  • A detailed video to demo some techniques I've been developing using paper collagraphs and gel plate. I cover how to separate your design or drawing into 2 collagraphs and then register the layers in printing. Loads of fun! If you enjoy colour reduction lino or screen printing I'm sure this will appeal.

    I think the last one was my favorite. All the elements really came together to make something truly special. I think your artwork exemplifies the phrase “more than the sum of its parts.” ❤

    Love the idea of the ballpoint pen. You’ve given me an idea to do this technique on a gel plate and ballpoint pen to test my artwork and see what it might look like before making a dry point print. Less chance of wasting etching plates, and also dry point takes ages to ink up as well as being very messy. Mark you’re brilliant as always, thanks for the videos… kindest regards Sharon.

      I had a quick play this evening and if you just transfer a drawing, no colour etc, results are surpising like a dry point!!! Will make a vid this week

    Hi from Austin Texas. I've been watching your gel printing videos (more than once) thanks so much. I got a gel plate as a gift and have been hesitant to use it not really knowing how or what to do. Your videos have really helped. I also got a pad of Yupo paper, really it's plastic sheets and they take acrylic really well. I've gotten confident watching you experiments to give it a go. Your joy in doing the work is contagious.

    Had a go using the ballpoint technique, and am delighted with the results. They are by no means perfect as I only had layout paper and I think it is too floppy to hold the lines the way I want, however I went back in and hand painted various details, got a great ghost, and a ghost of a ghost which I detailed differently, I was working on a 6x6 but think I will move to 8x10 I find it much nicer for registration. Looking at what you were doing I think you are using a similar A4 cartridge paper note book to one I have, so I shall start to use that instead. I am a bit slow so I am using golden open they are pulling well and only take too long where I am handpainting details like you did the spotty scarf, so a drying rack hack is the next thing! Also it is helping me use up a tube of interference blue, huge tube, I must have made a mistake! Seriously you have done me such a favour sharing these techniques. I really needed the spontaneity of print making to get the ideas flowing. Especially useful was watching how you feel your way around your paper once you are printing. …… you are really such a good teacher…
    Enjoy the holiday seasons and best wishes for the new year.
    PS I have not managed anything useful at all with oil pastels, not sure why, maybe they do not all work the same? Today for the layers and the knives….

      Hi Lindy, thanks for the lovely message, it’s great to get details on how techniques are going and what comes across well enough in the videos for people to go off and explore in their own way. Not sure what’s up with you oil pastels, I have two types, pretty cheap and both do ok. I’ve found derwent academy better than the cray-pas set I have. Excellent. One thing I've found is that embossing with red biro shows up beautifully when you pull with black acrylic, so if you can work out how to use the sheet you pull with, you can get some lovely sinister images on the emboss sheet, as you transfer onto the plate.

      @@yeatesmakes Blue also works, but you don't get the same contrast. I've actually sold a couple of the sheets I used to emboss some transfers, because people liked the effect so much - plus they can easily be painted onto. Happy to share examples, if that's possible, but I'm still way off most of your stuff. It works great with crayon or oil pastels on the back too, over another sheet, so you get at least one extra image to work with.

    • @dominicfairley2527
      @dominicfairley2527 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yeatesmakes and I just remembered that red oil pastel as a resist has a different, but equally unsettling effect on the sheet you use to transfer to a gel plate. I got a beautiful demonic Peter Rabbit completely by accident when doing a gift for my niece.

    Hi. Great videos and tutorials. Like some one earlier has said I've only recently been made aware of your vids and its definitely inspiring to you what you do and makes me want to try this out for myself. I've been getting into lino in the last few year but recently started thinking about monoprinting and how I could maybe combine the two and your vids are helping me see some potential in mixing these two methods within my head. I'm gonna have a go at making my own permanent gelli plate, can't quite afford a decent size brand name one currently, have you made your own at all? What weight of paper are you using to create the collograph? So the cut out parts are all stuck onto the lined paper and then the whole thing transferred onto the cartridge paper. Then the hair and glasses are cut away. Just trying to sort out all these layers.
    How many prints were you able to make with this collograph?

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there FR. You can build the collagraph up on any paper thatr will lift paint cleanly - copy paper, cartridge, lined. The different thicknesses of paper make a difference to the relief and therefore the amount of the collagraph thatr contacts the gel plate. I transferred the collagraph on 140gsm cartridge paper. Hope that helps
