the versatility he has working on cars is impressive even if he had years as a professional auto tech. More mark in the content please - I love seeing the way he goes about doing things.
I love how Jason on Engineering Explained just had a video saying goodbye to the Miata and mentioned how ridiculous carbon roofs are for how little weight you save for the price point
Guys, spot weld cutters and smoke machines to test for leaks are your friends. Good first attempt tho. You'll get it right, but like i always say "Hot rodding will kill us all... Usually from disappointments" 💪🏆
Props for making the attempt. Obviously youre going to have it 100% when its all said and done. I think the next move has to be different seats cuz they have to be hefty as hell
@@Wind_slash0 Yes but with a GR corolla you know you have a car that's more reliable, fuel efficient, cheaper to maintain and way cheaper. So it's not really a fair comparison, still a great build.
Lol I love this car but $7k for 8lbs and a whole lot of trouble😅.. This is why most people just wrap the roof. I’ll take this episode as a cautionary tale 😂
I felt the pain at the end. I was very hopefull because I want to do the same thing to remove the sunroof. Getting rid of a sunroof would make a big difference in weight reduction. Keep in mind that you can still recover from this, just going to take some time. Money aside, IT IS FIXABLE 😁 But cmon, we all make mistakes on our builds, but we keep going because we love our cars ❤ Don't listen to all the negative comments, hang in there. I'm excited to see this car come back.
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also"
It is that thing: you have to set a goal for your project. If you do not set an ending, you will end up putting stuff on your car that will make it worse and will cost you a lot. Right now, I have two projects: The street car is done and I enjoy it the same way it’s been two years. The off-road vehicle is crazy and I started to regret the three last major modifications. It has to stop.
It makes me smile to see the Escort still hanging around in the background. That's such a cool looking little car, and I'd love to see more content with it. I get why it's been on the back burner for so long though.
Dude, There is some beauty in putting blood, sweat, tears, and 8 hours of grinding into your project... it's definitely not the 8 hours of grinding, but there is beauty.
Evolve Automotive just did their M3 touring during the week and they clamoed all the corners. I would go for this approach over putting tyres on the roof as any flex in the middle may pop the edges up. Solid job though and love the factory OEM carbon roof.
As an RSX Type S owner, I get it. The sunroof on the RSX is what separates it from the DC5 Integra Type R variant with a slick top and roof swapping is my #1 wanted mod. I totally get Ben's desire for a carbon fiber roof lol.
as a former WRX STi owner, I can't believe you did this. if i'd started cutting into mine, i would've just kept going until the pieces were perfectly junkyard sized. >.> (it was a lemon)
Good effort dough, I has happen to me try to fix something, and at the end have to run to a mechanic so they can finish it properly, but there is still satisfaction and lot of experience. Great job!!
I'm astonished at how much grinding these guys do without any masks. At this point they probably weigh about a pound more in steel and welding bead dust sitting in their lungs and gut. To anyone else, especially with carbon fiber, carbon fiber splinters your body doesn't register as foreign bodies and will never attack and expel like a wood splinter. It simply will sit in your lungs or wherever it lodges forever. It's why you need to use a full respirator and generally a negative pressure table when working with carbon or graphite. Steel at least will eventually find it's way out, but why breathe it in when it's simple to prevent?
This is a good example of all ways have someone experience with doing this kinds of jobs leave it to professionals or have them guide you in to doing it right
I have always toyed with that thought but couldnt bare to mess around with my daily. Kudos to Ben and Mark for attempting this. U know what? The weight savings may not be worth it, but I think what many ppl missed was the drop in cg. I mean, u can try reducing weight elsewhere; seats, fenders, bonnet, boot, u name it, but nothing is as heavy and sits as high up as the roof of a 4 door sedan. The next best thing is risk cracking your bumpers, scraping your undercarriage at every other speed bump with coilovers.
At least one thing this video confirms is that we shouldn't waste our time replacing the roof with a carbon fiber one. Unless you have a youtube channel and you need to find a new project that nobody has done before... but what a waste of money. Mark should get a bonus on this job. 😆
Marsh composites sells only carbon fiber, no fiberglass carbon trash They've got a roof for 1,300-1,500. Just in case anyone wants to get one without spending 7k Their fitments are also perfect I highly suggest checking them out if you want oem sized fenders full carbon, hood, etc.

I was thinking this the entire episode. 😂
I’ve watch him wrench and diagnose but replacing an entire roof 😲

yep also noticed it
It always reminds me of the "Dumbledore said calmly" meme hahaha

Thanks! The level of craft in this episode was amazing.
Like I said in the last video
This STi is gonna go from "500hp daily" to MY STi IS A RACECAR NOW!

As much as I find this channel entertaining, the moral of each video you guys make seems to be that the more you modify your car, the worse it gets 😄.
This is what being a youtube car guy is all about - financially questionable decisions which are exceptionally entertaining.

I love how well Mark has just blended in with this channel/group he has been a great addition!
The problem with sealing it up inside the car is that the water can still get into those channels and just sit and fester away in there.
