I had Hobbe's state of nature given to me in a high school history class as the platform for human rights. The fact that I didn't question those assumptions led me to justify concepts like "collateral damage" and broader means-justify-the-ends reasoning on behalf of my country for many years. I wish I had heard some critiques of the idea at that time.
I'm a self-professed dummy, wanting to get some extra insight on Hobbes over my ponderous reading of the original texts and desperate for manna. Ever hopeful but growing increasingly wary over the montage of US politicians of the last 30 or so years.
