hate to be that guy but i really enjoyed this video and really hope you make more videos in the format . you teach a lot of us how to work on stuff, us youngins (we often times dont have a dad or old timers or anyone who can teach us) so we go to these videos and study them. learning from a bank of your knowledge is an absolute privilege . Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Tony, thanks for letting me be a part of your project! I may have to make the trip back from NC when it's time to rebuild the carb and replace the fuel lines. It was nice to hear it run after so many years sitting idle. Great job!
When the points close, they energize the coil. When they open, they collapse the magnetic field , inducing the spark through the secondary winding in the coil.
Probably not. We are so busy with work, I am not sure when we will get up there. I really want to get it running for them. I ended up taking a small TYM tractor backhoe up there to dig a water line for my Sister in Law.
Back when i was in high school in the early 80's i was in shop class we charged up a condenser left it laying on a metal work table and told one of the 9th grade students to bring it too us ....he grabbed ahold of it it dang near cut him a flip when he touched it ..there was a carburetor at the other end of the table ..apperently it still had some gas in it ....fire shot out of the top of it ......it was awesome lol .....
@@TonysTractorAdventure yup but the best one was our shop instructor had a 57 chevy apache pick up ...we wired the seat up to the foot starter his teachers aid almost put a sunroof in that truck when he hit the starter
I have one just like that. I have to say, that machine does not show any of the tell-tale signs of abuse most of the old 4140s do. It's a keeper, for sure.
I just started following.... Would I love to get ahold of a backhoe like this! Every low priced one gets away before I can even go look at it. If course, my wife has forbidden me from get an old backhoe.... She says we can't afford to waste money on junk! Through my eyes, I see it differently. A chance to get a useful machine on my property that won't cost me an arm and a leg.
in 1959 ( when I was 14 ) my dad taught me how to rebuild a v8 1956 Plymouth engine. So that makes me an old timer, and you're right, I was laughing my ass off.
So you are saying, when the points tough, it energizes a magnetic field in the coil building to its maximum potential voltage, then when the points open, the magnetic field collapses sending a charge to the spark plug via the distributor cap and rotary button. I guess the condenser keeps the voltage lower at the points thereby keeping the collapsing magnetic field from the discharging coil from arching across the points? I guess all of this has to happen many times per second? I guess I just assumed the start of the spark process started when the points provided a ground to energized the coil thereby building the charge. I also assumed this all happens in milliseconds. Thank you for setting me straight.
After 3 years, what updates have been completed? Is this tractor back to full functionality, including both bucket systems? Recently acquired an almost identical unit. It's going to take a bit more in depth work. Excited to get it going. Gathering as much information as I can, to assist in my journey.
So were you a 63B? Good job on tapping into the memory bank to set the points, I don’t know if I would have remembered, I haven’t done points in probably 20 years. Anyway really enjoyed the video.

Yes clean & repair carb plus new fuel filter too and add 89 to 91 high octane with A grey bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection cleaner and every 3 months ! When get running put 89 or 91 Octane half full in fuel tank then add 1 gallon of desiel farm or fuel station type let go thru motor and changed engine oil of 10W30 engine oil no synthetic Castrol GTX type in White bottle or Jug types get in plus New Engine Oil Filter too! Do Desiel fuel & gas fuel type and grey bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection cleaner too every 3 months fuel tank worth ! Also antifreeze put new 60 % of green and 40% type of water too!
Tony if ya'll had an actual mechanic standing or sitting behind you it would be a whole lot more useless moves but not nearly as fun. Just depends on whether ya'll want to dig a ditch today tomorrow or next week. The camera work is stupendous. Or that is how it makes me feel.
You are most likely right, but the tractor is not close to me and I don't want a long distance relationship with it. I ordered a carb kit, and will get back up there ASAP.
You 3 are awesome. I hope to find an old machine one day. I can't afford a new machine
I like old equipment and getting it to run.

Frank , it was a fun day and you are welcome any time.
Do they make electronic ignition replacement so you can swap out the old points.
It would make things a lot easier.
They do, bur I don't own these. Not to interested in sinking a big amount of money.
Brings back memories of my younger years nine times out of ten if you broke down it was the points out of adjustment or brent out.
After looking at it, I think the switch was left on and it burned up the condenser. We ordered the Carb Kit so, we will get it running soon. Tony

Sounds about right.
So close! But it runs, so that's good👍🚜 Good job on it guys! Cant wait to see it running and moving!
I ordered the carb kit. Hope to get it running in the next month.
are you going back to get it running buy Nov 1st

NICE MACHINE
It really is. I would try to buy it, but I have a backhoe already.
I have one just like that. I have to say, that machine does not show any of the tell-tale signs of abuse most of the old 4140s do. It's a keeper, for sure.
I would love to have the old machine. The family is keeping it.
With a positive progress you have already made I've got a lot of faith in you
Thank you. It will start and run again. Parts on order.
Enjoyed this video Tony. Looking forward to the next part.
Thank you my friend. Parts are ordered.

Those old backhoes can do some real work. They are simple to work on, all be it heavy, and parts are cheap.

I hear you. I was talking with a teen the other day, and they didn't know what an eight track was.
You get your spark when the points open, not when they close.

Should bring a small tarp so you can put under the place that you are working so if drop something it will not fall on ground it is easier to find
Good idea. We try to bring everything, but we forget many times.
Old vehicles don't rust like new ones.
Better metal
Excellent camera work
Thank you
Really enjoyed this!!! If Uncle John Wayne was still here, he'd be in this up to his elbows!!! Lol He would love it.
I know that is right. He could fix any thing.
still waiting for the updates whats taking so long
End result hank you’re a awesome brother thanks for the awesome video
This is Tony! 😇😇
If you don't have a feeler gauge, a match book cover will work. Guaranteed.
I remember that old truck. I don't see match books around either.
Yep, that is right
Good job. So close

None
Parts from a 1973 buick to whiskey still is a skill I’d like to learn can you teach me I have a 1973 buick
It can be done!
When the points open the spark is produced by an inductive force.
Explain that.
Great vids 👍
Thank you. We had fun making it
The round thing is a capacitor I think.
It is a condenser. It limits the spark between the two contacts on the points. This allows the ignition coil to build its charge for the next spark.

63 buffer! Ended up a 915 Maintenance Warrant Officer
Didn’t drain fuel bowls in carb and fuel pump. Don’t try and work that bad fuel through the system.
It was about a 1 percent chance the carburetor would not have to be rebuilt. I was not interested in staying in the heat that much longer.
Does it have the cable steering?
No. it has a gearbox with drag links

Paul, thank you my friend. I can't wait to get back out to the mill.
I want to see this running soon good try
I know it will run, if we can get the carb rebuilt.
Keep up the good work to both of you and great camera operator 👍👌😊Cheers !!!
Thank you. We will get it fixed. Tanja is awesome at the camera. Have a great weekend

Just needs a fuel delivery work and it should run good.
Carb kit ordered also fuel line and filter.
so when is next video on this project
Not sure. We ordered the parts.

Yep
tony what ever happened with this project
Nothing. We have not been back. Sad too. I have the parts.
did you ever stop to think and forget to start again?

I say to myself why I never fine anything like that?
This stuff, is everywhere around here. Thank you for watching. Tony
pull down the carburetor ,clean the fuel jets and the tractor will be fine
You are most likely right, but the tractor is not close to me and I don't want a long distance relationship with it. I ordered a carb kit, and will get back up there ASAP.
Soooo close are you going to keep that backhoe foe yourself?
No, it is staying with the family. We are just helping out.
Two men. To fit points crazy
Wish you the best.
Would rather watch paint dry
I would encourage you to do just that. Have a great life.
that tractor has a ugly colors.
