      Tony Mango . I dont know about that. I wonder if what you get out of the Bible reflects who you are. To expand on that; sheep will read "how to be better sheep" because they are drawn towards those passages or interpret the text for application to their lives, while "shepards" or "sheepdogs" will be drawn towards other passages or interpret the text to apply to their lives in that way. Really starting to believe the Bible is a mirror for the "inner self".

    I'm 15 years old and your videos are changing my life! I doubt that there's anyone going to read this, but, who knows...
    I've been born in a Christian family (my father is a Pastor) and I've been struggling hard for the past two and a half years with the apparent contradictions between the objective reality and the way Christianity has been taught to me.
    I was taught to look at reality through the lenses of Christianity. The problem with that was that, by the time I was 13, I had noticed so many inconsistencies and lack of sophistication in the teachings of Christianity that I couldn't handle it anymore and had to admit to myself that it was necessary for me to figure out another way of interpreting the world and/or Christianity.
    Since my father is a pastor, I thought that he could answer my questions and explain to me exactly what certain teachings meant. But turns out that he could barely scratch the surface of the problems I was facing with understanding Christianity.
    Jordan B. Peterson's videos have helped me immensely to unpack the mysteries of Christianity and to understand what does it actually mean to have a meaningful life.
    I'm pretty sure that if it wasn't for your lectures, I'd be going down the path of becoming nihilistic.
    I feel like I'm far from finishing this journey, especially because in your lectures you talk about some quite complicated topics, but you've helped me a lot to find meaning again in life and in religion.
    Thank you very much, Dr. Jordan B. Peterson!

      I went through the same thing as a kid and young adult. It took me till I was 35 years old (I'm 39 now) till I finally was able to stop viewing the world through the warped lens of evangelical Christianity. The contradictions were mentally crippling for me most of my life. I read a book called "Questioning Paul" by Craig Winn. This book changed my life and gave me sooo much understanding and peace. I highly recommend that you read this book. You can read it free online at questioningpaul.com ... I don't expect you to change your entire belief system or trust me (random internet person lol ) ... I'm just saying this book is worth your time. Form your own opinions :)

    I was in despair, in the depths of alcoholism, watching my accomplishments, financial situation, and marriage fall apart. I heard JBP's podcast episode titled "Toxic Masculinity" where he discusses his friend's suicide. I had already been well past the point of plotting out a suicide plan and that lecture pulled me from the brink. I'm nearly 500 days sober and have a decent job. I've been volunteering for service in Alcoholics Anonymous and have begun going to church recently in an attempt to improve my spiritual condition and societal bonds further. On top of that I've lost 70 pounds since I got sober. I've never been a patient of Dr. Peterson, but he's done more for my mental health than any psychologist I've ever seen formally. If I could see him today, I'd thank him for talking me off the ledge, even though he never knew he was doing it.
    Edit: I never expected to get 1000 likes on a 5 year old video, thank you all so much for the outpouring of support. I’ll surely see some of you as I trudge the road of happy destiny. May God bless you and keep you until then.

    Jordan Peterson, I grew up without a father, my mother married 5 times and was very unstable. I battled with drug and alcohol abuse, dropped out of school, turned to crime and was a very narcissistic, destructive individual. Sadly, some of this happened while i became a father at 24 years old to a boy, and i ruined my relationship with his mother and essentially my relationship with my son because of the self-destructive nature i nurtured.
    Now I'm 41 years old, that boy is 17 and I now have a 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter with another baby due in May 2019. I still struggle with fear of failure and commitment, feelings of inadequacy, but you have helped me to understand that I am not alone and I can be the father I never had.
    I want you to know that your words and your ideas have helped me become the father I need to be to break the chain of poverty, addiction and abuse that plagues my family tree so that my children can have a better life than I had. You have helped me find meaning in my life; to improve myself so that those that come after can have a better chance.
    Your wisdom combined with that found in the Bible have put me on the path that i was meant to be on. I believe God has sent you as a messenger to guide the men of the world back to Him. You aren't perfect, you are Jordan Peterson, and you are more of a father to me than any other mortal man has ever been.
    My family are forever grateful for you. Without meeting you, we love you. You have helped change the future of my family history.
    Thank you.

We all have the choice to choose between fear and love constantly. That for me is free will, I am thankful for the works of the likes of Jordan Peterson. Like you said so much shrunk in so little time its beautiful. Makes me think of how much wisdom is contained in the biblical books and how the people who wrote it struggled with shrinking it and still holding the wisdom within the texts. :)

      And we are so lucky to have Jordan Peterson. I think of all of the "soft" sciences, psychology has the most merit and this man is not only a pillar to the scientific community but he had and has the fortitude to seek that which most of us are afraid to pursue. He made the journey to, not a complete, but a better understanding of things and in a way has returned (or returns regularly as anyone who follows him knows that this man is an obsessive ((good for us)) thinker) not to suggest he knows more than you, but to explain his own thinking and thus inspire us to do what he has been doing for decades. That is to truly use the mental capacities we are endowed with to deeply and intimately contemplate and adjust our behaviors accordingly to the ideas, ideals and behaviors with which we identify ourselves.

Anyways that's not my point. First you have to believe in your self cause only you, il say it again cause it might sucks to hear this but it's the truth so only you can change. It starts with the way you think your mind is the most powerful tool that humans possess, it can be used to help you attain success or it can take you to the depths of failure. You must learn to use your mind to its optimal level if you want to live life on a new level. What you think becomes your reality. What i also do in some cases is i visualize myself being were i want to be feeling the feeling of being there and it makes me feel a certain way (positive). Stay focused on what you want cause you can do anything and everything if you put your mind into it my friend it's definitely not going to be easy cause are brain has been programming and reacts automatically from past experiences so fuck the excuse your brain is going to tell you fuck what other people has to say about what you want cause a lot of them will not agree, try to tell you that you can't, are you serious usually they will say these thing because they don't think THEY could do it or what ever. JP, thank you. These lectures have changed my life. I lost my only father figure at the age of sixteen and separated myself from my religious views. For the longest time I could not find reason in the books. My fascination with history had me looking at them from a historical standpoint. I would pull out of them only the historically interesting things. However, having been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder after military service, my life had ground to a halt. Every thing bad that happened to me was so powerful mentally that I began to avoid life altogether whenever I had the chance. A well crafted facade was what kept me as a functioning member of society.
    Since I have discovered your lectures on the bible however, my mind has seemingly been rewired. Especially when I listened to your interview with Joe Rogan. The things you say are so profound, and furthermore they make logical sense. It is as if an explanation of a root human experience lost to us through the centuries has reignited a motivation in me that has been missing for so long. Continue your amazing work! More people, especially men like myself, MUST hear these words.

      Archi M: to see the profound, life-long effect the death of a parent can have on a child, see acestoohigh.com/ and take their test. Very short quiz developed by CDC and Permanente.
      As Peterson said somewhere else, "26 is the new 21". IOW we are maturing more slowly. So losing a parent at 16 is a major blow. But be sure to consider the other questions, too, to get your score.
      You're right, this is important for men. Peterson's psych classes are 80% female, the usual college number. But he says 80% of those attending these lectures was male. He's hitting a nerve.

    The BRILLIANCE this man has to offer this world is beyond anything I expected to know in my lifetime. His intellect surpasses the understanding of most, his vocabulary IQ can't be charted... yet we can all come here where he's allowed us into his mind & can dissect it for us in a way we can all comprehend.
    It's like God gave him a job to do. To explain the Bible in a way no one has - to bring interest back to the most profound book ever written. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat! It's not what you think. It's written like the greatest story ever told, yet every word written is TRUTH translated from our Creator to our basic, simple-minded language. It's so beautiful! And Jordan is the perfect person for this job.
    You WILL be different after knowing the Bible. Those who are uninformed & uneducated yet adamant, who will continue to say they don't believe without ever reading a single word of the one piece of "evidence" we have left, aren't to be heard in the matters of our Creator, for they can never even imagine.
    God forgive them, for they know not what they do.
    Moments like this are for those of us who desire truth above all else.

    I had to literally pause the video because he said something so profound yet said it so succinctly that my mind registered not only the veracity of the argument he presented but the beauty in his choice of words, and it just floored me that someone could speak like this. I've read many things from beautiful wordsmiths, but to hear someone do that with spoken words is surprisingly shocking. I am astounded that this content is available for free, and I feel deeply privileged to be able to partake. Language is beautiful. The English language is astonishingly exceptional among its dialectic counterparts. There's something to admire when an individual's vocabulary is so profound. Also the way one pronounces their words and the choice of literary devices that Dr Jordan Peterson uses is indeed something to appreciate. One does not need rhyme to sound poetic. People who articulate their words in an extraordinary way exhibit a heterogeneity linguistic multiplicity that is truly something to adore.

      And this statement goes in line with what Jesus said on Mark 7: 1-9, “Now the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him. And they saw some of his disciples eat their meal with defiled hands, that is, unwashed ones. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands up to the elbow, clinging to the tradition of the men of former times, and when they come from the market, they do not eat unless they wash themselves. There are many other traditions that they have received and cling to, such as baptisms of cups, pitchers, and copper vessels.) So these Pharisees and scribes asked him: “Why do your disciples not observe the tradition of the men of former times, but they eat their meal with defiled hands?” He said to them: “Isaiah aptly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. It is in vain that they keep worshipping me, for they teach commands of men as doctrines.’ You let go of the commandment of God and cling to the tradition of men.” Further, he said to them: “You skillfully disregard the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.”

      "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also"
      Peterson quite literally goes out of his way to confuse what it means to put your faith in Christ, which is evil. If he doesn't believe, the easy thing to do is simply to say you agree with the moral framework but do not believe there is a God.
      What he is doing is dangerous and dishonest in the extreme - attempting to make a brand new religion out of a fantasy regarding an actual faith tradition creates a thousand thousand points of contention regarding something that cannot be rationally or objectively fixed.
      People ought to be honest. If you don't believe Christ is God, then just leave it alone as far as "faith" is concerned, because according to the tradition being referenced, you don't have faith.

      @@critamine No. I said what I meant.
      It makes no sense to lie and pretend to be Biblical. Full stop. The moral framework in the Bible revolves around what philosophers call "The law of reciprocity". If he likes the law of reciprocity, he should say so.
      The Bible has a logical framework. Making nonsense of it is not synonymous with "applying a logical, near scientific framework to faith in God."
      The Bible says flatly that those who pretend to be Christian but are not are to be avoided by Christians. So whatever it is he's trying to do, it won't work unless he finds a way to do it without lying about religion.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Muslim countries are theocratic - they have no separation between church and state. Religion is what makes the law in these countries. The Quaran and the Hadith, both Muslim texts, are what people follow in order to justify the above-stated beheadings, suicide bombings, and genital mitulation of kids. Please explain to me how this is NOT because of religion.
      As regards to my statement about fascism, the first alliance made by Adolf Hitler was with the Catholic Church. Even during Nazi times, every soldier carried a belt buckle with the words ”Gott Mits Uns” meaning God with Us. In Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, he clearly states that by killing millions of jews he is doing ”God’s work”. Please tell me how this is unrelated to religion.

    Im sure l am not the only atheist who loves Peterson, for me he has put religion into a wonderful context that explains why there is still a fundamental utility to belief that needs to be addressed and understood before we rid ourselves entirely of it. Not saying I agree with all he says but the questions he poses to rationalists are the right questions and we are grateful to him, wish "Hitch" was still around to discuss these points with him.

      Mulinaster Hi. Interesting answer but if you think of God as ‘a friend in the sky’ then it’s perhaps not surprising you’re an atheist. ‘God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere’ - Bonaventure

    • @aguitarcalledchutzpah
      @aguitarcalledchutzpah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mulinaster The Bonaventure quote doesn’t sum up God in a nice neat package of being ‘a friend in the sky’. Also, if what you say about shamanic traditions is correct, namely that we are attempting to ‘take ourselves out of the present’ , then the two are rather incomparable. True religion is about embracing the present ‘not escaping it, and finding that that is where life and joy is to be found! As for nihilism and determinism, you speak with assurance that these are truths. Yes there are unconscious drives and there is a physical death, but the aim of reawakening is to recognise and overcome these and see them as illusions...finding the true self which is connected and yearning for God and eternal. It can be argued that The cross of Christ is also partly an invitation to embrace unavoidable suffering and find life amongst it rather than run from and avoid it. I don’t know if you believe in Love, but the bible states that ‘God is Love’. I recommend checking out Peter Rollins video on the four ways to think about God.

    • @aguitarcalledchutzpah
      @aguitarcalledchutzpah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mulinaster I agree that there is no ‘tooth-fairy’ or a being in the sky called God. You’re argument about a tooth fairy means you are still thinking of God as ‘a being’ as a tooth-fairy is a being. In regards to ‘religion’ you’ve oversimplified it and put it into a nice neat box - something fundamentalist are accused of doing ie oversimplifying life. You too have over simplified things I feel. As for proof...what do you mean?!! Since God is not ‘a being’ I can point to, what proof are you expecting. If you want to meet with God, you have to put the time in. Sit in a room for an hour in silence every day and overcome the nagging monkey brain! As the bible says, ‘Be STILL and KNOW that I am God.’

    • @aguitarcalledchutzpah
      @aguitarcalledchutzpah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mulinaster This is why it’s important to OVERCOME the monkey brain because it has become ‘retarded’ in many respects through socialisation. Socialisation is good on many levels but awful too. Think of the millions sat in traffic everyday on their way to soul-destroying jobs in an attempt to achieve more status and money knowing that it doesn’t satisfy but rather make their lives tedious, stressful and routine. Look at our dedication to redemptive violence believing that we can overcome evil with evil only to get caught up in cycles of revenge. This is part of the monkey brain and it takes religion to awaken us to reality or truth. (The truth will set you free!) You don’t have to dedicate a single second to pursuing my ‘monotheistic deity’ as you referred to God ( again you are simplifying God through your own ignorant concepts and then rightly dismissing those ridiculous concepts thinking that you’re wise for discarding the product of your own ignorance) Perhaps we will all learn to say with Meister Eckhart, ‘May God rid me of God!’ You think you live by intellect alone but you don’t. When a piece of music or art or nature profoundly affects you, it is not through intellect. In fact it can be argued that these things are superfluous to our physical existence yet something about them calls to us, stirs us, moves us. I cannot prove or convince you of anything. If you’re simply not interested, that’s fine. I don’t need to convince you of how good my pizza tastes so that I can enjoy it! I enjoy it for myself. I can only speak of my own profound wxperiences. In fact I’ve had one similar I feel to Philip K Dick. If you look up an experience he had when someone came to his door and a fraction of light bounced off a silver/gold cross she was wearing. In that moment He said that he felt as if he had suddenly become sane as if he had been insane all the time before. No doubt you will write an elegant paragraph on neuroscience for me but that will just be your way of trying to explain the unexplainable so you can have a nice neat answer. Perhaps you need it as perhaps you can’t live with uncertainty and doubt? Those with real faith can because that faith is a deeply found trust, it’s not believing ‘ridiculous things’ as you pretty much say. I challenge you: do you wish to surround yourself with books and thinkers who bolster your already held beliefs or do you wish to step out into the unknown? It’s not always fun, these questions and these pursuits shake what are comforting beliefs/unbeliefs. I’ve been shaken. I’ve examined the atheists, agnostics and believers. There are many very articulate and intelligent believers, some of them scientists even (and no, not creationists necessarily).Yet they don’t believe in Santa or the Tooth Fairy. Alister McGrath is an interesting example. Francis ? - The Human Genome, is another. GK Chesterton. Look over some of the other names in our conversation. Seek them out, wrestle with them. Also Go in silence to your room and sit, observe, don’t think. (There’s room in life for both).

    I have recently realized that studying psychology is, in some ways, a secular attempt to have a religious experience, and it is largely through the work of Jordan Peterson, in this series, that I was made more viscerally aware of the depth of the biblical stories.
    I think this is such a digestible way to bring people to The Word, without coming across as preachy and thereby, possibly pushing people away.
