- Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh said that suspending Transport Minister S Iswaran from parliament would not just be unfair and premature, it would overturn the electoral mandate given to him.
Mr Iswaran is currently being investigated by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).
Mr Singh was responding to a motion filed by Progress Singapore Party Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Hazel Poa, who highlighted that Mr Iswaran continues to draw his full MP allowance of S$192,500 per year despite being suspended from his MP duties.
"While it is not appropriate to suspend Mr Iswaran from parliament, it may well be appropriate to suspend the payment of his MP’s allowance," Mr Singh said.

An MP is paid X amount of money to perform his duties. If you're going to suspend all activities of the MP to cooperate in the investigation, then he is not performing his duties for that pay. hence pay deduction or pay stopage. If you are going to use the "innocent until proven guilty" argument, then why did they suspend him in the first place? since he is still innocent, he should be able to perform his MP duties.

Firstly he is stopped from doing anything. So its not his fault he is doing nothing.
Small minded people will see him as guilty and punished, until he is proven innocent.
As Mr Pritam Singh has said, a person may not be necessarily be found guilty, there may be an acquittal.

Yes this is logical. It also applies to normal business in terms of employees. If an employee is suspected of some illegal deeds, then company will usually suspend that staff and do not allow that staff to enter office premises while investigations go underway. Salary can be also suspended as well since you are not doing your duties. So why is he not suspended while under investigation?

As a worker having not be in the office one have to apply for leave/paid mc to be able to be get paid by end of the month.

Parliament should always be mindful of any MP being accused of a crime under presumption of guilty without trial, it's improper fpr government to suspend a duly elected representative indefinitely from carry out his sworn duty in parliament while continue to collect his mandated allowances + benefits at people expense.
nobody asked iswaran to be suspended as an MP, it's just stop paying the allowance, since iswaran is instructed by PM himself to stop his MP duties.

Suspend all pay effective from date of official suspension. If acquitted, backpay salaries / allowances earned during suspension. If guilty, follow rules from monopoly: Go to Jail. Go Directly to Jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

It is sad that opposition MPs cannot do their job in Parliament without fear of attacks by the ruling PAP government. Even the Leader of Opposition has to constantly worry about "fixing" by the government. Is this a first world Parliament? More like a first world dictatorship. There is KJU in DPRK. Having heard Mr Singh mentioned that some have in the past been fully acquitted after the full investigation and the duration is uncertain. May I suggest once an official is put on such suspicion, he should be totally taken out of action and therefore without any revenue. However，should he be found clean, it is hence the justice to fully compensate in revenue during the whole period. As someone or somebody must be accountable for the initiation of such claims. This is to make aware that it is not what i think but what is it situation. To be accused of such an act, is a painful experience and hence they have to be compensated and assured that justice in all areas are provided.
