I bought the XPS 13 (Kaby Lake i7 16GB RAM) recently but was forced to return it for a refund. I did a lot of research before dropping £1400 on the laptop and I knew coil whine was an extremely common and widely reported issue with this laptop. Stupidly I bought it anyway and, lo and behold, my laptop had terrible coil whine, something that's very hard to live with. None of these TH-cam reviews ever mention this potential issue, but I'm convinced it affects almost all Dell XPS laptops to some extent as the coil whine issues have been widely reported online since 2012, yet Dell has done nothing about it. Other issues I had were that the laptop got red hot after playing Hearthstone for 15 minutes (too hot for my lap, cores both reached 95°) the sound had a background hiss when using headphones, the charger brick got too hot to hold during charging, the touchpad randomly refused to register clicks, the laptop refused to sleep (at all), and the keyboard keys felt imprecise and almost wobbly, while also feeling hollow and cheap. To be fair the touchscreen was great and the screen looks amazing, and the general build quality made the laptop feel solid, but it simply has too many basic faults for a premium ultrabook (contrary to what TH-cam reviewers would have you believe) and it left me no choice but to return it.

The fact is the coil whine is not the same in every xps 13 laptop (it is also true about previous generation). In some laptops its irritating as hell, thats true. But iin most cases its barely noticeable (e.g. mine xps with i7-6560u - i hear it only when there's absolutely silent in the room and tbh i notice it only when i think about it). You can read about it on Dell forums. Generally Dell is accepting returns/refunds and offers a new laptop for exchange if you have really bad coil whine. It looks like you had bad luck with it.

      @Zerobob26 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

R Rak To be honest I thought the coil whine was the least of this laptop's issues. I could have ignored it and put my headphones in, but then the sound produced by this laptop had a background hiss. Even the cheapest mobile devices don't have audio background hiss these days, so why does this premium laptop? I tried multiple headphones and all sorts of settings in the audio driver software. Getting red hot while playing a short session of Hearthstone was the final deal breaker because it meant causal gaming on the sofa wasn't possible. There's no way you can convince me the plethora of basic problems I had with the XPS 13 was all just bad luck.

I'm not trying to convince you, just trying to make coil whine situation more clear ;). I can't be 100% sure that Kaby Lake XPS is as good as previous gen. All I can say is I didn't notice any of the issues you listed in my QHD i7-6560U model with Iris graphics. Except the thermals - Dell did really bad job with it and you need to repeaste the laptop to avoid time-to time throttling issues (but still the main performance limiter is 15 TDP). The product is so expensive that everything should be made perfectly and I was really disappointed about it. But except this one I absolutely love this laptop. Once you got all your driver's up to date width Dell's site it works perfect (i also had some issues with that - Dell's driver firmware is a crap and to be 100% sure you got right drivers you need to download it manually). If that's what you're saying is truth it looks like either Dell was too hurry with new XPS generation or you had really bad luck with this particular laptop. Based on the reviews and Dell forums i still think it's the second option but I only own 6th gen Skylake and don't know anyone with the new ones so all above is just my "not-absolutely-sure" thoughts.

R Rak I bought the 9350 version last year with extended warranty, now Dell are replacing it with the 7th gen 9360.
I just hope the coil whine goes, it was so annoying during Skype calls and in quiet rooms

I have seen a ton of complains about killer in other laptops that it dose not work unless you disable some driver or something on it. So is there any notable advantage between sky lake and kaby lake, mostly interested in temperatures.

Thanks for the fantastic review. I first found out about the XPS line through this channel, and I took the plunge when the 9360 came out. I actually found the keyboard to have much better feel than my macbook pro. I also love how home/end/pgup/pgdn are key combos instead of discrete keys, similar to the MBP. The only thing I miss from the MBP is the magsafe power connector - they should really consider putting a similar thing in the next XPS model.

Currently I got Macbook Air 4 years old and love it, especially the keyboard and the touch pad. Kinda scared to buy anohter mac as many people disspaointed with the latest models and their quality.. Could you reccomend the best on your opinion? I would really appreciate that. Budget for my new laptop is around 2K. Or it is worth waiting for Surface Pro 5?Thanks

Hi Lisa, love your reviews. I bought this laptop in november, and though I really like it, I find there are some 'negative' points that never really get mentioned in reviews. Most of these are software related, but people buy a total package, not just hardware. For example, when I play SC2 on this laptop, I will get a severe crackling noise in the audio. I resolved this by disabeling the maxxaudio pro software equalizer that is enabled by default. I've had problems with it not recognizing my headphones until i disabled realtek hd audio configuration. I've had a dozen of blue screens of death related to the wireless card (nwifi.sys google it), updating the driver (which was not trivial al you would get a bsod) seems to have fixed this for the most part as ive had only one bsod last month. Dont get me wrong, I really like this laptop, but it required quite some tinkering to get it to function properly. For a product in this price range I kind of felt like a beta tester, I expect something that works smoothly out of the box. Maybe it's related to having bought it immedately after the release, but even then I feel they should have tested it more thoroughly. Would I recommend this laptop, yes, but not to someone who does not want to tinker.

Would it help to loosen the heat by using external laptop coolers? I'm not sure if blowing cool air from the bottom of the xps would be ok, since the xps blows the heat through the bottom vents. The other laptops I've owned had the vents on the back so I didn't quiet worry about it.

Well, for basic productivity, it's pretty overpowered. The computer is pretty good for media consumption on the go as well. As for games, I've played some WoW and Diablo on there and both run fairly well with WoW usually bouncing between 40 and 60fps and Diablo usually being around 30.

Price is not an issue as it is only a $70 difference for me.

Have you checked out the Asus Zenbook 3 Deluxe?
Trying to decide between the Asus Zenbook 3 Deluxe or Dell XPS 13 for photo editing on the go?
Both with i7, 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD.
Struggling to make a choice between the two.
    Pros of the Zenbook
    - Read/write speeds of the SSD faster than the Dell
    - It’s a lighter laptop
    - Bigger screen
    - Comes with additional USB C dongles in the box (but doesn't have standard USB to plug a mouse dongle in)
    Pros of the Dell
    - Top spec screen is higher res than the Zenbook (3200x1800 vs 1920x1080) (glossy screen may be worse than matte)
    - Brighter screen
    - Battery life is a lot better
    Someone please help me decide!!!

Hi, I just purchased this XPS 13 9360 few days ago, it hasn't been ship to my home yet. May i have ask you some questions please? 1.Is this notebook QUIET? That's really important for me because i hate crazy fan noise. I don't play games on this kind of machine, just for school homework, watch some videos etc. 2. Is this notebook get super hot while using it? I used an ASUS Zenbook UX305 before, it's a great device, no heat at all. I don't really think an I5-7200U can make no heat but at least it should be acceptable.

The USB-C Thunderbolt port can also be used for an external GPU,(although not officially supported due to Dell not making their own external GPU dock) it works very well and easily after installing the correct drivers.

I'm confused! I keep seeing new dell xps 13's being advertised on places like B&H and Microsoft store with a 1920x1080 "touchscreen", but dell's site, their chat rep, and other xps reviews that say I must get the 1320x1800 display to get touchscreen. Now, the 2-in-1 version of the xps does appear to have a 1920x1080 touchscreen option , but I want to buy the laptop version of the xps. Who's correct?

Hello. I am planning to buy a laptop. I was thinking of Dell XPS 13 9360 model. But I did a bit of research, I found that, this laptop gets hot quickly. I will use mainly my laptop in website coding, a bit of writing, web surfing and watching video. The only big applications will be Android Studio and Photoshop. And I use to work putting my laptop on my lap.So I want a laptop with minimal heating issue. Should I go for Dell or I will buy MacBook air?

I am returning mine. Purchased the 9360 a month ago, as i7, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD, and Win 10 pro. Full warranty full species out. The order process was clunky and I had to call someone to get the specs I wanted. I got my confirmation email with all the right specs. When it got here, only had 8GB RAM!!! I called support and spend a few hours to convince them to send me a new laptop! They wanted to send me a reverb unit! The new one got here a couple days ago, still only with 8 GB RAM!!! Crazy. I had to spend another couple hours to figure out if they could guarantee me another new exchange unit. They could not guarantee anything or give me any reason why I was not getting 16GB RAM. Told them to send me return labels for both. I purchased a 13" MacBook Pro with touch in the same config. Apples ordering process was much smoother and I am confident the laptop will come as I ordered. If you are looking at this vs. the MBP. Go with the mac and dual boot windows on it.

Hey Lisa, could you consider reviewing the refreshed Dell Insprion 7000 13in with the Kaby Lake processors? I've been hunting all over the interwebs for reviews on the refreshes to see if the battery life has gotten significantly better, at least compared to the old Broadwell 5th gens, and haven't been able to find reviews from anywhere trustworthy. The processor upgrade is nice enough on its own, but like an hour bump in battery life over the older models would be enough to make me purchase one, especially because they are still priced around $750 for the i5 with 256 gb I believe.

gtx 1050 is likely to be equivalent to a 970m in the laptops so it should be an upgrade to last years 960m model.

You say at about the 8:50 mark that the SSD is in fact upgradeable. I'm more interested maybe in getting a cheaper version with the i5 (for my purposes) and then just dropping a 500gig ssd aftermarket. Does that sound realistic?

Based on your previous review of the XPS 13 (earlier this year), I bought one. I have health issues, and sometimes cannot sit at my desktop Frankenputer (or my MSI Dominator Pro gaming laptop that is for downstairs gaming). The XPS 13 is perfect for days when I'm stuck in bed, but still want to do some basic World of Warcraft (or Stardew Valley) gaming. It also serves as my home inventory database entry, and my vacaction machine, because it's light enough to carry around - try that with the MSI 72S!).
I just wanted to say thank you, Lisa, for the review that lead me to my sick-day companion. Plus, it's nice to see another woman around my age who is into computers. Most of my friends don't get it. :)

I asked Dell about the XPS 15 and they told me "The delay was caused due to some technical reasons." I think it won't be out until Q1 2017. Now leaning towards the Razer Blade.
