Back in the sixties when I was e teenager I watched Back Street on the Saturday Night movie on one of the networks. I fell in love with Susan Hayward and John Gavin. I am now 68 and it is still one if my favorite movies of all time. Even though it was not supposedly her best movies it was awesome to me. I just watched it on TCM. Just as wonderful to me. I wish Susan had lived a longer life she could have given us so much more...just had to share ....

My mom and dad would go out on Saturday nights and my grandma would babysit for us and make big buttery bowl of popcorn. I remember Saturday Night at the Movies and Hollywood Palace even as a kid I remember Long, Hot Summer and Back Street and Snows of Kilimanjaro.

It's a drag (no pun intended) there are no latter-day versions of Hayward, Crawford, Davis, Gable, Cagney, and the long list goes on. Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron are great, but....we need more - not this piece of entitled nothing called Rachel Zegler - - AFTER I SPENT 18 HOURS A DAY IN THIS DRESS, I DESERVE TO BE PAID FOR EVERY HOUR THIS STREAMS. After I spent the last few minutes listening to her diatribe, I deserve to be paid for every hour the little ingrate whines about....you name it.
One of my most favorite movies of all time. Mommy loved this movie and introduced me to the Glamour of the 1960s with this and Imitation of life. I was changed forever.

My friend Marc, who was a male nurse years ago actually looked after Susan Hayward (Ms. Chalkley) at the very end of her life. He said that she was so sweet, so frail. Her illness far along by that time, then even tinier than she was in real life. She told him once he resembled one of her sons (w Jess Barker) so they just got on wonderfully. He remembers it as a honor to get to take care of her.
Awwww.. I teared up a tiny bit out of nostalgia at the end of the video when the camera panned the room with all of the memorabilia. 🤗❤️ All the years I've listened to you review (while my eyes are checking out all the things you have in the background.). Ha haaaa.

Many of your presentations I have watched over and over again because they are such gems in the sea of mediocrity amongst reviewers such as yourself. I smell the popcorn when I start to watch these pearls. My one observation would be, why so very long between movies? Would love to see you on a much accelerated schedule. Keep up the great work. Oh, thank you! Years ago when I met Robert Osborne, he told me wonderful stories about Susan Hayward. The most posignant, was when she was so ill, he helped costume designer Nolan Miller arrange for Hayward to finally meet Barbara Stanwyck. And how they picked Hayward up, transported her and her wheel chair to Venice Beach and Stanwyck pushed Hayward around the boardwalk while they finally got to know each other after all those years. Afterwards, Stanwyck sent flowers and called her new friend constantly until Hayward died. Lovely.

Dear Steve, I can't understand why Susan Hayward is so neglected over here in England these days. We have an entire channel devoted to old films and with that and the other channels you can see virtually every film other stars made, but none of hers. Years ago I'd heard the wonderful "Just tell me the story, I'm from Brooklyn" quote you mentioned when reviewing "The Lusty Men" and would have been a fan for that alone, but "Back Street" is such a glorious technicolour sob story and she's so good in it. Not to mention, I've been there ... I fled a truly terrible marriage in my early thirties, with just a suitcase, and every man I met was gay or married - and some of them were both. My gay friends wanted the best for me, and one of them said of a relationship "But it's 'Back Street'" and it always was. And not all married men are as clever as my ex husband about holding on to the house, your possessions and everything you've ever earned. He rang me from Germany (he'd originally got a job with an international firm there on the strength of my speaking German) to complain because the divorce in England wasn't going through quickly enough: "I can't claim tax relief for you because I'm not giving you anything, and I can't claim tax relief for her (the girl friend who'd moved in) - don't you realise I'll be in the Super Tax bracket next year!!" He was priceless material but there just weren't enough anti-depressants. And his mother made Morticia look like Mother Theresa. Oh, Steve! Married men absolutely homed in - even an accountant suddenly broke down and said he couldn't talk to his wife about Mozart! And as for the one who was involved with me for decades and even came on holidays I took with my mother - having disappeared for years he suddenly turned up in the 90s, having sent me red roses, and arrived on my doorstep one week after his wife's funeral! You're a friend, tell me what I did to deserve this. Very best wishes, as always, Alida
MEN! If I wasn't one myself. I'd barely talk to me. And half the time we're not on speaking terms and I live alone. Which is why I live alone. I'm sorry you've had such sorry luck, but you can rest somewhat assured that you are certainly not the only one. At 70, I've had enough and I like myself well enough and my own company to be perfectly satisfied at not having to deal with a the peculiarities of a partner or any of the excess baggage that goes along with relationships.As for Susan Hayward, it's funny, both she and William Holden were box office sensations in the '50's and so few people know who they are today. I think it might have had to do wirth Hayward's standoffish ness when it came to her private life. She was fircely protective and insecure. her defense mechanism was hit them before the hit you, fifuratively. She would do her work and go straight to her trailer until the next scene. She was combative with certain directors. Henry Hathaway in particular and didn't always warm up to her co-stars, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and Riobert Mitchum to be specific. She had the repuation of being cold as a polar bear's foort, but in her defense, she was thought to be stuck-up when in fact, being terribly near sigted, she simply didn't see people and hated wearing her much needed spectacles in public. How she didn't break her neck riding hiorss in so many of her films I'll never know. She also rarely if ever went on talk shows, which would have kept her in the public eye. After she finally won her oscar, she wanted to hide out with her husband on that ranch in Georgia, produce a few films and relax. So....except fo "valley Of The Diolls", she's seldom spoken of except with fans like us who liove her. Steve
You have an incredible film library. Not only DVDs but wonderful books. When I was working at Thule AB in Greenland I had a subscription to a movie book club and got some great stuff but nothing like yours

One of my ex's saw the accumulation and said rather snarkily; "You know Steven, you live here too!" Of course I cracked up. I'm sure you love your collection as much as I do mine. Also since Greenland is a colony of Denmark all of the subsidiary activities were done by the Danes. All I can say is they don’t call them Great Danes for nothing!!!!

Thank you for this review and love of Susan Haywood. My best friend in the world, Mike, who died in 1994 from AIDS, loved, loved, loved Susan Haywood. I have some of his collection of her original movie posters in my entry way. I think he must of had a poster from every one of her movies. So this was a special review to know you loved her too.
Oh Joe, thank you for sharing this touching story about your friend Mike. Susan has always been my favorite actress. In fact for Christmas, a friend gave me a beautiful portrait of her from "I'll Cry Tomorrow" that was part of Robert Osborne's collection, as well as a Blu-Ray of "Back Street". The only poster I have of hers is for "Woman Obsessed", whch I finally got on DVD a year ago. I also like a movie she did in England just after "Back Street" called "I Thank A Fool" with Peter Finch. Unusual story of a mercy killer, which considering what she won her Oscar for is typical Suzie subject matter! LOL! Thanks you again for sharing your story. I'd love to see your posters! So great!! And how they picked Hayward up, transported her and her wheel chair to Venice Beach and Stanwyck pushed Hayward around the boardwalk while they finally got to know each other after all those years. Afterwards, Stanwyck sent flowers and called her new friend constantly until Hayward died. Lovely.

Dear Steve, I can't understand why Susan Hayward is so neglected over here in England these days. We have an entire channel devoted to old films and with that and the other channels you can see virtually every film other stars made, but none of hers. Years ago I'd heard the wonderful "Just tell me the story, I'm from Brooklyn" quote you mentioned when reviewing "The Lusty Men" and would have been a fan for that alone, but "Back Street" is such a glorious technicolour sob story and she's so good in it. Not to mention, I've been there ... I fled a truly terrible marriage in my early thirties, with just a suitcase, and every man I met was gay or married - and some of them were both. My gay friends wanted the best for me, and one of them said of a relationship "But it's 'Back Street'" and it always was. And not all married men are as clever as my ex husband about holding on to the house, your possessions and everything you've ever earned. He rang me from Germany (he'd originally got a job with an international firm there on the strength of my speaking German) to complain because the divorce in England wasn't going through quickly enough: "I can't claim tax relief for you because I'm not giving you anything, and I can't claim tax relief for her (the girl friend who'd moved in) - don't you realise I'll be in the Super Tax bracket next year!!" He was priceless material but there just weren't enough anti-depressants. And his mother made Morticia look like Mother Theresa. Oh, Steve! Married men absolutely homed in - even an accountant suddenly broke down and said he couldn't talk to his wife about Mozart! And as for the one who was involved with me for decades and even came on holidays I took with my mother - having disappeared for years he suddenly turned up in the 90s, having sent me red roses, and arrived on my doorstep one week after his wife's funeral! You're a friend, tell me what I did to deserve this. Very best wishes, as always, Alida
MEN! If I wasn't one myself. I'd barely talk to me. And half the time we're not on speaking terms and I live alone. Which is why I live alone. I'm sorry you've had such sorry luck, but you can rest somewhat assured that you are certainly not the only one. At 70, I've had enough and I like myself well enough and my own company to be perfectly satisfied at not having to deal with a the peculiarities of a partner or any of the excess baggage that goes along with relationships.As for Susan Hayward, it's funny, both she and William Holden were box office sensations in the '50's and so few people know who they are today. I think it might have had to do wirth Hayward's standoffish ness when it came to her private life. She was fircely protective and insecure. her defense mechanism was hit them before the hit you, fifuratively. She would do her work and go straight to her trailer until the next scene. She was combative with certain directors. Henry Hathaway in particular and didn't always warm up to her co-stars, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and Riobert Mitchum to be specific. She had the repuation of being cold as a polar bear's foort, but in her defense, she was thought to be stuck-up when in fact, being terribly near sigted, she simply didn't see people and hated wearing her much needed spectacles in public. How she didn't break her neck riding hiorss in so many of her films I'll never know. She also rarely if ever went on talk shows, which would have kept her in the public eye. After she finally won her oscar, she wanted to hide out with her husband on that ranch in Georgia, produce a few films and relax. So....except fo "valley Of The Diolls", she's seldom spoken of except with fans like us who liove her. Steve

Well, thank you, Jay. It's really getting to be a bit much though. I've lived alone for years and built it steadily. One of my ex's saw the accumulation and said rather snarkily; "You know Steven, you live here too!" Of course I cracked up. I'm sure you love your collection as much as I do mine. As Richard Burton said; " Home is where the books are." and for me it 's the books, the posters, the film stills and the DVDS...oh, well... @@STEVEHAYESTOQ ha. I worked in Greenland when I was in my 20s. Think of a young gay kid at an isolated Air Force base with 500 Air Force men and no women. I was VERY popular. Also since Greenland is a colony of Denmark all of the subsidiary activities were done by the Danes. All I can say is they don’t call them Great Danes for nothing!!!!

Thank you for this review and love of Susan Haywood. My best friend in the world, Mike, who died in 1994 from AIDS, loved, loved, loved Susan Haywood. I have some of his collection of her original movie posters in my entry way. I think he must of had a poster from every one of her movies. So this was a special review to know you loved her too.
Oh Joe, thank you for sharing this touching story about your friend Mike. Susan has always been my favorite actress. In fact for Christmas, a friend gave me a beautiful portrait of her from "I'll Cry Tomorrow" that was part of Robert Osborne's collection, as well as a Blu-Ray of "Back Street". The only poster I have of hers is for "Woman Obsessed", whch I finally got on DVD a year ago. I also like a movie she did in England just after "Back Street" called "I Thank A Fool" with Peter Finch. Unusual story of a mercy killer, which considering what she won her Oscar for is typical Suzie subject matter! LOL! Thanks you again for sharing your story. I'd love to see your posters! So great!!
