You are pretty lucky to be able to get into your classroom this early. I was a school secretary for over 20 yrs and most times the custodial staff almost demanded NO one in the building for the month of June & some July to do their deep cleaning no interruptions. I know things may have changed, I’ve been gone from the school for awhile now. But good for you getting a head start. All the best.
Up until last Thursday I was the custodial department’s secretary where I live. I helped with summer cleaning and there’s nothing worse than laying down a coat of wax and a teacher coming in and walking over it while wet. It has happened every summer since I started. We go school to school so all we ask is for no one to come in the 1 1/2-2 weeks we are there and still no one helps out. It frustrating. Next year is my first year as a teacher and I will most definitely stay out of the building during the summer or at the very least when I see “summer cleaning in progress” signs on all of the doors.
I made sure to check with the custodial staff EVERY TIME they were in my hallway to make sure I was not in their way... In fact on days when they had a couple people in there working I just dropped some stuff off and left! And they put signs up when the wax was wet saying do not enter! I am glad I can get a head start but definitely understand them needing time and space too!
Thank you so much for your work to help keep schools looking nice and clean!! I have utmost respect for the custodial staff at all the schools I have worked in (and everywhere for that matter) because I know that a clean environment is SO important for learning but it is NOT an easy task! I have made sure to double check with the staff at my school and ensured I was not in their way and didn't work on the "Wet wax, do not enter" days :)
I teach nursing students, not littles, and I don’t get to organize anything except my office yet you are one of my favorite TH-cam channels. I feel similarly about tape measures. I always think I’m gonna get my fingers snapped.
You’ll love your new school (I used to work there too). Nice people and great space. Recently moved out of district to teach a wider community. Good luck!
I live for these videos, these videos are the ones I watch when I really want to get ready for back to school but I don't start for less then two months.
I so envy classrooms that have lots of space. I’m in a portable type classroom with 5/6 graders and there is so little space. Sometimes it really drives me crazy.
Bless your heart, I spent the lonngggg years in portables. Ugh….I took precautions, they were still just gross. That’s on top of packing kids in there like sardines!
After so many years of saying I would never be a teacher like my mom, I’m actually considering taking advantage of the new Louisiana teaching programs they just enacted. I’m super nervous but also super excited to start my teacher journey.
If you have an iPhone, the measure app does a pretty good job if you don’t want to use a tape measure! I wouldn’t use it for something you need exact precise measurements like building something, but for figuring out how much border you need or the size of labels, I’ve used it without any problems.
There are soft tape measures that are 120 inches long (10 feet) made for quilters. Just anchor the beginning point with painters tape and stretch the tape measure out to get your measurement. Easy for one person and no risk of slicing fingers on the metal tapes. I always get the heebie-jeebies reeling those in too because I did cut myself once it's a natural response.
I'm starting my first year teacher prep (2nd grade) this week. We should be getting our call to come in soon since floors are almost done. I'm excited, but I think I'll make a reel of the process since I had an Instagram for my student teaching.
Sooo, I’m binging videos again and just watched the move out of your previous classroom earlier today … couldn’t help but notice the first thing you did in your new classroom was peel up some colorful sticker pad thingies from the carpet. 😬 I always love watching your videos, they’re… peaceful and calming while still being fun. I can’t explain it, but I do enjoy them!
@@mrs_katie_in_elementary ahhh! Sit spots! I knew they had a name! I had just watched you peel up the tape in your old classroom and mention to the camera if you were moving into a new classroom, you'd appreciate if the previous teacher had pulled up anything like that on the floor so you were being cognizant to leave your previous classroom as neat and tidy as you could for the incoming teacher. Also, seeing your setups going up started me down the rabbit hole, and there are soooooooo many new ones to watch this year already! I love it!
You are SO lucky to have such an awesome and large classroom. My classroom his about 20x30 with zero storage except a file cabinet from 1950!!! I work in a school that is 70 years old and has never been remodeled except for new floors about 15 years ago. I am so jealous!!!

I am definitely enjoying time off as well! I am a good balance between super-duper rest/relaxation/vacation and being productive so I am not as swamped during back to school!
@@lauramcclain8651 That is your personal opinion. I am sick and tired of all the teacher bashing just because you don't agree with her going into her classroom during the summer. It's not as though she's asking for your help or advice, so shut it! I'm also a teacher mom and have been teaching for almost 16 years now. Some of us just like to be prepared and there's nothing wrong with that!
I think the big takeaway here is that when Katie did her classroom set up videos for the 2021-2022 school year, she didn’t have access until the same time as the whole school, the week or so before school started. So she was trying to set up a brand new classroom in a different state with different curriculum at the same time she was doing new teacher orientation and getting to know her co-workers etc. She did mention wanting to be able to focus on the professional development and new year requirements while not having to worry about moving into a new school/classroom.
I get nervous about tape measures too🤪. When I was little I was playing with my dad’s tape measure and broke it! The tab that holds it came off and the whole tape measure got caught inside. I never told my dad that happened, lol! He must have bought a new one, but an always careful now!
Hi Katie! You could use the little cubbies for storage and depending on class size you could also use some for student resources, Just a thought and I love your new room!
Fun fact: I am also afraid of tape measures bc I did in fact slice open a finger (not between fingers) when playing with my Dad’s tape measure and when I hit that retracting button, the tape measure slipped and I don’t know if I tried to catch it or what, but it didn’t end well. I think I was in middle school or maybe upper elementary.
Check out hello fifth's classroom set up! She uses those same storage built ins for student classroom storage. each one has a bin in a cubby which stores their non ELA materials (ELA materials are in a book bin) Just a thought! 😁
Good job getting started on set-up already. There's always so much work to be done at the beginning of the year that it'll be nice to have that checked off the list. Are you using the same curriculum (but for third grade) since it's the same district?
